A 1741 Baroque Oratorio by Handel. An Oratorio was a religious equivalent to an Opera, usually performed in a theater during Lent. Rather than featuring characters and a plot, it is a musical retelling of Biblical stories. This piece is a Recitative that mixes Secco and Accompanied styles to heighten the drama.
0:00 - there were shepherds ts: 4/4 key: C maj -> F maj -> D maj written in recitative secco (speech like singing with only continuo accompaniment) sustained chords are played on the harpsichord in C major the recitative accompagnato is heard with the string accompaniment, with arpeggiated chords in F major 1:01 - glory to god opens w a passage of chords in homorhythmic texture accompanied by moving strings in the upper register word painting - tenors and bass sing an descending octave on “peace on earth” as if flying from heaven down to earth “good will toward men” is sung by all four voices in an imitative counterpoint, polyrhythmic texture
This is as close as I have ever heard anyone sing a recitativo secco (in English) correctly. She orphaned a few notes, but it was nice to hear her ignore the written rhythms and blow through the rests. Well done. This should act as a model for conservatory-trained singers.
And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and peace, on earth good will toward men.
Heh, glad you are liking the playlists. I teach music appreciation at Baruch College in New York, so I'm just constantly surfing youtube, looking for videos I can show my students. If I see anything I like I try to sock it away on a list.
ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-v_mZ6GYh2ls.html - personally I find it to be the best performance I've ever heard. Given it's King's College under Cleobury's directorship, its quality is hardly surprising. The quality of the performers with a return to traditional stylistic choices and instruments really comes together for this performance.
