Meryl Streep and the Oscars | Part 8: The 2010s & Beyond 

I really enjoyed August Osage County - I love a good scenery chewing performance from an actor like Streep.

Doubt was the film that sold me on Meryl. We watched it for a film studies course in college back in 2009 and my god, that performance is just fantastic. Kate deserved best actress for revolutionary road over the reader

August Osage County is SO much my family story-it’s funny, painful, quirky, revelatory, heartbreaking.

I wanted her to win her third award for Prada. To me that's her most iconic performance outside Sophie and it would've been such a celebration of her comedic talents which are underappreciated. Outside of Prada my next favorite late performance is August Osage. I know she chewed the scenery but I love it and have watched that movie many times. Only watched Iron Lady once.

Bravo, Brian on this amazing Meryl + Oscars series! A monumental undertaking that you executed with obvious admiration and expertise. Thank you for all this work! I've been a Meryl "superfan" since I saw French Lieutenant's Woman when it came out in 1981, then of course Sophie's Choice sealed the deal. My parents owned a home video store in the 1980s and 90s so I was able to see many of her films several times at my leisure -- and now I have a box of about 25 DVDs. It's just an astonishing body of work well recognized with so many awards! I'm throwing a 75th birthday bash for Meryl next weekend, about 20 friends coming over for some Streep trivia, a game of MERYL Bingo, and two signature cocktail options: "The Iron Lady" and "The Glacial Pace."

I'm glad you acknowledge how difficult it is, for a gifted singer like her, to brilliantly embody Florence as she did. I don't know if it is because for me Florence's life story is so inspiring, I loved her in that movie.

I think she’s going to win an Emmy for Only Murders and it is well deserved. BUT I do miss seeing her front row at the Oscars.

In case you wanted to fulfill your Witch nomination trivia, Ruth Gordon won in Rosemary’s Baby for playing a witch. Not a typical one but the group was referred to as “witches”

These Meryl Streep videos have been really good. For me, I have always thought Rooney Mara should have won the Academy Award for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Mara went all out and truly transformed herself. Meryl was fine in The Iron Lady, but it seemed like the Academy wanted her to have a third Oscar and decided they waited long enough to give it to her. Why has Meryl Streep not done any more movies? Her last movie release was in Don't Look Up all the way back in 2021. Pops up in supporting roles in a couple of TV shows and basically nothing else.

August should have won her the third for me. Either that or Devil wears prada.

I don't think she overacted in August at all. She was playing a drug addict with both uppers and downers. This makes her choices very accurate

8:10 I’m confused where Brian is getting the “Roberts had a string of bad performances” prior to Osage. Duplicity, Valentine’s Day, Eat Pray Love, Larry Crowne. Say what you will re the movies themselves but Roberts is not bad in any of these. Some of them weren’t even flops. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Maybe the lack of Oscar nominations is intentional. Perhaps a strategy to make us and the voters miss her and then come back to film and make a movie where she is a strong contender to win an Oscar not just a nomination

It must have been pretty depressing to sit there year after year after year for 29 years and not win again until she finally won again for The Iron Lady. Marvelling at the skyrocketing prices of milk. 😂

14:11 Unpopular opinion: I hated the movie Boyhood. To me it was ALL GIMMICK (filmed over 12 years). To me Birdman is far superior film with a gimmick. (“one” shot)

I would've nominated Vicky Krieps in Phantom Thread over Meryl in The Post for 2018. Still incredible though.

Rebecca Hall should been nominated for her performance in Christine instead of meryl streep in Florence Foster Jenkins Taraji was also good in hidden figures.

Sorry boyhood was an overrated mess of a movie. All flash no real substance. Arquette did the best she could with a VERY thin script tied to a gimmick. And im a Linklater fan btw.

Roberts is much better than Streep in August Osage County. Roberts is really the lead or co-lead. Streep is a caricature and the worst part of the film. Many of contemporaries would have been better in that role including Glenn Close or Jessica Lange.
