MESCALERO, N.M. (KRQE) - While most areas in New Mexico are slowly opening back up. The Mescalero Apache Tribe has declared a State of Emergency and is ordering is shut down for two weeks to try and stop the spread.
"In order to protect our people we have to do this" said Mescalero Apache Tribal President Gabe Aguilar.
They City of Mescalero and The Mescalero Apache Tribe decided to take action and ordered a 24/7 lock down for the next two weeks. While they only have four positive tests, they are to get results back for 600 more tests. The Mescalero Tribe President Gabe Aguilar said the reason for the lock down is because they may be facing a potential outbreak.
"Our tribe has been hit by this virus. We are now in it were in the fight. We have elders fighting for their lives, we have young ones that are fighting for their lives" said The Tribal President
The order will lift Sunday June 7th at midnight, until then all residents are to remain inside unless they need to go to a grocery store. They have seen what has happened on other Native American lands like the Navajo Nation and want to take every precaution. The President says social distancing has not worked, and something more drastic needs to be done.
"This is for the protection of our people, our people are the most important thing in our lives, our elders are the most important thing in our lives, lets do our part" said The Tribal President.
The Tribe has blocked entrances to Mescalero land off Highway 70, but Highway 70 itself is not blocked.

While things are closed here we are trying to live life still as if COVID19 was never here. Good to spend time with the family instead of seeing them through glass.......

How did an Apache get the last name Aguilar ?

Kristy Rodriguez Read a little history. Spain was in conflict with Native Americans long before the US took the Southwest in its War with Mexico. Many have Spanish surnames because Spaniards gave them their names or Natives adopted those names.

Looking down is a cultural thing with Native Americans. I used to work with Native American youth helping them find jobs and resources and that was one of the hardest obstacles to overcome with them. When we were doing mock interviews I could not get them to not look down or make eye contact. I'm not sure what it is maybe in their culture its a sign of disrespect but I did notice that over time. It's nothing to be suspicious of though

@@thisguyiscool4826 or maybe his eyes are bloodshot and he's looking down because he's fatigued and drained due to the fact that not only has the virus infected his people, it's also infected his daughter. Please assume nothing about my brother. He's doing his best.
