A great suggestion! I currently only have four, and I think that wouldn't make a very interesting video. I'm planning on breaking one of those into two different basses and I could make a video of that process if that interests you :) I could also do a very general "Studio Tour" and go over my process for recording at the same time!
So many thoughts... 1. That poor bass needs some cuddling and a cigarette after that. Jesus christ... lmao 2. I love that you're putting this much effort into a song that it over a decade old. It's still one of Meshuggah's best songs, and my favorite by far. 3. I subbed when you asked me to. :)
Thank you so much! Combustion is still unbeaten in the feeling it evokes in me, it just keeps on getting more intense throughout :) As a side note, I don't actually hit the strings super hard, just big movements.
This video is a testament to the fact that you absolutely do not need to down-tune the bass in order to sound heavy. You did an amazing job with this cover! There is no other band in the world quite like Meshuggah. Plenty of other heavy bands out there, but none that produce this kind of 'stone caveman' feel mixed with a rhythmic complexity that feels like the ground dancing beneath your feet.
What the actual fuck 🤣🤣🤣 This was absolutely incredible, so good. Also what is the tuning you use for this/what does their bass player usually use as far as tuning goes?
One of my favourite MESHUGGAH bass lines. Entertaining and fluid, especially when watched being played. Just like you did. Great job with the mix, Combustion needs a proper one for it's density. Thanks man. Pozdro666
Just out of curiosity, why this bass in particular for this song? First thing that popped in my mind was the extra long scale length to a tuning wich is a half step up already? Might be the pups that are a bit more aggressive in that axe or...? Just saw a few of your videos and subbed btw. Awesome covers and informative also. Love the work! All the best!
I wanted to have the P Bass tone for this song, but my blue P Bass has a neck that's been through a lot. Rehearsing this song on that was pretty unpleasant with the rough, beaten fretboard edges and the amount of sliding this song requires. The D-Roc has a P Bass tone in the third pickup position and the fretwork is impeccable! There's also an element of "F the system" in there, because everyone expects you to tune a Dingwall super low and have that super scooped and grindy tone. Plus of course I wanted to show off my new bass :P
Unfortunately, that tab still isn't 100% correct. As far as tab numbers/notes are concerned it may very well be, but definitely not rhythmically. You fell into the same trap as so many others, thinking that the intro riff starts on the downbeat, when it actually starts on a 16th syncopation (what you have written in your tab as an 8th note is actually a 16th note pick-up from before the bar, tied to a 16th note at the start of the next bar). The answer lies in the hi-hat count-in, and also later when the drums shift to half-time and play the snare right on the beats. If you need more explanation to understand this, check out Yogev Gabay's video "HOW TO COUNT 'Combustion' by Meshuggah" which explains the whole thing in great detail.
I am well aware of the syncopation behind this song and Yogev's videos 😄 However, my goal with these tabs and videos is making Meshuggah more accessible and learning the song on bass & guitar as I have written it is much much easier than the way the song really flows, that's why I've decided to write the bass tab out like that. Had I chosen to do a full band transcription I would've written everything a 16th note more forward but that's not the case :)
Thank you! Most of the time I list all the effects used into the video description. I don't think there's anything else I use besides those except for picks, and with those I tend to gravitate towards the Dunlop .88 Ultex Standard.
@@Paajanenae forgive my ignorance but, the sound is pretty solid and sustained for a 4 strings, when i used to play that low on my 4 strings the E string was too flabby
@@phildahomie1343 That might be because I tuned my bass a half step UP for this :) Just like Meshuggah does. Guitars tune low, bass tunes up. But for some Drop-E action check out my cover of the song UHRI by ATLAS!
There is a way of hearing this groove, which is very strange at the first look, but it makes sense after an in-depth analysis. So, the way most people hear the song is the intro guitar riff being on-beat, and the hi-hat count-in being shifted by a 16-th note. But the other version is the whole intro and riffs neing syncopated, the intro starting from an upbeat if count 4 and the hi-hat being on-beat. This is confusing, but it makes more sense. I guess writing the whole tab in this way would be very confusing, but on the other hand, being confusing is what Meshuggah is one if the goals of Meshuggah
Yeah, that's true and I think it's the correct way! I decided to write my tab the way most people hear it because it's easier to read and understand that way, and also because while I can hear the groove the right way sometimes, I just can't do that while playing 😅
DAAAAMN!!!Ive just came across your channel...because of the Meshuggah covers..and beeing a fan of Mesuhggah....all i can say is..DAAAMN! You NAIL those songs ( and other songs on your channel)...so well..that it is a friggin joy to watch and listen to :) And the sound of your bass and tones..are just amazing. FunFact:Im a drummer myself (fourth generation in my family)..and ive used to play (Drums)in metal bands here in Norway , Lowdown, Blood Red Throne, ZeroZonic, Trendkill(PAntera tribute), Angerman,But i also play bass on the side,so i do love some great bass playing. And you are pretty much amazing at it.! Subbed to your channel . I hope you are doing good. Greetings from the NorwegianCarDrummerViking, Stefan :)
You're right, that was a conscious decision on my part! It's pretty hard trying to perceive the rhythm as starting from the upbeat, especially when you're using a pick and trying to do downpicks on upbeats and vice versa. Ultimately my goal is to make these songs more accessible to the community :)
When I pick the higher string I mute the lower string with the palm of my hand! Once you adjust your technique for that it becomes quite easy :) The tempo isn't that high either!
Wow! Killer playthrough! Many thanks for the tab walk-through. Very detailed and really fills in the nuances of how to properly play (...well, attempt to play in my case) one of Meshuggah's masterpieces.
