This is gonna blow your mind. The music that your parents referred as oldies (70s, mostly 80s music) when You were a kid were more recent at the time than music that You listened to in the late 90s and 00s.
@@Ghashlord I had this revelation a year or 2 ago. I am 47. Back then their stuff already seemed so old. Already on the "oldies" station. Man time flies.
I know what you're saying. I also like the sonics of the higher registers. Don't get me wrong, I love a good Drop E 0-0-1-0 riff but I find it's often quite muddy and undefined compared to that tightness and melody you can really hear in tunings like Drop C# and Drop D. I also find playing a 6 string more pleasing for me personally. I have 7 string that I sometimes play in G# standard, but I always find myself spending more time playing in D# standard or Drop C# with my 6 string.
Yeah very funny ha ha. Riffs still do exist today, in fact they are even more powerful and heavier than ever before, since a 7-string or even 8-string guitar creates much more powerful riffs than a standard 6 string guitar And there are still Melodic Metalcore bands today too, in fact even "Ambient" or *"a t m o s p h e r I c"* Metalcore, which lifts the sound to a much higher Level than ever before. Just because you don't know good examples today, doesn't mean they don't exist. It just means you didn't dig deep enough. Granted, they are not easy to find because they are more in the underground scene, but they do exist.
@@RockandMetal-u9x I was just joking, my favourite album of all time is from 2016 and there's more riffs in that one album that some bands discographies. Also they use 6 strings tuned up, not down. Tuning and guitar strings mean nothing if you have good riffs.
@@henrywalton5967 that's just your own personal preference then, but I (and many others) like heavy and groovy Metallic riifs, so there's nothing wrong with that. I don't know what band you're talking about exactly but if hey tuned higher than E standard? then it would be hardy Metal at that point, if at all. I guess at that point it's more of a Progressive Rock rather than actually Metal. Again, not knowing who the band is I can only draw some vague conclusions
@@RockandMetal-u9x I mean one of my absolute favourite bands is.fear Factory and they have been using B and A tuning since the 90's and some of the newer albums have 8 strings too. The band I was referring to is Vektor, all their albums are in F standard. Check out the the album Terminal Redux it's definitely metal!
@@henrywalton5967 Yeah Fear Factory is dope, they are one of the most established modern Metal band for a reason Vektor is indeed very interesting. Didnd't knew them before. It proves that even a higher tuned guitar can be used for Metal, although this style can not exactly hold up with the more heavy bands in terms of groove and power but it shows how wide the spectrum in metal music is.
First of all, one thing does not have to exclude the other thing. The 2000's had riffs AND goove at the same time and so does metal bands still today. Of course it always depends what specific bands we're tanking about because bands have very different style, but riffs still do exist today in metal music and groovy too (and even melodies, I know crazy right) you just need to dig deeper. And to the other guy talking shit about nu metal: Nu-metal is actually one of the best modern Metal genres it has heavy and powerful metal riffs with Groovey and rhythmically drumming beats and powerful heavy vocals with breakdowns and some pop elements to make it more catchy and interesting. What more could you want? Second, the Metal today is nothing like the nu metal from the 2000's, it's very different so your statement doesn't make any sense Not everything that has heavy metal riffs with pop elements is automatically nu metal. The metal today is just a very different typ of its own and it's not all bad. There are still very good examples of modern metal bands today, just because you don't know aby doesn't mean they don't exist. It just means that you don't know much about modern metal Music or you just didn't dig deep enough
@@RockandMetal-u9x Chill out there, your opinion is yours and theirs is theirs, full stop. And Nu-Metal does suck lol, I'll take Death, Blackened Death, Tech Death, Black, Avantgarde, early 2000's Metalcore, Pagan/ Viking, Thrash, and a number of other subgenres way before most Nu-Metal lmao.
You opinion is irrelevant, Nu-Metal is one of the best Metal genre that ever existed that's a fact (together with Metalcore and Symphonic metal) it helped to make metal music more dynamic and more interesting and more catchy than ever before. Nu-Metal had the same impact like Grunge did for Rock music. Without it rock and metal would still be boring 80's shit. It's good that metal evolved and progressed instead of rotting away Black Metal is by far the worst, it's very monotonic and boring wall of noise, no meloics or emotions, only screaming, no changes in rhythmics or patterns (rhytm don't even exist in black metal to begin with) and it has no Groove because again no rhythm, just a blunt wall of noise. It's like flushing the toilet or turning on my vacuum cleaner which makes the same annoying noise lol I can't even take you serious dude 😂 You are the type of person everyone makes fun about when thinking about typical metalheads, like your living in a cave and probably have no girlfriend (because let's be honest what female Girl would ever like black metal?) 😂😂
@@rivertam711 In 2004 the Metalcore, Deathcore music was a "new" thing. Much less band was, and muchless unknown theme was, and it was 20 years ago. As I lay Dying second album release was in 2005. And the all metalcore meme what we know now its from As I Lay Dying and Killswitch Engage. And sorry for my english but I try my best
Yeah, listen to black or death metal and some bands experiment all over the place, but you can also hear basically a record that could have been released 20 years ago or this year if you want.
@@eternalfaeri1415 then again the "Metal bands" from the 1960's is hardly the same as modern Metal today, it's almost like a completely different sub-genre now entirely. The "classic" Metal bands from the 70's sound more like generic Rock bands for modern standards; simple and easy Rock riffs, simple structure, simple drumming patterns (nothing too crazy or exessive like today) Thrash Metal and Death Metal in the 1980's was the first real thing that can be recognized as actually "Heavy Metal" music, with lots of excessive drumming (blasting beats) using double-kick bass drums and more aggressive style overall. Anything before the 1980's was just too soft, too slow and too calm to be considered Heavy Metal music LoL
Poison, the Knife or the noose?… Yeah 2005-2008 was a splendid time period for metalcore. Killing with a smile and Horizons are my favorite, but Shogun is my favorite Trivium album for sure.
🥱😪😴 Metal didn't even exist in the 70s It wa just generic rock (just generic stander E rock riffs and slow paced Rock drumming and soft rock vocals) heavy metal only started to exist in the 80s with the arise of Thrash Metal and death metal which had a very aggressive and heavy sound for the first time in music history, which actually made it very different from all the generic rock bands before
I hit the Killswitch when I drove down parkway drive and got hit by a bullet meant for my valentine, then I wondered what all that remains as I lay dying
@@tsk3884 you guys are literally limiting yourself to a specific era which means you are missing out on anything good or interesting that could come past that era. I rather prefer to have all possible eras combined because there are always some good bands and songs in all decades. There is still some good stuff today, maybe it's not so easy to find anymore, but it does exist.
@@alternativerockemo6783 i keep an eye on the modern stuff too my friend because i belong in this era cuz im 21 years old but i grew up with the 70-80-90s and a bit of 00s and my soul belongs there but i appreciate some modern stuff too
@@tsk3884 I get what you mean, people usually prefer what they grew up with as it creates emotions, feelngs and memories of the past times they are familiar (nostalgia) I was born in the 90's and grew up with the 90's and 2000's music mostly, although I didn't even know many Rock or Metal bands at that time because in our country (Germany) Rock was not really Mainstream anymore, only generic POP and Hip Hop was Mainstream 90% of the time. Although there were a few rare exeptions such as Rammstein, Linkin Park, System of a Down, Bullet For My Valentine, but those were only the rare exceptions (less than 10% of the total Mainstream) So I was very happy when in 2006 RU-vid came along and gave us the possibility to find new Rock and Metal bands outside the Mainstream. I literally discovered 99% of my most favorite Rock and Metal bands from the Internet, mostly modern era bands (2000+) I still remember chilling in my room in 2006 at the age of 15 years, jamming to amazing Rock bands I just discovered that day by accident... literally my entire life changed from that day on, I was obsessed with it for years to come Personally I like the modern 2000+ music more, it has more complex structure, it's deeper and more diverse, with more emotional range and more vocal range and can be a lot more energetic and intensive than compared to the older stuff from the pre-90's There are so many new sub-genres today that didn't even exist before the 90's (Grunge, Post-Grunge, Nu-Metal, Symphonic Metal, Metalcore, Post-Hardcore, Pop Punk) these are all my most favorite sub-genres, which is probably the reason why I'm not so much interested into the 80's music because it was missing the genres I like the most today
In 2004, my guitarist would call these riffs "tag lines." They all sounded so formulaic. At least in 2024, especially stuff from Mitch in Silent Planet, there is a lot more dynamics to the writing.
@@alternativerockemo6783not at all, previous generations wrote SONGS as well as sick ass riffs that entire generations know, put on davidian in a room of 40 year olds we ALL know it. but the modern shit is just noise for noise sake like yeah mate some of us grew out of our cannibal corpse phase in 96.
