Sriram Raghavan paints a fairytale across the city of Mumbai when it was still Bombay. Made in his signature style, Merry Christmas is dark, playful and complex. The film is being seen very differently by some other viewers and critics, but I found it to be a masterful, layered and charming story about beautiful facades and hidden motives. In this video, we decode the film and give you some of our hot-takes on where film criticism is going wrong.

I really enjoyed the movie. There was some sort of old-world charm that just captivated the movie for me. The characters and the odd setting and the romantic ending all worked for me immensley

AMAZZZZZZING interpretations and analysis. Imma going to show this to my mom who apparently didn't like it because she expected a whoddunit and is ignorant towards how and whydunnits and of the fact that Merry Christmas is more than just a thriller garnered with murders. It's about two characters who subvert your expectations by delving into the world of crime where Raghavan-esque things happen, amidst which a humane story comes out which are realised well when one reads in between the scenes. Plus there is the absolutely magnificent technical aspects of the film..the lighting, colors, editing, befitting retro music plus heartwhelming original songs. Plus the symbolism of various artefacts and incidents shown in the film. It's just a great screenplay. I watched it today the second time and am appreciating the nitty gritties of the film more.

that part where you talked about projecting one's boredom onto others was spot on and the editing too.

Honestly, it was a better movie than Andhadhun for me. Less gimmicks and more natural storytelling.

If this was an English drama nobody would’ve had any problem with it. Many people are questioning the fact that the story contains two look a like rooms which they think a bit too much to digest. Now take an example of Murder on the orient express. Even that story is too much digest isn’t it? But we had no problems with it. We watched it as a crime thriller adopted from a crime thriller book. Merry Christmas was a crime thriller adopted from a crime thriller book. As Indian viewers we tend to lean on relating more than adopting especially coming from great directors like Sir Raghavan. Also the pace has nothing to do with a good film. There’s good films there’s average films and there’s bad films. But pace can definitely make a bad film worse. I enjoyed thoroughly as Mr. Raghavan is my favourite director in Bollywood maybe I was bit biased and I also think there was a lot of ways to improve. But that is just my opinion, I am a viewer not the creator.

People rant about bollywood creating same action and the same People don't appreciate good films and celebrate the same bollywood films they rant about.

I think it's a good film, not a great one tho. My biggest gripe with the film was performances from two leads and the innate structure of the film, the first line from the novel it's based from has more essence to it than what I got from the conversations and convictions from the two leads in the first half. The direction from Raghavan is as usual solid, film looks beautiful. The aesthetic of South Bombay at Christmas time in the 80s, it was all done so well. The second half had meat to the story, pacing was great, editing was crisp. The ending was well thought-out and made sense, the idea behind the film and what it means is all over the film through various nuances and tidbits. Overall a good Raghavan film! Maybe a second watch might elevate the experience but if I had to describe the film in one line it'd probably be, "It's a surreal film where going to prison for murder and theft for a woman that you just met last night even seems plausible".

Saw the film twice in theater. Raghavan is a genius. In the first screening I saw it was half filled while in the second viewing it was only me and two other people. I appreciated a lot more during second viewing. During my first screening when the film ended people next to said, "Kya hua? Kuch samaj mein nahi aya? started laughing. This shows that most audience today need to be spoon-feed with everything and don't want to use their brain. Maybe this film will do better on streaming. The ending was amazing!

Actually majority audience going to watch violence, massy and nonsense senseless movie . Movie majority fake publicity and influence p chalti h nowadays after pandemic mostly. Otherwise good movies actually get good box office no . Like 12 fail deserve to be at least 100 cr . That's why such unique movie remain underrated despite having good sense😢 bitter truth. Kuch bhi kaho public bheed p jati h content p nhi😢.

No, the movie wasn’t boring as made out to be. It had the Raghavan stamp all over, the only grouse is about the messy ending with the premise of two look-alike rooms - a bit hard to digest.

The movie is amazing, absolutely loved it. ❤ Katrina & Vijay were Brilliant and the direction by Sriram was superb. The audience is brainless hence this beautiful film failed at box office. Shame that audience only wants to watch massy nonsensicall movies like Animal, Salaar, Pathaan, Gadar2 etc and not Good movies like Merry Christmas, Swades, Tumbbad etc !!
