By defeating the U.S. Navy in Midway Japan hoped to force them to capitulate, and let Japanese dominate the Pacific. US cryptographers found out the date and location of the attack, and the U.S. Navy to prepared their own ambush. All four of Japan’s large aircraft carriers and one of their heavy cruisers were sunk. The Battle of Midway resulted in American victory, and was Japan’s first major defeat against the Allies.
