It's really not an argument they can make, either. It's not as if he went to play for Wolves, Getafe and for Bologna and personally was instrumental in lifting them up. Not really, there is a gap from Messi to Ronaldo but it's not as big as you say. For me, De Boer put it right. I think he's so far ahead of everyone that has ever played and that's not disrespectful to the others but Messi just plays at a different level to them. As a playmaker he's one of the best ever, as a winger he was world class, as a striker or false 9 he was one of the best ever, his passing, finishing, dribbling, free kicks and goalscoring ability are all world class and could be argued as the top 5 ever for all those attributes. Then we break down his career, from 18-23, he was one of the best ever, same again from 24-29 and again from 30-35. Any of those 5 year segments are probably better than most top players ever to play the game. People forget his pressing and how good that was earlier in his career, the fight he had for every ball. Wrap all that up and I think it's inarguable, I understand why people say Ronaldo and he has had an absolutely incredible career but he doesn't have all those attributes and he can't dictate games like Messi.

Then couple years later (2011) some fanboy in school told me to check out Messi. I was highly sceptical and didn't even like Messi without knowing who he was and how he plays. Messi has also only ever missed one penalty in a shootout out of 9 and 8 of those shootouts were with the national team in international tournaments (far more pressure). Ronaldo has had 13 shootouts in his career, but only was involved in 9 since he waited for the 5th penalty 4 times, only to not even see it happen. Ronaldo missed in 2 shootouts. There is also this "myth" that Ronaldo is far better with penalties in big moments (not overall, overall he is better no doubt) and that Messi is "terrible" in big moments because of some misses, while Ronaldo has had the same amount of penalty misses in "big moments" as Messi, which somehow is overlooked. I mean, just this World Cup after Messi missed his penalty vs Poland, everyone again started saying that he couldn't handle penalties, etc. Before the game against Poland he scored a penalty and after that game he kept on scoring every penalty as the knockout stages started and the pressure started to build, including penalty shootouts. Just 2 weeks after people were clowning him for missing a penalty and saying he couldn't do it under pressure, he completely destroyed their argument. I am and will always be a Ronaldo fan but there is no question that Messi is the better player The reason Ronaldo has a massive fan base is his mentality. When he is rock bottom...he finds a way to rise up and deliver and he has always shown that fighting spirit in his career.
It's not even a debate . Messi is a generational talent, a gift from God. There's a debate to be had if R7 is even the best Ronaldo . Only Maradona comes close but Messi done it way longer . 15-25 it's hard to believe anyone could surpass Maradona s skill but Messi almost did over twice the time scoring way more prolifically. Messi is ultimate no10 Maradona a no 8/10 .
Guys just stop. Messi has the trophies, both more and better. Messi has the stats with a better goals and assist ratio. That right there should prove who’s the best, I don’t see any more arguments that need to be made… Taking into account that Messi is the by far best dribbler I have ever seen and probably the best passer as well, while still being a goal scoring machine and incredibly targeted by the opposing defense, I mean like, come on… Taking into account the magic we see from him, all the magical goals, genius off the ball movements and incredible leadership qualities, I mean look what he did to Inter Miami! A team last in the league, not winning a game in the last six is now arguably the best in the MLS with Messi scoring 9 goals in 6 games in the process at the age of 36 and not even knowing the language! That is not even close to what Ronaldo did to Al Nassr, not even comparable. That is just goated stuff from Lio Messi. Meanwhile, I can’t find a lot that Ronaldo is best at, maybe doing the knuckleball and jumping the highest? Not to forget the six pack… Because I know that I have seen better goal scorers than Ronaldo as well as better dribblers. Not to put any disrespect on Ronaldo but come on guys… Also, not even talking about the status they have in the national teams, Ronaldo being ignored and disrespected by his own teammates and Messi being a loved leader that everyone looks up too. So lets break down Messi's goals contribution this WC. His goal against Mexico its a goal which only a TOP finisher would score. His assist against Netherlands is an assist only a world class Midfielder like Ozil or Iniesta would see. His assist against Croatia is an assist only a World Class RW would give like Salah, Neymar etc. His goal against France. Not the most impressive, but a goal where he started it and a finish where it requires great positioning which a great ST should have. What i want to say is that Messi's WC performance showed us once again all the attributes he has as an attacking player and why he is the most complete player we have ever seen. There is no debate. At this point in history I think it's even absurd to suggest a debate between Messi and Ronaldo. We even have webpages like the messivsronaldo one, that keeps track of both players advance stats in real time. If you take a look you can see Messi being better at literally everything except for headers and penalties. And if we look people's argument in the past, we can find Ronaldo fans claiming him the better one because of his Eurocup win in 2016, while Messi having not won a mayor trophy with Argentina. A matter of opinion other than objective numbers. After Messi's Copa America the narrative was the trophy wasn't as prestigious. Now he has a World Cup resting on his stands. Another golden ball, being the oldest player ever to win it, the only one to have two. And probably the 8th ballon d'or on the way.
The stats are lie because messi been playing in his comfort zone for a long period whereas Ronaldo have to adapt to a new System. If messi goat he would set all the records before Ronaldo! Ronaldo way bigger impact than messsi! CR7 even ends barca dominance in El clasico.
