Which one. Both solos are equally beautiful in their own right. The first solo does more for me than the second. In terms of technicality, the second is more impressive but for base emotion, the first solo has always spoke more to me.

I find it hard to believe this is even genuine. How the hell can anyone work in the music business, unless you're a kid, claim to have never heard this song in any capacity? It's like working in the music industry and claiming you've yet to hear "Bad" by MJ. It's just one of those songs. If anyone has any musical depth to them, they just know these songs. Even most people with little or no interest know these songs if you're past a certain age. I mean, i can't stand classical music, yet still know music from Mozart if i heard it. Nor can i stand Nirvana, yet would still recognise "smells like teen spirit".

I remember an episode of The Daily Show where Jon Stewart stated, "Pink Floyd is the greatest rock band of all time!" . . . . . . . . . "is an opinion". I could not help but feel that it was also his personal opinion. As for this video, it's nice that she is hearing this song for the first time and I find it to be somewhat fascinating - as in, I wonder how big the rock was that she was living under - this video does not in any way require her commentary. I can't wait until she discovers "Echoes", or "Shine On You Crazy Diamond". I'm not going to actually listen to her making a bunch of comments about it.

I saw this at Soldier Field in Chicago some years back. The enormous “Comfortably Numb mirror ball” emerged from a truck or trailer at the 50 yard line. Shocked, we watched it rise as pole section after pole section extended to a height of the upper deck end zone seats. The mirror sparkles travelled around the downtown Chicago high rise buildings. The entire downtown skyline had become part of the show. I will never forget that moment. It was stunning.

I was at this performance at Earls Court (London) in 1994. Comfortably Numb was the penultimate song of the concert and was in floods of tears at the beauty and the agony. It was almost too beautiful. I wanted it to go on forever. At the same time, I knew this would be the last time I’d ever see them live, that this would be their last tour - I just felt it deep inside. It was a perfect moment that could never last and that would never be forgotten. It was like my soul was being filled and my heart ripped out at the same time. I stood there, unblinking, transfixed, desperately wishing it would never end, knowing it would. People all around me were crying as well. I hope someone else understands this. Best night of my life…

There's a reason that solo is considered by many to be the greatest guitar solo of all time. It's not technically difficult. It's not fast, flashy, or distorted. It's slow, simple and searing - like pain itself. It captures and the essence of dissociation from unbearable agony through chemical means. It expresses the detachment and melancholy of mind numbing intoxication. To know Gilmore's solo and Waters lyrics is to know that drugs bring only detachment. Detachment and alienation. Another powerful song about overwhelming pain and disassociation is Radiohead's "How to Disappear Completely": I'm not here... This isn't happening... In a little while... I'll be gone... FWIW, This is solo was inspired by Gilmore: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8wFnVlIdj7c.htmlsi=d2L67VdvnMBPC8d8&t=249

I was at this concert in Philly. The mirrored ball sent the light rotating around the stadium for minutes, and when the song suddenly ended, you felt like the stadium was still moving round n round. If memory serves me, this was the finale of the concert. Pink Floyd isn't known for vocal prowess, although they are quite serviceable. Great Gig in the Sky would be a more vocally challenging song for you to review.

This song is from The Wall, its a part of the movie when the lead Pinky finds out his wife has left him for another man, its the final brick in the wall. The Wall which is the thing we build to protect ourselves from that which hurts us, or shapes us. Teachers, parents, women we love. This is when they find Pinky who overdosed in his hotel room, the effects in the song are what its supposed to sound like to him cause hes wasted. The pin prick is the adrelain shot to bring him out, etc. When you understand why hes comfortably numb it makes the song even more genius. And the effects of the music awesome.

Yes, it's pretty hard to understand this song without the understanding that it was written as part of a concept album for a movie. Pink Floyd have been playing this track since 1979 (!!!), often at huge live concerts, and it shows. And if you want something a little different - check out the cover by the Scissor Sisters. At first I hated it -- but now I love them both.

Its not only the music. it's the whole package of music, lights, lyrics, and props combined that makes Pink Floyd's live shows so easy to get lost in. This concert perfectly defines who they are as artists. Many musicians, more so in modern times are to a large proportion narcissistic, they demand the focus is on them and only them, even the music often takes a back seat to other musicians own ego's. Yet here you see the giant glitterball opening in the centre of the arena, nowhere near the stage, even causing some fans towards the front to turn around and have their backs to the actual musicians. Every Pink Floyd show I watch serves to reinforce my belief that their aim is always focused on improving the experience of their audience with an overwhelming spectical instead of the usual self gratification you see at many shows of a similar scale. Perfection!!

This song comes from The Wall album, which tells a complete story. It is a beautiful song, but when heard in the context of the album it is even more powerful. The ultimate experience of hearing this song is during The Wall movie, which gives not only the musical experience, but the visual one as well. Watching it definitely helps understand exactly what is going on during the song, and takes it to a whole new level. If you have never seen it, do yourself a favor. I played the studio version of this song once for my girlfriend at that time, playing along with the cd on my guitar. I nailed the final solo, playing along note for note. She cried at the end.

Pink Floyd are the undisputed God's of Live performance. This entire concert is studio quality. I adore Pink Floyd, but some - myself included - would say that an ideal live performance is not just a reproduction of what is on the record, but is instead wildly different from the record, full of improvisation. I mean, if you want to just hear the record, who needs the band? Just put the record on, start the lights flashing , and let the band stay home with the wife and kids. I mean, absolutely no offence to Pink Floyd or their music when I say this; David Gilmour is one of my top three guitar heroes. However, it’s not because he sounds exactly like he does on the record - quite the opposite. I love the improvisation in his solos. Now that he’s a solo artist, he does much more improvisation, and, in my opinion, is much more enjoyable to hear and watch. Greatest live band ever: Blue Öyster Cult. No guitar solo is ever the same. No keyboard solo is ever the same. The drum patterns are different at every show- particularly in their golden years, between 1973 and 1981. Rock ‘n’ roll is not meant to be as Symphony Orchestra, in which each musician consistently adheres to the sheet music every night; it’s meant to be an emotionally charged, of-the-moment phenomena.

I grew up during the heyday of progressive rock bands - Yes, Led Zeppelin, Emerson Lake and Palmer etc. Every piece of music took you on a personal journey. Their wasn’t a need for music videos as the music created pictures in your head. Pink Floyd were in many ways unparalleled in their music inventiveness. I remember the day this song was released and I’ve heard it thousands of times since - I always stop whatever I’m doing and listen to the entire song. It still captivates me, and yes - me and every other guitar player knows the solos by heart. Glad you liked it. How about a little Led Zeppelin next - maybe Kashmir?

You also mentioned the soothing mood set by the song. This is related to the subject revealed by the lyrics; a first person narrative of a performer encountering a "Dr. Feelgood" ("that'll get you through the show"), and the addictive better living through chemistry trip that follows ("there is no pain; you are receding"). The combination of musical and lighting genius capture this perfectly for anyone who has been treated with modern general anesthetics. Of course the subtext reaches well beyond into escapism of all flavors and the related detachment from humanity.
