Metabolism Memorization Made Easy: Enzyme Names | MCAT Content

Metabolism as it is taught in most MCAT review books and videos is made to seem like nothing more than a slog through rote memorization. A series of reactions catalyzed by specific enzymes with no underlying logic other than this step is catalyzed by this reaction and produces this product. And to be fair when I first started learning about metabolism I saw it this way and would spend 20-30 minutes per day writing out the pathways until I finally had them down. Within two weeks I had forgotten over half of the pathways I had previously known.
Metabolism was abstract and it seemed as though there was no rhyme or reason to the steps and products, but when I took step back I realized that most of metabolism makes a lot of sense. Enzymes all tend to conform to a specific consistent naming scheme and certain classes of enzymes consistently do the same thing. By focusing on these trends rather than the specific steps of all of the different pathways you can save yourself a lot of time when you finally sit down to learn glycolysis or the pentose phosphate pathway.
In this video, we will discuss what different enzyme names tell you and what you can expect to see with each different type. We will then apply this information to a couple of MCAT style questions that way when you learn the various metabolism pathways you will have a framework for keeping everything organized.

If you keep uploading, I have no doubt that you're going to explode in the MCAT space. These videos are really good. I'll probably come back in a year or two and see that you're at 100,000 subscribers

Thank you. I am planning on continuing to upload and hope to make a comprehensive resources for the MCAT here on YT. I just got a new puppy and thought I would still be able to keep up with my YT schedule. LOL that definitely didn’t happen, but I will be getting started with more videos here soon now that I the new pup mostly under control.

Glad you find the infographics engaging. Studying for the MCAT is already stressful enough I figure it’s nice to try and make the process a bit more fun when I can.

Hi Makenzie, Glad you are finding the videos helpful! I do offer private tutoring and if you are interested we could set up a free consult to chat and figure out how I can help. You can send me an email at chriscernac@eightfoldlearning.com to set that up. Additionally, I also offer group tutoring called office hours if you are interested if you would prefer a group setting. I only have one spot left currently, but a couple more will be opening up in a week or two. If you are interested in that you can check it out at my website here: eightfoldlearning.com/officehours/ Best, Chris

Can you make a sugar/carbs video?
@EightfoldMCAT
@EightfoldMCAT 2 года назад
I can definitely add it to the list. Is there something specific you are hoping for with that video? For example, would you want it to cover the naming of carbohydrates or the stereochemistry etc.?
