It's hard to compare as they're both different types of climbing (big wall vs big mountain). The logistics are also different. Meru's Shark's Fin is technically much more difficult but K2 is also very technical... especially the Magic Line (a route which almost nobody takes). There's also the Polish Line which has only been summited by Jerzy Kukucka and Tadeusz Piotrowski who was killed on the descent. It's suicidal. I would say that K2 is definitely more physically demanding. Meru is a 6000 ft climb from basecamp whereas K2 is 11,000 and the last 2000 feet are in the deathzone.
Heleen Van When I watched this documentary I suddenly saw the resemblance with my life at this moment. It was an epiphany! Looking up a high mountain and not knowing where to start... Now I realise that you need the right gear, right people, make a plan and stop and go back if it is impossible to go further and try again etc. THANKS A LOT for doing this and making this film!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A fantastic documentary and its trailer only has 94 comments (95 if you include mine) and just over a thousand likes. I find that quite sad considering just how good it was. This work definitely deserves more attention.
Saw segment called "Edge of a Dream" on CBS Morning earlier today and it looks like an amazing documentary that the climbers had to film THEMSELVES! and they did a fantastic first rate job of it. There was so much else to worry about than exposed freezing fingers trying to work cameras and then getting ready for their turn to climb while another films it.
Everyone who wants to get on top of the world to boost their self esteem knows what they are risking. If they die they basically commit suicide. No need to feel bad or sad about that. I can feel bad about some random human with cancer, not for a man who played russian rullet and killed himself. It was his choice, his irresponsibility
“Any coward can sit at home and criticize a pilot for flying into a mountain in a fog. But I would rather by far die on a mountainside than in bed.” ― Charles Lindbergh
I once said as I head off into one of my major mountain adventures that if I have to die getting to the mountain top then so be it. I have no regrets. More than once I have stared death in the face and I maintained that attitude until what I thought was the end. Tragedy is a burden of the living in which no dead man has asked to be laid bare.
Good observation Ivan! In this clip you're seeing the descent faze of the climb. When you get too low for rock anchors you rely on snow anchors for your safty. But the less delicate gear can be dropped as a means of making the descent easier as the snow anchors are not as strong. Cheers mate:)
+Lion Paw Actually, among mountaineers, Meru is considered the more difficult mountain. K-2 is very impressive, but only 3 people have climbed Meru. Happy Climbing my friend!
