Jamey Johnson was invited by the Hag to come up on stage and sing a song during the Merle Haggard, Kris Kristofferson concert at the Ohio State Fair on July 31, 2012.
Jamey is , with out a doubt, the greatest country singer we have today....end of story. He is what we used to here on the radio any time we tuned into our local country station, thats what makes him so special...he is real
I've always thought Long Black Veil is one of the most beautiful melodies, and poignant lyrics. Jamey certainly does it justice. Heard him sing it at one of his concerts. He really honors the old music. Kee it going Jamey!
I was at this concert & i got chills when Jamey got up on stage with this country music ICON! Jamey is a true traditionalists like Merle & George & i hope he continues to sing those old TRUE COUNTRY songs!!
Who wouldn't be nervous up there with Merle? Jamey, just like the rest of us..grew up listening & loving every word Merle put out on vinyl, cd or whatever..it's called Respect.
We had the great fortune of being there that night. Kris, Merle, and then Jamey. The greatest concert moment of my life and I have been to many. Thank you for a memory I will never forget.
Would loved to hear Merle Haggard song this song in his heyday. He sounded so much like Lefty Fizzle when he was trying to become a singer songwriter and what a bloody beauty he became. THE BEST
That's my uncle playing guitar but now I have to give Justice to Jamey Johnson because he is a legend on his way I will always love my Merrill but Jamie you did a great job thank you so much for singing with him I love both of you amen.
I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to see Merle at least once in my life. So sad I won't get to catch him this summer like I planned, so I used the money to see another legend again...Jamey Johnson
The reverence that the younger true country artists have for Haggard is so awesome to see. Toby Keith stepping in to help Haggard on his second to last performance in Feb of this year is another example. Go check that out,,,,it's on you tube, three songs,,,Haggard is on an oxygen tank and he asked Toby to help him out. I hope these men pass on what Haggard gave them! So true about country not being dead, but just hard to find,,,but it's there if you make the effort!
Truly a song before its time. I was fortunate enough to get to know the songwriter, Danny Dill the last years of his life. He was a country boy from rural Tennessee but wrote a fairly complex song for the era.
I absolutely love Jamey. He is by far my favorite musician and songwriter. No one covers this song quite like him. Stay keeping it real JJ. You're amazing.
JJ does an absolutely wonderful job of covering just about any classic country tune. His own songs & talent far and away make Jamie the answer to The Possums question of "Who's gonna fill their shoes?
Freaking Jamey Johnson is so real, so honest country that he just make me and I'm sure everyone that listens to him appreciate what true heartfelt music is!! Good and bad!!Love you Jamey can't wait to see you in Erie,Pa.!!!
Jamey looks as if he feels out of place up there with Merle. But, he is exactly where he deserves to be. He is showing himself to be a humble and respectful man. Not to mention an enormous talent. Mr. Johnson is carrying on the kind of music Mr. Haggard, Jones, Jennings, Cash and many others devoted their lives to... And, doing it incredibly well!!
That surely would have made him more comfortable. You won't get anything from me other than great respect for Jamey Johnson! He has proven himself to be the best of the best.
I was at this concert, Jamey came in the back door partway through and I don't think he expected to be called onto the stage. It seemed like he was there just to be part of the audience.
Imagine how much fun it was for Jamey to sing with these greats. Having the Hag watch you sing, watching your timing, watching your skills, must have been scary and great all at the same time.
You´re absolutely right "SCUBA Diver". And what a great honour to be invited by MERLE HAGGARD on stage.Hey Jamie, you´re accepted by the RIGHT people! Great per formance!!
Just decided to look this up, cause I was there that night. This was a co-headlining gig with Kris/Merle at the Ohio State Fair, and Jamey was there in the front row as a fan. Was a phenomenal show.
Man, this is awesome. How great it must have been to get up there with Merle and Kris. Jamey is a true country star, performing with true country legends. One day, he'll be legend too. Keep It up, Jamey!
omg, i totally agree that his body language shows how humbled he is by merle. i thought it was so awesome that when it was time for the band to come in that merle threw his hand back and stopped them just to let jamey sing. . . .
you can see the respect Jamie Johnson has for Merle and Chris Christopherson. when either one starts to sing he almost completely tones down not to over voice them
Outstanding! Merle Haggard was the first real concert I ever saw, just over 30 years ago and still defines country music in my mind, along with Cash, Jennings, jones, Nelson, Williams Sr and Jr, and maybe Buck Owens. Johnson does a decent job here, and from what I see respects the guys who have come before
The only song by Jamie Johnson that you hear on the radio occasionally is You should have seen it in Color. I have his album and live it. You never hear Lucas Nelson (Willie's son) on the radio either. He's so good.
Jamey is snd has been the man for years glad he’s still holdin it down today got to see Merle just before he passed😞 but he was awesome and still had that great sense of humor🙏🏻
Great job Jamey! I like Jamey's laid back style and heartfelt traditional sound. Can you imagine standing next to Merle Haggard on the stage and singing Lefty Frizzell's Long Black Veil? I say Lefty because I can only associate him with this song and he was an obvious influence on Merle.
Absolutely the best phrasing for the sentiments meant to be expressed in this song that I've ever heard and I grew up loving Lefty wailing this thing on the cheap little radio in my increasingly dim past. I really like this guy - thanks for the posting. rt.
Jamey looked at merle all the time but Merle didn't, came through at the end with a smile. Chris ever the gentleman shook hand and smiled. thanks much for post.
I so enjoyed watching this video! Brought a really big smile to my face! Thank you! George Jones asked the question who's gonna fill their shoes.......Jamey Johnson has answered that question!
I've always loved this song and have heard Jamey sing it live. He certainly does it justice. But then, I don't think I've ever heard Jamey sing anything I didn't like.
Two fifths of whiskey and an eightball down we made it to this show. All my pics were blurry and we bought all the wrong size shirts, but it was fucking amazing! Tuscaloosa was proud to have these legends on stage together!
It's awesome how Jamey is so effortlessly country. While all these other no talent ass clowns over do it. He just exudes it naturally, as for Merle , he's just a legend. Which in my book, Jamey will be too.
max dobbs ....Merle Haggard "Hag"...Legend...One of the most iconic voices in the history of country music...Working Man's Poet...a musical, lyrical genius...
