Metabo HPT MultiVolt 18-Guage Brad Nailer NT1850DF Review
We recently tested the Metabo HPT 18V MultiVolt 18-gauge brad nailer Gauge Brad Nailer. This new nailer is touted to be 30% more compact, and 31% lighter than the previous model. The NT1850DF is part of the expanding MultiVolt system 18-volt and 36-volt power tools from Metabo HPT.
The Metabo HPT Brad Nailer is equipped with brushless motor technology and powered by a Compact 3.0Ah Lithium-Ion battery.
It weighs 4.4lbs [bare tool] and is equipped with an Air Spring Drive System that uses compressed air in a sealed cylinder to fire the nail.
Air Spring Drive System
The unit is filled at the factory to specified PSI with the piston in the lowered position. Once the tool is turned on, the brushless motor drives the piston so that it compresses the air into the cylinder.
When the trigger is actuated, compressed air is released, driving the piston down, resulting in the firing pin striking the nail at the same force as a pneumatic. Utilizing this sealed compressed results in zero ramp-up time.
Run-time and Capacity
The Metabo HPT brad nailer is capable of driving up to 1,650 brads per charge. The tools straight magazine holds 100 brads. This cordless brad nailer drives 5/8″ to 2″ brad nails and can fire at a 3 brad per second rate.
Note -= The tool will NOT lockout when empty, something I wish Metabo HPT had considered adding.
The Metabo HPT brad nailer features a low battery indicator, selective actuation, tool-less jam release, tool-less depth of drive, variable position belt hook, safety switch, and LED light. Selective actuation switch transitions between sequential mode and bump fire mode,
We liked the quick-clear nose with tool-less jam release for easy maintenance and reduced downtime. We installed approximately 1000 fasteners and did not encounter a single jamb when testing this nailer.
LED Light
The Metabo HPT has a bright spotlight that shines ONLY on the right side of the tool and completely misses the tool's contact tip. The result is the work surface to the right side of the tool is illuminated but not the working tip of the tool.
Depth of Drive
Metabo HPT improved the depth of drive knob and attachment over the previous model. The older model had a knob that if turned too many times would become disconnected. the newer model has a clip on the end to prevent this from happening - well done Metabo HPT.
Overall setting the depth of drive is easy, and very responsive. I was able to get noticeable results with quarter turns on the knob.
Power and Performance
We were able to successfully install brads in Oak, Mahogany, Pine, and Plywood boards with ease. We used the Metabo HPT brad nailer to install smaller trim parts as well as install tongue and groove beadboard.
Toe-Nailing
The Metabo HPT tip once depressed, was very accurate in brad placement in the tongue and groove nailing. It was powerful enough to toenail into ALL of the materials we tested.
Contact Tip
The Metabo HPT contact tip will not fire if you press down, and back off the surface a bit, to readjust the nailer. To fire a brad nail you need to fully back off the contact tip to reset the safety and then depress to engage the brad nailer. This can be a pain when trying to dial in your brad placement, and you find yourself moving the nailer around, to get into that “sweet-spot” nailing position.
Line Of Sight
The line of sight on this nailer is good, the nailer has an arrow on its contact tip, indicating where the brad nail is coming from, and once identified, we were easily able to achieve perfect accuracy.
Power Switch
The Metabo HPT brad nailer has a hard-to-operate trigger “slide-lock.” The button is too small and difficult to access, I just don't see people using it when you can simply take out the battery.
Improvements
Metabo HPT took our advice on reducing the size/weight of this nailer, as well as, improving the depth of drive knob attachment. The only thing I see now that could be improved is to add a dry fire lockout and relocate and improve the LED light.
Price
The Metabo HPT brad nailer sells as a kit for $349.00, which includes the tool, charger, [1] 3.o Ah battery, and a tool bag.
The Metabo HPT brad nailer is new and improved with its reduced size and weight. It's a solid nailer with impressive fastener penetration power and good accuracy. It has zero ramp-up time between fasteners allowing you can install brads smoothly and efficiently. #metabohpt #bradnailer #cordlessbradnailer

Friggin awesome! Smaller/lighter is better! I bought my cordless guns when they were Hitachi. I've got the 23, 18, 15 gauges, and a framer. I couldn't be happier. Well, now I could, because they just made this one. Haha! The "older" ones used the same tool body and just made design modifications for the different nail sizes. Even the 15gauge is the same basic gun with just different magazine and such. So, this is great that they completely revamped the 18 gauge. I probably won't buy it, though. I can live with the super sized one I have now. Thanks for the video! Good stuff as always!

I have the 16 ga, 18ga and framer, gen 1. These damn things won't die. I will replace each one as soon as it dies with Milwaukee, but hasn't happened yet. Only gripes are - the nail follower in framer gets dirty easily and doesn't push nails as hard so I get occasional misfire. - the 16ga doesn't like 2.5" nails period!

I love my Hitachi 18v guns, so I’m excited to see improved versions coming to market. My only gripe is with the 16ga nailer which seems to not like sinking any nails longer than 1.75” which is quite disappointing. The 18ga has no issues with 2” nails and the 15ga and 30deg framer work like a charm. My compressor has been collecting dust. I would like to see an 18v coil roofing nailer though

They're about the same in power and speed, but the Hitachi is better for 3 main reasons(in my experience). -The gen2 M18 leaves a flat line indent in all but the hardest woods. The gen2 Hitachi leaves just the dot of the nail head. They both sink nails no problem. Something is causing the Hitachi to sink nails more smoothly. -The Hitachi/Metabo hpt is smaller and lighter than the Milwaukee, and noticeably more comfortable in the hand. It feels like you're holding a pneumatic 18g with no hose. -The Hitachi(like most of their cordless guns)can be serviced at home since it uses air while the Milwaukee uses nitrogen and must be sent in. This is huge long term. The M18 will last 1-2 years under moderate use before it becomes weakened to the point where it's not usable. When you warranty it. Milwaukee will tell you how much it cost them to recharge and/or replace the cylinder, and it's about $300. The warranty is 5 years, so you'll get it serviced 2 or 3 times under warranty. After that it's cheaper to just buy a new gun. The Hitachi can be serviced by the owner for free indefinitely, or until the parts themselves break down. The warranty in the US is also about 2-3 times the length of Milwaukee's warranty.

@Fpsnut
@Fpsnut 3 года назад
@@Zombieboxx1 I own milwaukee stapler. Tried using it on an underlayment job with 1" staples (I think) and it's basically unusable. I figure same goes for pretty much every other battery powered stapler. Heat is the enemy of these tools, especially since they try and make them as small as possible so not much ventilation. With m18 stapler in my case, starting with it from cold in the morning, staples on edges every few inches and about 1'x1' throughout sheet, I got about 4 sheets in before it overheated and shut down. I had 60 sheets to staple down, lol. Once it overheated, I had to set it down and if I waited about 15 minutes I could get another sheet in, 2 if I paced myself. One thing I noticed, if I pushed stapler to its limit of 3 shots per second, it would overheat extremely fast where as if I paced myself and deliberately went slower, maybe 1 shot per second, it would last longer and let me do more before overheating at the cost of time. So these staplers in my experience are a no go for big jobs but are ridiculously convenient for smaller jobs where maybe you're only doing one room and not a whole house. One thing that helped is we had AC running in house we were remodeling and every chance I get I would put it over the vent to cool it off fast. Ideally, IMO, if you really want to do big jobs with battery staplers, you would need 2 or 3 so you have a few cooling off while you're working the other one. One annoying problem my milwaukee stapler (and brad nailer too) has is a tendency to dry fire with plenty of staples and nails. It's like it can't grab a hold of next nail/staple and just keeps on dry firing with you having no idea. Very annoying having to go back and figure out where it happened and redo your work. That's why I'll continue to use air staplers for big jobs. Hopefully milwaukee fixes this feeding issue in gen 3.

We have 2 Milwaukee 18ga. and the installers really like them. We have multiple battery platforms just because different manufactures make certain tools that fit our needs better than others so I never buy any tool just because of its color , I buy for performance, features and ergonomics. When you said you have to reset the safety each time before firing, that alone told me I don't one. So many tools have something like that, that one unnecessary feature that tells me I don't want it. Glad to hear it here, so now I know and know it's not a tool for us.

@@brady53anderson No problems with these particular guns, but over the years I have had problems with some nails or pins. Some of the generic brands do seem to not always work so well in some guns and if you hold a clip of them next to a clip that do work the spacing will be a little different. We buy in bulk and the local supplier we use always stands behind what they sell us, so they have replaced different fasteners a few times over the years. It could be the gun also but for us it's always been the fasteners that have caused any feed or jamming problems.

@@brady53anderson I buy mainly from Mid-Atlantic Fastners and purchase by the pallet. The last few times the majority of the brads, and narrow crown staples have been Hitachi and Duo-Fast. Framing nails were all Paslode, corrugated fasteners are all Senco. The have there own generic brand also but there is little price difference recently , we have had some of them not work so great in the past though. They buy whatever they can get the best deals on when they purchase also so brands change each time we purchase. I usually buy only once or some times twice per year. With the prices going up so much recently I bought enough to last us around 5+ years early this year; so we're well stocked for awhile. I have many brands of pneumatic guns in the shop, I only use battery guns for the installation guys.

I just bought the metabo 18g cordless. I like it much better than the Milwaukee one. Pros, it’s waaaaay lighter than the Milwaukee one, fires quicker than the Milwaukee, has an access panel so you can refill the canister with air instead of taking it to service place to fill with nitrogen once you put the gun into maintenance mode. Cons firing pin is too big for an 18 g nail head ( but I managed to file it down and it makes a much cleaner hole) and the safety release I think is not placed right. Should be around the firing pin area, not behind it. Other than that I give this gun a 9/10.
