Being the owner of a Merkur 39C slant, a traditional 34C HD and the subject of this video, the 20C, I have grown very fond of my 20C. The 20C's lighter weight and longer handle seemingly gives me a perfect balance that allows me to get a feel of the way it's shaving my beard. I have found that if I can't feel what the razor is doing, I'm inviting a poor shave and/or a fair amount of skin pain from razor burn. This razor works well with a sharp blade such as the Feather or with a more forgiving one like the Astra Platinum, my personal favorite after trying many different brands. The reason for this is, again, because of my ability to feel what's going on. It's a perfect razor for beginners or for old pros that like a well balanced well made razor. I was surprised to see that there was an issue with keeping the handle clean, though. If the razor is rinsed thoroughly under hot water after shaving and before the shaving cream has had a chance to dry and harden, then there shouldn't be an issue. Personally, I prefer the handle's coarse grip because it doesn't slip out of my hand. Some people may find an issue with the fact that the 20C is a three piece razor where the 34C and 39C, for example, are two piece razors, but I don't see where this is a problem. It allows me to be able to clean my razor more easily which is an important factor in keeping bacteria in check. A factor that many men don't consider. The 20C has found its way into being my favorite razor and worth the price as it will last for many years with proper care.
I just purchased this razor last week and have never used a safety razor before. Well I'm a huge believer now in why everyone talks about how great of a shave you get with these razors!! I highly recommend this razor to anyone that has suffered from razor bumps from multi blade shavers. Great review thank you.
Mine will arrive tomorrow and after trying many different razors from the Concord to Weishi adjustable (which I am keeping), I do believe that the 20C will be my final destination for a while. I just can't get into the bulkiness and shorter handle of the 34C. I will be using the Voskhod/Derby premium/Feather blades in the 20C. Thanks for the review.
I had never used a DE safety razor before today. I got this from Amazon this afternoon and shaved in the shower a couple hours later. I didn't know what I was doing, but I got a VERY close shave with no nicks or cuts. I can now throw away my old cartridge razors. :-)
