Meruem and Komugi Love Story in Hunter X Hunter Still makes me cry every time I watch it! One of the best villain story. This is, personally, one of the best moments in HxH.

just realized in the final moments she finally felt his face to see what he looked like and realized he was not human but that didn't even faze her or her feelings or her very close death with him, dam beautiful writing and animation.

Some people may have not noticed this: the animators draw komugi more and more beautiful every time she's on screen. To show how meruem sees her. An ugly snot-nosed child to his forever girl.

I always thought the eagle attacking Komugi was so random.... until now. At 6:30 Meruem unknowingly sends the eagle to attack Komugi when he manifests his tainted nen with murderous intent. The eagle takes his command and goes do his bidding. But when he sees the manifestation of his evil, the eagle attacking Komugi, he destroys it without a second thought. His instinct is now wired to protect her. Respect for Togashi-sensei.
Togashi has successfully shocked fans around the world with this brilliant duo. Picking a being of astronomical power combined with sharp-witted thinking equivalent to the speed of light. Meruem-osama was bloodthirsty and ruthless to no end, his words are absolute and one dimensional. Yet Togashi had used Komugi’s hands to fold this one-dimension sheet of paper into a beautiful light, giving him multiple dimensions of meaning, forgiving, self-control and love. Komugi was the least qualified character that fans expected to make a profound affect and Togashi took advantage of this. There are many animes that touched people’s hearts worldwide, but very few can bring them to tears.
This description is gorgeous. Thank you for writing it! I especially like the imagery of her shaping him like origami - transforming a flat, boring piece of paper into "light" aka "Meruem" - the name his queen-mother gave to him. The combination of these characters was not something I expected, but man are Togashi's choices brilliant! My eyes are still blurry with tears from the video.

@@hannahlea911 the fact that they used still images at length with no animation and a growing distance from view because meruem had lost his vision by then and his name no longer applied to him because he would never see the light again. They let you experience it the same way they both did. They kept calling to each other. He clearly wanted to make sure she was still there with him. He didn't want to lose her. He felt like if she let go that he might never find her again. She finally felt his face to learn who he was. They both knew that they were dying together soon. But they died the happiest they ever could have.
You skipped out a great part of their love story. The king played a powerful move against her and named it his own. She told him that she also came up with that move before and named it. That it was her baby. Then someone used her baby against her, so she had to kill her baby. At their last game, she played her baby, and the king mimic her move to kill it... but she came up with a completely new move to save her baby. Their baby.
I think what makes this couple so powerful is for the fact their main objectives were not to fall in love with eachother They both had their own purposes and personalities that were very opposite from eachother and they didn’t falter from being their individual character. In the end they died together through their situation and for a love unsaid yet true for what it was and how it was formed
This is what's lacking in how "love" is portrayed in modern media. Show don't tell. There's a lot more yelling about how someone loves the other, with very minimal action beyond edgy, and unhealthy "sacrifice" scenes that isn't very compelling in the long run.
Im a 49 year old mom watching this with my autistic son, I do it to be close to him, we discuss it, all of it, we even write down the power systems and I must say, I've never been more committed to a anime than this one. Very well written story, right to the end!!
All I can say is thank you, I've learned and understand that if I want to be close to my autistic son, I MUST enter his world, not vice versa, this is the key, we discuss this and a list of others, one piece, record of Ragnarok, Castlevania, jujutsu kiasen, goblin Slayer, demon slayer, another really good one I can't remember the name with a young man named thorfin? "I have no enemies", I really have seen that it's not cartoons, it's not silly, it's for everyone, and I'm hooked, berserk is another I enjoyed watching very much, it brings topics to the table I'd never dream of introducing but we discuss all of it,,,, I'm blessed, I've found the way in,,,oh and Kiliwa is my utmost favorite ❤️ take care my anime family 😘
If reincarnation exists and according to Kaito's situation, it exists, I wish that Komugi and Meruem reincarnate and can live together forever. Such beautiful story.
Isn’t that only possible because of chimera ant unique biology to pass on traits/power/remnants of whatever they ate to the next generation?. It’s not a spiritual thing so, unless someone ate them and gave birth to a new batch before the poison would’ve kill the eater, wouldn’t that be impossible?

What a bittersweet ending! I keep rewatching this and Reina's return home. Hunterxhunter had a lot of unexpected emotional plot lines. This anime is truly amazing. I loved the way Mereum and Komugi were able to express how much they loved each without actually saying once "I love you". This is one of the few pairings I have ever seen and actually really felt emotional about.
I think it’s just more proof of how meruem changed and grew throughout this whole thing. It was always “do not make me repeat myself” as this sort of reminder of his power, his superiority- all to which he laid down without hesitation to be able to see her again (when he was speaking with palm and asking her to let him see komugi); and he, as you said, “repeated” himself multiple times during their final moments. GAAAAAAH i love them so much😭
Rewatching the scene where Komugi ask for the king's name makes me think that the ultimte reason he fought Netero was not just for his name. Meruem wanted to give Komugi the only answer he couldn't respond to.
Still to this day, I'm still salty that Meruem and Komugi didn't make it at the end of this arc. Meruem had the chance to become one of the greatest Kings not only to Chimera but to others as well. Also Komugi had a lot of exposition to expand. Damn.
Meruem was too murderous. His plan was to kill 99 % of humans, letting the "worthy" ones live. And it was he, in his youthful arrogance, who would decide who lives and dies. And how many had he killed already? I get that the love story is touching, and everyone loves a redemption arc, but him becoming King? Enormous risk.
Such a beautiful story. It makes me want to show these scenes to non anime watchers to make them realize anime can be just as great as film/tv. .... but in order for their relationship to really resonate, one needs to see the whole chimera ant arc to realize how seemingly crazy it was for a blind girl to walk in & win over a brutal, crazy powerful monster.
After watching this ( w/ tears in my eyes after that last minute) & being reminded of the scenes.. I think watching the whole chimera ant arc wouldn't be necessary actually. This vid shows the general idea of his op strength & initial brutal mindset.. & I also love that the uploader kept the scene of Youpi seeing Pouf freak out & just being like ".....wdf, again?"
dude king/meruem and komugi deserve to be together like the way he kills the hawk whil attacking her the way that he didn't kill her the way he didn't punish her the way he listen to her the way he plays for her the way he talks to her the way he held her while ashe was hurt the way how he protected her the way he wants to see her the way he cares for her the way he remembered her the way he wants her to call his name and the way how he wants to held her hand for the freaking last time he change for her and I think 1 person can change a person's life and meruem and komugi is an example THIS IS WHAT I CALL LOVE PERIODT
Hunter Hunter is not my favorite anime, but when I saw the chimera ant arc there was only one thing I was waiting to see Komugi and Meruem, to be honest when I saw Meruem I thought If he is just a normal villain character, but when Komugi came everything changed I became concerned about Meruem's development and every episode I only waited for one thing Namely the scene from Komugi and Meruem, when they both died, I couldn't stop crying to be honest, my scene of death for both of them is the only scene in the anime that makes I cried a lot I really hoped that they both could live happily unfortunately that never happened. Even during the last few episodes for this arc I felt that it was humans who were the villains along with the royal guards even though not all of them.
Not all heroes are pure light. In the chimera arc, we see darkness within heroes, like Gon and Netero. Especially the latter. He was sent to fight, even sacrifice himself for mankind if it came to that. Though he is enjoying his battle with Meruem, the encounter is full of dark imagery. He showed Meruem just how terrifying humans can be. Not to mention how Gon is seemingly driven by his hatred entirely for half of the arc. The anime really, REALLY drives that point home with how he's drawn with these thick, frantic lines that makes him look really primal in a few occasions (during the countdown, when Netero signals him where is Pitou, and at the time of his transformation, off the top of my head.) Likewise, you see the ants showing their human-like emotions and ambitions, and these causing their structure to crumble. Meruem's being the most notable development, with the budding feelings towards Komugi, building up to that wonderfully bittersweet end. But the Royal Knights weren't completely irredeemable. Sure, they are still the villains to the story, but they were just doing what they believed was the best for their king, each serving him in their own ways. Another thing to note is that time Youpi spared Knuckle, and he felt very conflicted about it. Everything gets mixed together into a beautiful chaos.
Neither is mine, but this love story hitted me right in the heart. So beautiful and pure, so unexpected in an anime full of very DISTURBING adults near young boys... Meruem and Komugi goes easily in my top three romances of all time.
I’m sitting at work in tears after watching this sequence. Masterful writing that highlights the growth each character finds infatuation and respect from one another’s “perfect imperfections”. I just wish I could continue to watch their relationship unfold but no, this is the end, it’s unfair.
I remember wanting to stop watching Hunter x Hunter when I got a few episodes into the Chimera Ant arc. But a friend who had already seen it told me to give it a chance because it gets better. I am happy that I stuck with it and the rest of the series. I have to say, Meruem and Komugi provided me with such a moving and lovely experience, and Meruem`s character arc was amazing. He became more human, and finally showed his humanity, while at the same time Gon was losing his. Fantastic writing and a bittersweet love story.
I do love the Meruem/Komugi arc, but the episodes were quite a slog to get through, as these moments were around 1/40, the other 39/40 being one single portion of a fight taking an entire episode. They stretched it beyond reason.
I believe that Komugi's ability here worked the same as Kurapika's during the York New City arc. Kurapika's ability is amplified greatly as long as it is against the Troupe, but Komugi's ability is greatly amplified because losing means her death.
Togashi did not have the right to do this, but he did anyway, and it was one of the most, if not the most, beautiful arc I've ever seen in anime history. Togashi is just built differently, quite literally since his back is the only thing that keeps HxH from being even bigger than already is.
The genius of Togashi's work is that the story might follow the classic "weaker gets stronger to fight the most powerful opponent", but adds a twist at the very end where that formula no longer exists. The king might have died from poison, but the person who flipped his world upside down from a ruthless ruler to someone with compassion and love was non other than a blind girl who knew nothing but to play gungi
seeing meruem bested for the first time in this game, and also him understanding there are other forms of strenght besides physical will alwyays be one of my fav moments in anime.
I believe when he stated how he was the king and how powerful he was after asking about his name he came to the realization of how absolutely complex life is and that killing someone is like destroying a world
I just finished their final moment together last night and first thing i did today was come to the internet for solace. I know they were both where they belonged, but their death left my heart with such a heavy sadness. I cried my eyes out.
One of the most frustrating I have ever been, but when Meruem finally remembered Komugi, I felt so much relief that I even forgot my frustrations over this arc (many internal monologues/narrations mid fight, I'm impatient asf) and Pouf being the biggest asshole in my eyes. The end and build up was so beautiful, watching this without expecting anything, but it woke and shook my heart. I love these characters so much, it's so complex but really wonderful.
Yeah, the Meruem/Komugi arc was beautiful and was largely what kept me going, but damn was it a slog to get to the episodes that actually had any impact on that arc at all. If they cut 90 % of the episodes in that arc, there would probably still be 5 % too much remaining. Puh 😮💨
@alaron5698 same thoughts! It made it feel so slow paced even though it's not. It's a good thing that the ending of the arc was so much worth it. Especially yes, the Meruem x Komugi story, I didn't expect it here and I didn't expect I'd love it, really woke the hopeless romantic in me lmao
I cry every time I watch it. Even though I know it's like that, I still want to watch it. I have watched many anime series, but for me, perhaps the love story between Meruem and Komugi is the most beautiful love story I have ever seen. Not a single love word was said but I still felt their love for each other. Even the more times I watched it, the more details I noticed. Meruem changed, he said he wouldn't repeat it but in the end he always repeated that Komugi are you there. At the last moment Meruem was probably blind, Komugi touched him as a way to see him. The blood stains on Komugi's body told me that she must have been in a lot of pain, but she still replied to Meruem that I was always here. Thank you author for creating such a beautiful love story.
If Meruem didn't find komugi, I think he would survive with the post death nen.. as long as he really wants to play again with komugi.. They died so peacefully with all the love they could give at the end.. Meruem saving a couple minute to hold her hand.. he was shy.. and afraid of her reaction because he is not human.. but Komugi touched his face tenderly and hold his hand strongly.. To say don't worry, you protected me, you saved me and no one was so nice with me..a poor deaf girl.. This is true love.. such a masterpiece !
I think Meruem's convo with Palm should also be in this compilation. That is where Palm thought he loves her that much to go to such lengths. A king bowing down before her just so she would tell him where Komugi is😢
Yup. In the end he didn’t care about being the strongest or ruling the world. I like how he says he blinded from really mattered after he was poisoned, meaning if he could rewind time he wouldn’t of fought Netero. He’d give anything to see her one last time, even bow his head as king.
Togashi really smart person. I think that the ant's side is the best. This is a legend episode from the end of the battle to the end. Personally, I think Togashi is the best character ever made. I liked it because it wasn't just a munchkin villain, but a three-dimensional character capable of mental growth. It was too fraudulent, so it was a shame to leave early. In the end, the last moment was more humane than anyone. Just beautifull
It makes me sad when people think anime is just always these silly fighting scenes and don't think they can have any depth. Nothing has made me cry like this scene did. It's beautiful
I used to hate her watching HxH as a kid but now that I watched it i truly understand how important she is to mereum character development ...just beautiful ✨
This always makes me sad, but i enjoy it too much. Its so bad because Netero shows just how bad humanity is. A bomb that destroys life at a cellular level over time and is contagious. Even Meruem wasn't that cruel.
This is a recap for me and I'm sad once again because the show is still on hiatus because of Togashi's illness. There's so much greatness in many minds but lots of them can't show it because of health problems and other underlying issues. I hope the best for his recovery so the anime can continue.
didnt catch it the first time but the eagle that attack komugi was the same eagle that was set off by Merueum unknowingly. in a way the careless acts of the powerful can hurt the weak
i really didn't expect much when komugi was introduced and thought it was some poor attempt for me to care about meruem, but their whole story proved me wrong 💧👄💧 i think the same idea goes for the entire anime but let me take this opportunity to sob about this lol
One of the greatest character arcs in Hunter x Hunter and amongst Shounen manga. Chimera ant arc was truly a great highlight of the entire series and most definitely the inspiration for the Jeju ant arc in Solo Leveling (I suspect).
