The GREAT Merry-Go-Round perform 'You're A Very Lovely Woman' on national TV in 1967 The Los Angeles group was comprised of Emitt Rhodes, Gary Kato, Bill Rinehart and Joel Larson.
🌈 Jah Bless 🌈 We were all only 16 in those days, or it seemed like it. (Actually, I was 14) One of my favorites, got to see them live once: they played an actual live show on.a stage set up in the parking lot of Builders Emporium, which was sort of the Home Depot of that era. They were great! It was so cool to see them!
Still a great song fifty years later. I heard the group play it live right after it was released. I bought the Merry Go Round LP, and I'm still waiting for the follow up album.
That's what we heard on the East coast. I won the album as a "Bonus LP" on a 'Spin-It-and-Win-It' contest on the local AM rock station. I don't have any recollection of what 45 I won but I never stopped playing the LP - RIP Emitt
Emitt, My brother Tom Martin and I appreciate your kindness to us and Craig Leitch. I was just going back to the days at the Hullabaloo and your solo career at the Troubador in Hollywood.
A near forgotten gem from "that time" in the 60's....those days were blissful, sweet, expansive...so full of expectation -- But how does this song not get played more regularly, on classic pop/rock stations today?
A tragically underrated pop/rock singer/songwriter. Emitt only had a few minor hits that charted the lower regions of the Hot 100, this song being one of them. In many ways, this is the best Paul McCartney song Paul never wrote.
I once tried to tell my little sister about this song; this video. Couldn't recall the name of band or song, but I told her how awed I was by the lead signer/guitarist. How he 'finger picked' the strings, then tapped them to get a sound that I simply could NOT describe. Now, I find this video and I'm all "YES! THIS IS IT!" Thanks for posting. Brings back some good memories....of great music...and a better time.
That first Merry-Go-Round album has so many incredible songs and great vocals. It's a good band. I play the songs from it, the third Moby Grape, and Love's Forever Changes. Each is a tremendous example of the best from the late 60s.
Paul and Emitt both wrote all their music, played all the iinstruments and recorded their debuts at home. Both released in '70 within several months of each other.
He was just 17 - what great talent; maybe too much talent for the ruthless music business. Real artists often get screwed by the hit-obsessed record companies.
If any act was far too good for the top 40, it was Emitt Rhodes and the Merry-Go-Round. They were an alternative rock band before the name was coined. They took what they learned from the British Invasion (as did damn near everybody back then) and fashioned a unique sound that wouldn't be heard in force for another decade. This gem and the tongue-in-cheek "Listen, Listen" are my favorites. And Emitt is still making relevant music today...check out his "Rainbow Ends" album released this year (his first Billboard charted album in 45 years). You won't be disappointed.
I had their song "Live" on a cassette for many years and loved it...but did not know who it was as it was unidentified on the radio show it was taken from (KRTH 101 Los Angeles)...when the internet came along I found it on a lyric finder website...been crazy about it always...
Captain Easychord, it's ironic that you should call this song "the best Paul McCartney song Paul never wrote" because Emitt Rhodes, like Paul McCartney, also released an incredible solo album around the same time that truly was a solo album. The album, titled "EMITT RHODES" was performed entirely by Emitt Rhodes, who played all the instruments and sang all the vocals, like Paul McCartney did on his first solo album.
@cantstopsinging, I agree it would be more like Lennon on this song. Sort of like Norwegian Wood. To me, though, it has the feel of Walk Away Renee by The Left Banke. It is impressive that it was written by a 16-year-old. RIP, Emmitt.
Emit Rhodes was a great writer. we the hell is Emit today? Somewhere in my record collection I have heis first solo album. I think I wore it out. I kind of idolized him as a songwriter. I always wanted to write as good as him but never came close. Emit, tell us what you are doing!
Actually, this is a very "old fashion," song, if you listen quite closely....but WHO of US has ever been in THIS SITUATION, young, or older ??? Being "young," it's all flowers and fantasy, with a little angst thrown in, one way or the other. If you're ( how shall I say this ???) "mature," it's more than likely to cause you serious PAIN, whichever SIDE of the boat you're ON ....
I guess there was just too much competition from the Beatles, etc. for Emit to get on top nationally with this song even though for the time, it was as good as any.
I’ve heard others talking about their appearance on the dating game. Is there anything of it on the internet? I’ve been searching for a little while to no luck
The juxtaposition with Sir Paul appears often with Emmitt however with the gift of 50 years time Sir Paul joins the pantheon of great songwriters; Mr. Rhodes an afterthought.
