Follow MprooV on Twitter / mproovapp #agadmator Eugenio Torre (born November 4, 1951) is a chess grandmaster (GM). He is considered the strongest chess player the Philippines produced during the 1980s and 1990s, and has been Board 1 player for the Philippines in eighteen World Chess Olympiads. In 1974, then 22 years old, he became Asia's first Grandmaster by winning the silver medal in the Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France. In a tournament in Manila in the 1976, Torre beat then-reigning World Champion Anatoly Karpov in a game that has become part of Filipino chess history. In 1982 he gained a spot in the World Chess Championship candidates matches, where he lost to Zoltan Ribli. He served as Bobby Fischer's second in the 1992 match against Boris Spassky in Yugoslavia. Torre is still an active player and put in a strong performance at the 42nd Chess Olympiad in Baku in 2016.
Torre shot to prominence in 1976 as a possible future title challenger after winning a strong four-man tournament in Manila ahead of World Champion Anatoly Karpov - thus becoming the first player to finish ahead of Karpov in a tournament since the latter became world champion. "In the summer of 1976, three grandmasters traveled to Manila, Philippines to participate in the Marlboro-Loyola Kings Challenge chess tournament. They were (in order by Elo): World Champion Anatoly Karpov (2695) from the Soviet Union, Ljubomir Ljubojević (2620) from Yugoslavia, and Walter Browne (2585) from the United States. They were joined by grandmaster Eugenio Torre (2505) from the Philippines for a double-round robin event.

DIY... Eugene Torre was the first coach of Vishy Anand when he was around 4- 5 years old and was living in Manila at that point in time...His father who was working for the Indian Railways was on a deputation to Philippines...Vishy returned to India when he was 6-7 years old as a pretty solid player and started playing at the Mikhail Tal Chess academy in Chennai...

Karpov is the most underrated champion ever. In his prime he beat everybody consistently at classic chess and blitz for more than 10 years. His style is not particularly flashy, so that explains why he always loses on youtube. Always!

You have no idea how corrupt and incompetent our national sports program is, do you? lol. Wesley So gave us a chance to reply to his request to move to the USA. They didn't reply. They never even acknowledged that they received the request. There are similar stories from different athletes from different ports in the country.
@davegreentea6420
@davegreentea6420 6 лет назад
It is just a game. Corruption is everywhere, even in America, and if and when you go to hell itself, I am sure you will find corruption there too. Sorry, I do not read much about your sports program. A great boxer comes from your country without much support from your so called national sports program. Just play chess... regardless of what your passport is... and enjoy the game. It is either you are black or white, that is all there is to it.

Speaking of being a Filipino: There's something new going to with "w"esley "s"o Someone said Wesley is the most inconsistent player in terms of tournament results. I think it's consistent that Wesley So's been performing so-so in the 3 events between the 2022 Olympiad and the 2022 chessc*m global championship, namely St Louis' 9LX, the US Chess Championship and the World Fischer Random Chess Championship. The reason is that Wesley started a secret relationship with Carissa Yip at the Olympiad. My basis: A. These events at the Olympiad: 1 - Look at Carissa's Twitter header. It's a photo of just Wesley and Carissa (and Leinier and 1 other). 2 - You can see Levon was being Wesley's wingman when they were teasing Carissa about castling (which is pretty ironic given what happened later to Wesley in the WFRCC, but well I guess it goes to show how little preparation Wesley did for the 2019 WFRCC... Anyway...). You can see Levon even makes a 'mistake' in saying that when you castle, the king goes 2 squares, which allows Wesley to say 'unless it's chess960' to flex being the inaugural WFRCC. (Levon also probably has a soft spot for Wesley because Arianne Caoili was Filipina. RIP.) 3 - There's a Tagalog interview where Wesley was asked about romantic relationships, namely if Wesley has a 'special someone'. (Btw, Tagalog interviews of Wesley are pretty rare, so for me I think they're pretty important.) It was probably this interview that gave Wesley a wake up call to finally start a relationship with Carissa. B. And later in the USCC Wesley talks about how teenagers always play for a win because they don't have family, bills or GIRLFRIENDS. Wesley laughs at the girlfriends part. (NOTE: I already compiled the above in a video. The ID is vylMndunCa8 .) So what I guess is: At the Olympiad, they got together, but, because of their 1 decade age gap, they decided to keep their relationship a secret. 5 years from now, when Carissa will have graduated from Stanford, their ages 19&29 will become 24&34, the minimum age when the half your age plus 7 rule is satisfied. (See post ID wf0pkg for the formula.) But still, since it was both of their 1st times dating, they were very distracted eg talking on the phone all night. Notice that Wesley hasn't made any Facebook posts between the start of the Olympiad and the end of the CGC. I guess this is because the time Wesley would've used for Facebook went to talking to Carissa. Anyway, we don't see much of an impact, if any, on Carissa because Carissa stopped playing chess for awhile for studies at Stanford. But, well, we did see much impact on Wesley in getting only - 5th place out of 10 in 9LX, - 6th of 14 in USCC and - 6th of 8 in the WFRCC The WFRCC underperformance was the last straw. It was like the Beth and Cleo thing in The Queen's Gambit. Wesley and Carissa decided to slow down their relationship. And then voilà Wesley wins $200,000 in the CGC and can now fully celebrate with Carissa. Finally, Wesley said in an interview with Dina Belenkaya during the FIDE Grand Prix ('I am not afraid of Hikaru') that Wesley's mom, Lotis Key, didn't want Wesley to use Twitter. Who else but Carissa (your new girlfriend/romantic partner) could've convinced Wesley (yourself) to defy Lotis (your mom/parent) ? Update: Someone pointed out to me that at 33:33 of the 2021 us chess championship closing ceremony Carissa admits to being star struck by Wesley So. Take a look at Wesley's reaction to that. Lol. TL;DR See vylMndunCa8

8:35 -- If, instead of d4, Karpov had played Qe2 (harassing the bishop and inviting Qh1 for a queen-trade), it leads to: ...Qh1+, Qd1, Qxd1+, Kxd1, Bd2 (thwarting Nc3 or Nd3 while keeping White's king hopelessly trapped in the corner,), Nf2, f5 (thwarting Nd4 or Nh4), g4 ...and a delightful end-game ensues in which Black is ahead, but both players have plenty of opportunity to blunder.

Great video as usual. I do wonder how grandmasters can miss a tactic like that with queen check on h8.

After Qa8 from h8, is it possible that Torre could have taken the knight immediately or is it not good?

Mikhail Tal and a 3300+ elo chess engine play 100 games; how many times do you think the engine will fall for Tal's tactics?(Tal doesn't have to win; he just has to trick the engine)

Sy Derr good question

Sy Derr I think it’s widely acknowledged by now that engines can no longer be beaten with tactics. That has been true for many years already. In fact, I believe a human grandmaster can only beat a strong engine if he manages to create a closed position and occasionally by exploiting its evaluation of material. Considering the Kramnik vs. Fritz match a few years back, overlooking a mate in one isn’t the way to go....

Sy Derr I like the idea, but engines can no longer be tricked by tactics calculating 17 moves ahead. Maybe in a very low time limit he can trick once or twice but surely no more,

17 moves ahead? 20 years ago, Deep Blue was able to examine and evaluate up to 200,000,000 chess positions per second
