Awesome - I've been studying mesh systems for 2 days straight and had come to the conclusion that I want the orbi - my son upstairs doenst have wifi on his box so he needs a wire. and this will be a huge improvement on this ethernet-over-power-lines thing he's been using. This is one of the best comparisons I've seen on YT, so kudos for putting it together! I can't speak to the Eero Pro ro 6, but can comment (I think?) on the Orbi. I have an older Orbi RBK50 2-node mesh system (connected wirelessly), and am not entirely satisfied with it. A couple years ago Netgear would roll out firmware updates that would "freeze" my mesh system, and getting it restarted was rarely painless (normally takes several attempts to get a successful restart). This is still the case, but recent firmware updates haven't "crashed" my system like they did before. Granted, Orbi has a lot of customization features that the Eero does not, but most people would never miss them. Where Orbi falls down is on their support side. Their tech support is only free for the first 30 or 90 days (can't recall which), after which you have to pay for their support. They do have a decent online community support group, but if you're struggling to get your WiFi back up and running, you probably don't want to have to wait for someone in the support community to respond to your question. I don't know how Eero support compares. In my mind, the most critical need for any mesh router system is stability. How often do you have to restart it? How often does it "pause" for several seconds? How seamless is it when moving from one node to another node? I could sacrifice a bit of speed and range for a system that's rock solid in terms of stability. I am wanting to upgrade my mesh system, and am currently ranking the Eero Pro 6 as my top choice. (I need a couple of ethernet ports on each node, so I can't go with the Eero 6). I watch the price on the Eero Pro 6 quite often, and have yet to see it budge from $599 (3 node system). If Eero (or Amazon, since Amazon owns Eero) had a nice sale on the Pro 6, I'd snap it up in a hurry. But, so far anyway, they've only run sales on the non-Pro systems. I don't know how such a test could be structured and/or conducted, but a stability test would be invaluable to those of us choosing a WiFi 6 mesh system.
@landpet

Thanks! I still have the Orbi and the eero Pro 6, still pretty good, no drops from what I'm aware of. I did run the eero pro 6 a little longer than the Orbi though.
@Mhosborn
@Mhosborn 2 года назад
@@landpet Appreciate the quick reply. You might want to consider adding some additional comparison points for future projects like this: 1. Warranty length 2. Support - How is it supported? Can we call the mfr, or are we limited to email support? Is support free? How long does it take their support team to answer the phone, reply to a support question email, etc. 3. How easy is the system setup? Were their instructions clear and correct? How low long did it take to configure the system and get it up and running? I agree that speed, range, and price are also important. The suggestions above might serve to differentiate you from other RU-vid reviewers, though. Just my $0.02 worth. Keep up the great work!

I went with the Orbi, I do have a smart home with about 65 devices (including about 10 Cameras). It seems to be the only system that can handle that amount of traffic. I used WIF I 6 Nighthawk and WIFI 5 Google Nest system. They gave me the same download speeds, but shorter range, and streaming would lag at times. Those issues have been resolved with the Orbi system.

Thanks for the great video, any possibility you could compare the speeds with Deco M9 Plus Please.
@landpet
@landpet 3 года назад
No problem. I lean more on reviewing newer stuff. The Deco M9 Plus is phasing out. What are you trying to achieve? What kind of setup will you be doing, Wired or Wireless backhaul? The Deco M9 seems like a good deal especially considering it's a tri band. But I recently tested the Deco X90 and was sort of disappointed in the wireless backhaul speeds. Granted it was recently released and it can potentially get better.
@alan1912
@alan1912 3 года назад
Great comparison! Does adding another satellite unit wirelessly to either the Eero Pro or Orbi slow down the data speeds? I recall on the original Orbi that adding the third unit then means the third unit needs to use bandwidth from the WiFi for the back haul, which then reduced data speeds like the other models in your video. There was no slowdown with just two units connected wirelessly as it used a dedicated band for the back haul.
@landpet
@landpet 3 года назад
Thanks! I've only tested two units so can't say for sure but I would imagine it wouldn't slow down the entire network, it would just be slow when you're connected to that node because there are more wireless hops to get to the main one. Meaning if you went by the main router and did a speed test, I believe you would still get full speeds (assuming other devices weren't being used at the same time).

Nicely done. It was good that you pointed out how much better wired internet backhaul is even though wireless is usually much easier to set up. Wiring takes more planning. A wired TP-Link Deco X60 acts as a router by default, but it can be user configured as an access point. In router mode, one Deco is the main one and any others have to be connected to it and not connected directly to a hub. In AP mode each Deco can be independently wired to a hub. Understanding the difference is important when planning how to pull ethernet wires in a house.
@landpet
@landpet 3 года назад
Thanks! If you're referring to an actual hub, I would avoid it, I would use an unmanaged switch instead. A network hub slows down unlike a switch.

Great review, can you answer this question on any of these? I am looking for fault tolerance. Can I connect two units to a switch and connect my modem to the switch or do the units have a master that talks to the modem and if it fails the satellites also loose internet?
@landpet
@landpet 3 года назад
Router must go to modem first, if it fails, then the rest disconnect as well. Then again from another perspective, nothing is really fault tolerant (besides the inner checks the software performs), what if your modem fails? what if the switch fails? unlikely but it can happen.

One thing i’ve never seen ANYONE talk about, including the service providers and equipment manufacturers is where to put your TV receivers. It literally took me years to realize my receivers were causing havoc on my mesh network- put them DIRECTLY into the modem, not on your mesh router or switch. They use IGMP Broadcast and these routers can’t handle it. Would be great to see a video on this.

A)buy 1 eero 6 pro then use my eero 6 router + the extenders B) just buy 2 eero 6 pros The speeds I get is 250up/250down when I’m close the main router, 150up/150down when I’m close to any of the extenders I can do wired back haul since the house has cat6 to most the house. I was hoping you could do a review on the MeshForce 7. You’re the only one that seems to conduct wired back haul speed tests when comparing these mesh systems I have the Meshforce 7 tti band system and the WiFi speeds literally fall by half when operating via a wired connection. As soon as I disconnect the Ethernet cable the speeds more than double. I tried contacting Meshforce and they acted like they had no idea what I was talking about. They kept asking questions as if they’d never heard of someone trying to use these with a wired back haul. Any insight would be greatly appreciated because the lower speeds when connected to an Ethernet cable makes zero sense. I pay for 809 mbps and the wired connection easily produces that when plugged into a PC but my WiFi speeds will slow to under 100 when wired. The speeds from the same mesh point are nearly 250 when connected wirelessly. Thanks for your time.
@landpet
@landpet 2 года назад
Two things to check: Make sure the Ethernet cables you are using are at least cat5e (not cat5) or above like cat6, cat7. Verify they can support gigabit speeds, cat5 doesn’t support gigabit while cat5e does. If you are using a switch, verify the switch can support gigabit speeds. Those would be the two things that come up in my mind. I don’t know if I will review the meshforce or not, I have a lot of other ones that I’m working on. But I do appreciate the suggestion. Customer service people don’t always know what you’re talking about, has happened to me many times as well with products in general. Sometimes support is leased out through third parties that just read off scripts. Hope this helps

I dont get something... You say that is better when we use the mesh routers wired to the main one. But what about the coverage? That is going to reduce the coverage since you expand it when you use the routers wirelessly. Am i wrong? I live in a flat that needs coverage and I dont know if use the routers together in one point is going to benefit my experience.
@landpet
@landpet 3 года назад
I’m not sure I understand. Mesh WiFi routers connect to each other and expand your WiFi coverage zone. If the routers are wired together that ensures all the routers have strong signals. I should mention, there is only one active router, the other routers are acting as access points.

@@landpet ok but i mean. Imagine that i use one router in the living room, another in the kitchen and another in the rooms. That way I ensure full zone coverage. Great review! I have a Nest router with 3 original google wifi units as points and was never impressed by speed when I used with my old ISP and still not with my new Starlink system; old ISP and Starlink routers were and are still much faster than running through my Nest setup. Range with with router and three points was never great either, even with wired backhaul. Not sure if it is the first gen google wifi units that are the issue and should replace with nest routers (to retain wired backhaul capability) or go in a different direction altogether. I read the Nest points are not much different than the original google wifi's. The range of the Deco X60 is impressive and since I can backhaul wire all but one unit maybe tri-band is not necessary.

Nest WiFi was a definitive improvement over Google WiFi from everything I've read. The Deco X60 is better for sure in terms of performance than the Nest WiFi. If you're wiring almost all of them I don't think you need tri-band. How is starlink? Did you have to wait long to get it? What are your speeds?
@bwallace5692
@bwallace5692 3 года назад
@@landpet Starlink has been great! Avg 100Mbps down, 10-20up, sometimes much higher. I signed up last fall, got this month. An issue SL users are having incorporating just their own router is the fact they lose dish stats and controls they have via the SL router. One option is to operate both but double NATing can be an issue. The other option apparently is to incorporate a Static Route in third party router to the dish IP. Problem is, most mesh system don't seem to offer Static Routes, but stand alone routers do. If you know of a mesh system that offers this I'm sure most SL users who want a mesh network would be interested.
@landpet
@landpet 3 года назад
Thanks for that info. I don’t discuss this much, I probably will soon enough but you can run some of the mesh networks in access point mode so you can just use it with your SL router. I heard Elon was going to get better speeds down the line up to 300 or so down, I’m sure you know about it more than I do since you have it. For instance, I do believe the Deco X60 supports this, for sure the Orbi has it as well maybe look into that.
@landpet
@landpet 3 года назад
The Deco X60 should support access point mode so you can leave your router as the main router. The Orbi definitely supports it. Not all the mesh WiFi’s have this option, you can’t take a look or just start with the X60 and change its operating mode to access point.

I don't know if you reply but I got a Deco X-60 question. I currently have a Deco X60 (3pack) and a 150mbps internet connection. 1F Speed beside router: 150-160mbps D/U 1F 15 meters away (kitchen area): 60-80mbps D/U 2F All around 30-40mbps D/U Will adding another Deco (Cheaper on maybe the M5 or the M4) at the 2nd Floor give me higher speed and better connection? (Disclaimer: Ethernet connection isn't an option) Thanks in advance for the help.
@landpet
@landpet 3 года назад
The deco X60 is the best dual band mesh wifi I've tested. I don't understand what 1F and 2F mean. In general adding another router acting as an access point will help your speeds but placement is important. I know this isn't always possible but if you place the main router (connected to the modem) in a central area where when you add the others, they all are close to this main one. When you don't do this and add access points and they have to connect to each other wirelessly before connecting to the main one, that results in greater speed drops. In short, you want to reduce the number of wireless "hops" an access point (X60 acting as an access point) has to do. Yes I think adding another one will help but probably not by a lot. The better (however much more expensive) solution would be to get a tri-band router like the eero Pro 6 or netgear Orbi. Tri-bands excel at wireless backhaul. Or maybe even get the deco M9+ (granted I haven't tested that one)

It was a while ago but I believe I gave them permission to access my nest wifi which they were able to remotely to access logs to figure out if there was an issue or not which there wasn't. That's all I know about privacy for the nest wifi. Generally speaking I believe ISP's can track you either way u less you use a VPN service like expressvpn for example since that encrypts all your data.

This is more of a difficult test because placement matters. If you are closer to the extender but still have a good signal to the router, it may take a while to switch or it may not switch. In my case, switching takes less than one minute, most of the time less than 30 seconds.

Agreed, this was a test of internet speeds. I have a whole lot of other videos and in some I mention that. It’s not always easy to pack so much information into a short video. It’s funny though because some of my longer router videos some people comment can you consolidate this? Too much info there. In my newer router videos I started doing local speed tests to isolate the router rather than depend on internet speeds. Some of the other ones like the Asus XT8, I even do a file copy test from my phone to my NAS and talk about those speeds as well.

Depends what router you’re comparing it to and what mesh and how fast your internet is and how many walls and how big your place is. It’s hard to say yes or no for a specific scenario unless I know all the info above but generally speaking mesh WiFi’s provide more WiFi coverage so yes generally speaking. I do walk throughout my place and see how long it takes to switch, most mesh systems switch in under a minute which is fine in my opinion. I only mention it if it has a hard time switching between nodes or doesn't switch at all which most mesh systems don't have that issue. The other reason I don't mention it is that I'm trying to make my videos shorter. There are other things that I don't mention either like how parental controls work for instance. In a nutshell, it's difficult to choose what to mention and what not to mention and I'm constantly adapting but my goal is to make shorter videos packed with as much information as possible.

I spent hours on tech support with them and they said that any of their mesh systems are not designed to work with a switch connected.
