Metabo TS 254 Table Saw Review After Seven Years of Use

Is the Metabo TS 254 table saw worth it? Well, the saw is not bad, but it has a major issue. The height mechanism gets easily broken, and it takes forever to get new parts.
However, this is the only issue I had with the saw, but it's a pretty big one unfortunately.
This is a quick review and how-to-fix video.
Thanks for watching, don't forget to subscribe.

You should also have written in the headline: "How to repair the height adjustment on a Metabo TS 254".

Dear Sir, A nice review which truly shows the positive as well as the negative aspects of modern power tools. If only they were more long term reviews which truly reflects the real value of these machines which seldom are considered. Very well done. Kind regards.

I've just had one of these delivered (July 2020). So far, I'm pleased with the design features and performance. Before using it, I had a good look inside and spotted a couple of small screws that hadn't been tightened properly in the Chinese factory where it was made, so fixed that before switching it on. This is not unusual on lower-end equipment (£319), so I'm not udnuly concerned. The accuracy seems pretty good. I'd prefer it if the ruler had an imperial scale rather than just metric. My first project is to make a table/stand for the saw, as the Metabo ones were out of stock.

Hi Howard, How are you getting on with the Metabo. I’ve been thinking about the Metabo 254m (also £319) and would be keen to know your opinion. I’m pretty new to this stuff and looking around youtube I see a lot of people making replacement fences, tops and cross sleds etc to improve accuracy. I’m not sure wether to get an Evo Rage 5 and make a new fence etc or pay the extra and get the metabo. Advice from anyone would be appreciated.

@@andyaskins100 Hi Andy, so far I'm pleased. Previously, I used much costlier professional circular saws when I worked in secondary schools, but I've been able to achieve better accuracy with the Metabo. I don't have experience with other portable bench/table saws, but I do have a basic Evo compound mitre saw. I had planned to buy the Evo Rage 5S table saw, but they were out of stock. Same with the Makita MLT100 (£400), so when I couldn't wait any longer I researched others and came up with the Metabo TS254.. Regarding accuracy, the rip fence can be set spot-on, so no issues there. The cross-slide indexing is hopelessly inaccurate though, and it's a sloppy fit in its guide slot. That doesn't mean it can't be set dead on, it just means I have to hold a combination square hard against it, while tightening the locking handle, and then while cutting, the cross slide must be held against one side of the guide slot, to compensate for the sloppy fit. I haven't made a sled yet, and haven't seen the need for it. It's something I might do in future. One characteristic I will need to address is the height adjuster, which can't be locked into position, and tends to vibrate itself slightly lower in use. This was a problem when I was cutting tenons and needed the blade to sit at a precise height. The mechanism could do with having a little more friction, or a locking device. Anyway, comparing the Metabo 254M mitre saw against my very cheap Evolution saw, again, the Evo can make very accurate, repeatable cuts, but I've noticed a lot of arcing in the motor recently. This characteristic betrays its cut-price origins, and I would expect the Metabo to be a much better choice.

It is important to lubricate the rails and the thread for lifting mechanism. First i did it with chain wax to prevent dust sticking, but i did end up just wit the oil lubricant and it works good. I have this saw 4 years and now is sitting in the workshop most of the time.

It doesn't look like they sent you the newer setup with the buttress threaded push system. A replacement system with fine threading will only lead to it breaking down again.

I have it also, really like it. Table scratches very easily, that is my biggest gripe. If my height thingy breaks I am lucky to have the tools needed to make replacements myself (probably:p), but sucks that you had issues with it.
@DieterSchneider
@DieterSchneider 5 лет назад
The scratches does not bother me as it does not affect the cut quality. You only need a screwdriver and a allen wrench to replace it, but it's still a hazzle as you need to change the whole gear flange :/

I have this saw since 2013. I used it a lot for first 2 year, then I swap to Dewalt and this saw for backup only till now. This saw has lots of issues. 1: it will not take any thin kerv saw blade (shame). 2: some parts are fragile, such as blade stopper (for changing blade), blade raise up handle, legs ...... 3: Some time saw blade coming off even you use Metabo original 10 inch blade. 4: Fence need to accur every 2-3 months because of poor design.

I am seriously considering buying one of those. I am unlikely to use it nearly as much as you do, so should get good value out of it - and Metabo is based in my hometown, so there's a bit of local patriotism involved, too

I remember seeing a review of this saw where they said the height mechanism broke, and when Metabo sent the replacement part they sent a revised version with a ACME/trapoziodal thread that fixed the problem. Was your replacement different?

Had a look today at work. Are you on about the 2 screws on top at the handle end. That you see when you unscrew the fence that slides out . Or the ones underneath at the handle end. That tighten a metal spring thing that locks onto the table.

Hi may i know the freud blade arbor size ure using. The original arbor is 30mm. How can you fit freud blade with 5/8" arbor size with this saw?
@DieterSchneider

The arbor is actually thinner, with bushings. so both 30mm and 5/8" fits. Don't know if that is the standard on newer models though.

This type of table saw is NOT designed to last many years with daily use. If you want a long lasting saw , then buy a heavy duty saw with at least 5 Hp. motor perfectly flat cast iron table , a precision fence etc. It’s amazing the unrealistic expectations people have with a plastic $500 to 800 dollar saw.

This is a nice to see video. I've had mine for some years and my major problems are: - lift mechanizem is not workign smoothly, some of gears are broken, and there is also some other problme that the motor gets a bit stuck and stays put when lowering the blade then it "falls" slightly when lowered enough - there is a bit wobble maybe of the blade, just slight - I had to readjust the table saw fence, because it was not straight at some times Otherwise it's a good saw. Why and when would you remove the riving knife behind the blade? When and why would you use the fence in such way that it is "L" shaped like you showed in your video? I saw some features on your review I did not even knew existed so thanks :)
