Messi could never do what George did on those shit mud bath grounds in those days! As well as the bastards defenders, kicking you to death!

best was a great player but equally put him in the modern game and he would seriously struggle, imagine a prem player going clubbing every night of the week now, they wouldn't last long. players are much more disciplined now

Nobody would know it. Messi played on mud and bad fields when he was a kid playing for Newell's Old Boys. Despite this, the little kid scored more than 250 goals.

depends what your judging, raw talent id say it's best tbh but his personal problems really stopped him achieving true greatness remember he basically quit top level football at 27, Messi and Ronaldo have played double what best played at the highest level. best was also unfortunate that his national team would never have the strength to achieve anythinh

I am a liverpool fan best imo Was superb. Messi never played in the prem We’re tacksling would of done him a few times .. Ronaldo relied on speed ( you can see now ) he is a lot slower and not as good .. George best had it all ..imo he was better than both of them ..

It often been said Mohammid Ali floated like a butterfly and stung like a Bee, well George was footballs answer to Ali. Messi is a great player no doubt about it but could he of done it in the 70s when skillful players were kicked off the park and they played with heavy balls on mudbaths. George did it all.George would be the most expensive player in world now. George nutmegged Cryuff in Rotterdam wile playing or n/ireland, Cruff himself said ,you cant train for what Best has got.I never liked united in the 70 so iam not some blind fan, like Rouman the Liverpool fan says the Best. Alan Hudson was bang on when he said, Best should of left united after the European cup win in 68, United were in decline he should of gone to Chelsea, he would o loved teir style of football. little Footnote, George Sharples, Everton Blackburn, i worked at his house i asked him about Best, he said he was the best player he had ever played against, when George played against Everton for the 1st George Sharples said to hhis matem i hear the young kid from irelands good, he mate replied dont worry i will cripple him. At half time Sharples said to is mate i tought you were going to cripple him , his maqte said i cant get near him

I am not sure the old Leeds defender Paul reaney would agree with you there. Reaney had best in his pocket everytime he played against him.

Messi has never did anything on a park that i havent seen before. But george best did so much i had never seen before, so its george best any time for me! I can always remember when i first seen best play a few times at just age 8 or 9 years old, the first thing that struck me was that he made football look so much fun and great to play and thats before he scored goals we wont see again. As in around 1982 he was a guest on grandstands football focus, but i hadnt a clue who he was? Then bob wilson showed us a great wee treat with a goal from george best in 1971 against spurs and i couldnt believe what he did as i had never seen any player ever score the goal george did. The ball came over high into the spurs box and a player tried to clear it but all he did was head the ball strait up at least 6 foot into the air as players came into the box then pat jeninngs ran out to punch it clear away but was challengend at the same time and only got half a punch on it, so the ball just fell to best who was about 14 yards out and at a slight angle to his left side and then he let the ball bounce once onto his chest as by now at least 5 spurs players were around him but not close enough as phil beale and cyril knowles were on the goal line and big pat on the edge of the 6 yard box, to them and every one watching what could george really do now? Not that much as it looked to hard to score with so many men in the box he could hardly see the goals let alone score one...but then george didnt need to see the goal posts he could sense where they were and what to do about it as he chested the ball he then let it drop onto his right foot and lobbed it over every one and cleared the bar by about 6 inches as every one just stood and looked up high at the ball go over them but to then just drop down the back of the net and into the corner against the stantion. No player even tried to jump high to try and head it as the two on the goal line were cought flat footed, but hoping it was going over plus at 7 and half feet high its alot to jump to, never mind clear it, with there head to, or even there hands. Big pat said as he picked it out the net "no one will ever do that again ever" and its funny as 5 spurs players just looked down at the muddy pitch and not one even looked or said a word to each other. It was a case of well its george best so its no ones fault. And it wasnt, what can men do when they cant even reach the ball let alone clear it. When a see it again it still sends a shiver down my back. A mean this was on a mud bath park wet febuary and freezing cold. Exhibiting sublime execution gauged to the very inch. Then say he would get kicked so hard while on the run that he would wobble but still wouldnt go down by the most ruthless player ever to play the game then send the keeper two different ways to then just walk round him and score. Then when a hard fast ball was hit into the box he would run 15 yards and in the middle of 4 big hard men he would simply just control it on his chest and let it drop and stick in the mud to then just put it away, as boots were flying every where at him, that was the hard side to him. He was the best ever between 1966 to 1972. But it should have been to 1982. Its even scary to think we didnt see him at his peak. How could he get any better than he was. He would get football stopped. He would and did run total riot. He would be miles ahead of pele and maradona. For me its best, maradona then pele.

Fabulous Alan. Thanks so much for sharing. For those of us who remember those days they were magical times. I wish we had more great footage of George playing like there is of today’s matches. What kids today don’t realise is how much more challenging it was to play in the 60s and 70s. With today’s protection George would have been unplayable. All the best. John Gubba.

Typical misty eye nostalgia from coffin dodgers. Best Miles ahead of maradona. A players who single handily won Argentina the world Cup. The only best thing best has over maradona was that he was two footed. But when it comes to ball control, awareness, football iq, passing range, team player, power on the ball best was miles ahead. Perhaps best was a better finisher but maradonna played much more as a midfielder where best was more of a forward. Charlton was the playmaker for man United and best mainly scored the goals. Charlton was also a much consistent and reliable performer than best unlike best wasnt pocketed by anyone he came up against. Ask any Leeds fan who saw best they will say that after the game man u fans use to go looking for george. They couldn't find him because he was in paul reaneys pocket. Not to say that best wasn't a highly talented footballer but his body is abysmal when compared to maradona or messi and is only considered as some kind of superman in the UK. How can you trust a nation that didn't see the genius of scholes, hoddle, beardsley,Barnes, Hudson, bowles, currie, le tizzier and choose far inferior players over them like Gerrard, lampard, Reid, Wilkins etc.

Best, Greaves, Charlton, Law, jinky Johnstone, Maradona, Gerd Muller, Pele they would all have been amazing in this era. However Best lost his way after 1971 and the United team was aging. They should have built a team around him but didnt. Alot of defenders knew how to cope with him. Bobby Moore, Tommy Smith and Paul Reeney, Bertie Voghts had George in their back pocket and, as George said, they were the best, hardest and fairest he ever faced. I do think if youre great in an era you have been great in any era.

On pitches that are bowling greens, and what you don't know is that the ball was a lot lot heavier in George's day, Messi would not have scored one of his freekicks with the old balls, it was a mans game then, a bunch of fairies today.
