Here is the good Mid to Late 60's band The Merry-Go-Round, preforming at the Hollywood Palace. They are best known for producing the great solo singler Emitt Rhodes. Don Knotts introduced the band. They do a quick Medley of some of their songs than do "Listen Listen"

I remember catching this on the tube after taking my girlfriend to see Herman's Hermits at Steel Pier in Atlantic City. This Merry Go Round performance was the highlight of that day. I even recorded a version of "Listen,Listen" with my band in 1990. Still have my programme from the Hermits concert dated Aug.17,1968, so I'm guessing I saw a rerun of the Palace that night.Still have my promo 45 of "Listen,Listen" on white A&M label.

The band formed in the Summer of 1966. Emitt Rhodes had left his former band, the Palace Guard, and began jam sessions with Gary Kato and friends. Within weeks, they were joined by Bill Rinehart, formerly of The Leaves and Joel Larson, formerly of The Grass Roots .

Listen, this was a minor hit here in vancouver canada, finding its way just inside the top 40 back in '68. I only heard it a few times and never again as a flashback. It definetly didn't get the recognition it deserved! It's an easy to follow song, the lyrics simply stating you to listen...as the band begins to play because there is nothing you can say or do. It;s in a catagory of it's own (bubblegum) and I missed hearing it but had never forgotten it. Thankyou for sharing this classic.

Thanks for posting this! Never did I ever expect to see The Merry-Go-Round live. I actually bought their first album I believe in late 1967. Then when I heard She's Such a Beauty on the radio around Christmas of 1970 I got that and became a fan of Emitt's through Farewell To Paradise. It took a while before I realized he was the singer from The merry-Go-Round. I always felt not enough people knew of him. It's so gratifying to see over 90,000 views here.

I dig the sound. The Merry-Go-Round had alot of air play on the local AM radio stations in L.A. They were one of the many groups who tried to take advantage of the "British Invasion" by trying to sound British. Emitt Rhodes actually went to Hawthorne High School in Hawthorne, CA. The same high school as the Beach Boys.

On this day in 1967 {May 13th} Merry-Go-Round performed "Live" on the Dick Clark ABC-TV network Saturday-afternoon program 'American Bandstand'... At the time the song was at position #63 on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart, that would also be it's peak position on the chart, and it spent 4 weeks on the Top 100... And on the same 'Bandstand' show they also performed "You're A Very Lovely Woman", it would be their only other Top 100 record; it entered the chart on September 3rd, 1967 for a three week stay, peaking at #94... Original member Emitt Rhodes, as a solo artist, had a Top 100 record, "Fresh As A Daisy", in 1971, it reached #54 on the Top 100...

Better to say they are best known for backing the great songwriter, singer, multi-instrumentalist, producer and engineer, who went on to record some very classic solo albums which he wrote, recorded and produced entirely on his own, before even Paul McCartney did it.

I just heard this , and I thought this was a new band trying to do some kind of "flashback" thing, because I bought a tape of the Bangles in the late 80's, early 90's, and the Bangles seem to do this same song as at the beginning, called "Live", I though the Bangles wrote it, but who knows. The Bangles have good songs.

The Merry-Go_Round was another good band that were victims of bad management and internal frictions within the group mainly connected with not making the kind of money that greedy record companies promised. Emitt Rhodes is and was a genius on the level of the greats of his time.
