How many of us would turn down the volume on the TV and turn up the radio to listen to Merrill over the years? That voice captures our joy when our Birds our flying high. And our pain when they fall. Congratulations!
My uncle would always listen to Merrill than the TV. Now my hubby and I do. He is and always will be an icon to all of us Eagles fans. We were/are blessed as a city to have 2 great Phillies announcers Richie Ashburn and Harry Kallas and 1 Eagles announcer Merrill Reese
"Eagles fans everywhere, this is for you! Let the celebration begin!" I go back and listen to those words occasionally and still get goose bumps. Thank you Reese for all of the memories! Fly Eagles Fly...forever!!!
No lie. Lost my cable during a game in 2016. Listened to rest of game on radio. I have never watched an Eagles game on TV since. I enjoy Merrell Resse and Mike Quick every game day.
As a kid, I remember watching Eagles games on TV with my dad. He would turn the TV volume off and turn his radio on. As Dad explained, Merrill provided so much information, you could visualize every detail WITHOUT looking at the screen. His genuine enthusiasm made you feel like you were at the game with a friend. Wonderful memories!
I haven't watched an Eagles game since 1979 on TV without turning the volume down and listening on the radio for Merrill's play by play. He's simply the BEST at what he does! Congrats Merrill!
I think the only way that he's gonna stop is by way of casket, as morbid as that sounds. That man absolutely loves what he does. I'm a Commanders fan but the Redskins highlight tapes of the 80's often had Merrill's voice when it came to games against the Eagles, so I grew up with his voice as well as Herzog, Jurgensen and Huff. I'll often tune into Eagles games on SiriusXM just to hear his play-by-play, the man is a *LEGEND*.
Merrill will always be a legend. I always loved hearing him on the radio. His voice is something special. Any EAGLES fan would love to do what he does. I love our EAGLES and so does him.
Coaches and Players come and go but announcers are timeless. There isn’t a better announcer. He is just a man that loves football and the eagles. And you can hear it in his calls.
Don't forget Gene Hart. We've been blessed with some iconic broadcasters in Philly. PA announcer Dave Zinkoff of the 76ers was another one. I can't imagine the day when Merrill is no longer calling Eagles games....just won't be the same without his unique voice and delivery.
Calling him the GOAT seems insufficient - not only is he the greatest football announcer ever, but in a city with a history of all-time great play-by-play announcers (Gene Hart and of course Harry, just to name two), Merrill is at the top of the list. Congratulations, Merrill!
Whether it was the truck radio with my dad when I was very young or the dewalt yellow radio when games were being blacked out on TV here in MD, always found a way to stay in tune on Sundays. Still literally listen to nothing but WIP when I drive by myself lol
