Swedish heavy metal, with a helping of guitar rifts, some barefoot drum kicks, a dash of fire and a whole heap of historical themed lyrics, and you have a recipe for Sabaton. What an experience!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Sabaton for the first time, performing "Uprising” live at the Polish Woodstock Festival in 2012.

Your question about the hair care is funny, because a lot of metal guys didnt take care about their hair. They let them growing and the most of them use normal shampos. Its a traditional thing in the metal scene. Punks have Mohawks and Metalheads have long hair, it was a symbol of status and stand for the difference between goth, punks and metalheads, every side had their own hairstyle. But yes... there a lot of little male princess under metalheads XD To getting bald is the dead for some of them XD

Saw some Polish flags there in the audience. Sabaton did an epic song about the battle of Vienna in i think 1483 when a huge army of Ottomans lay siege to Vienna and the HRE emperor called upon its princes and allies to relieve them. They gathered their men and marched for Vienna. The Polish army consisted of mainly cavalry and arguably the best of their time at the end of cavalry charges being relevant. The Winged Hussars charged down the mountain side and defeated the Ottoman army in spectacular way. If the Ottomans had taken Vienna, the road towards the north and west of Europa for expansion would have been open. The Polish of that era saved the rest of Europe from muslim invasion and yes there are many heroic tales regarding the Polish. Sabaton is the band to underscore every single event in history that can be classified as heroic and i bet the Polish in the crowd love them for just that.

And hopefully more understanding for some polish irritability on some topics. This Uprising took about 230000 civil victims bombed, raped, murdered, burned, slayed, buried alive, executed by Germans (with some help of Ukrainian Kossak, Russian, Lithuanian and Azer units - mostly volunteer bandits). So please, understand when we sometimes get nervous about the history 🤷‍♂

I would so recomend the live version with them of "En livstid i krig"/"A life time of war". Choose the Swedish version and have the captions turned on. The song is released in both English and Swedish versions BUT there is a major difference. Both are about the 30-years war. The Swedish version is from the perpective of a single soldier where the english version focused more on the war itself. Joakims singing qualitys and baritone really comes inte play...AND if you like crowds singing it back, The Swedes are singing the majority of the first verse agfter Joakim has just sung the opening line.

Carlous Rex is a masterpiece the whole album the title track song Carlous Rex has the greatest line of all time I was crown by God not by the church as my power is divine such a empowering and invigorating line that also has significant historical meaning cause during the time of King Charles the Xll the power and influence of the church was waning due to rise of science and medicine thus the Heads of State had more power to govern without needing the church approval

If you want to read more about the historical context for this song, check out a book called Rising '44. It's about the Warsaw Uprising, and there's one moment that always stuck out to me in which the son of the Polish Premier or some such political figure was fighting on a corner against the Nazis as they believed the Allies were approaching. The kid's dad had specifically placed him in that location. When things started getting bad, this fellow soldiers and heroes said they needed to go. Then, this teenage kid said "that's not why my father put me here." He was later burned by a German flame thrower. The heroism has moved me to tears on more than one occasion.

Thanks for speaking up, distant cousin. My great uncle was lost at Wizna, and his little brother (my grandfather) fled the country in 1942 with his young wife and 6 month old daughter (my mother). He volunteered for the US Army 3 months after they arrived in the US. His greatest regret was that the US did not liberate his homeland. He was never able to return, dying before the collapse of communism. I was able to visit in 1992, and tried to find my family. For the "crime" of fighting in 1939, helping local Jews flee and fighting in the resistance, they had been sent to the camps. As far as I can find out, none came out. Keep it strong. Poland cannot fall under the boot of another power ever again.

So the metalhead long hair relates partially to the rock bands of the time metal became a thing. Long hair was a common part of the look of rock bands at the time and the counterculture of the time. Anti establishment statement. Men with long hair at those times, and even now, are judged because of that choice. That plus it just so happened that it makes headbanging extra fun. The other option most often seen is bald, I assume because it is similar in its counterculture roots as a choice. That plus losing hair happens to a lot of men and it is a lot cooler under those bright lights (I think I see more bald drummers than anything).

One thing I would like to add that's quite impressive on Joachim's part is that in the last bit of chorus, which is in Polish ("Warszawo, walcz!"), he's gotten the phonemes for "sz" (/ʂ/) and "cz" (/t͡ʂ/) perfectly. From my experience, no one outside of Poland gets these right (which is understandable, it takes a LOT of niche experience to differentiate /d͡ʐ/, /ʂ/, /t͡ʂ/, and /ʐ/, as almost no languages ever make use of them), and it's almost always mispronounced as /ɕ/ or /t͡ɕ/; to have someone entirely non-Slavic nail it down is as rare as it is appreciated. :)

I saw that. Kind of reminiscent of Helloween at Wacken in 2018, except Kai Hansen and Michael Kiske are band members again, recording new material. 1 band with 3 singers, whereas Sabaton basically had 2 full bands playing at the same time with just one singer. Both were epic performances in their own right.

I love the way you notice such specific details (I’ve watched the video dozens of times and never noticed the drummer was barefoot) and you point out why the music is so good by deconstructing what makes it stick and land so well. for the inevitable flood of "do all the Sabaton songs" comments, here's my picks: En Livstid I Krig (Live - The Great Tour - Gothenburg) - a story about the 30 years war. for the crowd reaction and for the epicness. it is sung here in swedish (recommend subtitles). now the english version of that song actually tells a very different story so you might want to find a translation for the swedish lyrics (for the feels... all the feels...) Bismarck (Official Music Video) - a song about the German battleship Bismarck and its fateful journey. video made in cooperation with wargaming (google world of warships) and thus absolute epicness. fun fact: the boat owner is (i think) a grandson of an actual survivor. No Bullets Fly (Animated Story Video) - this song comes including its history packed into one video and gets me shivers every time. a story about a German Luftwaffe pilot not shooting down but instead escorting home a damaged British bomber in ww2 Seven Pillars of Wisdom (Official Music Video) - enough ww2? Lawrence of Arabia then? featuring Indy Neidell, the host of Sabaton History (see below) 82nd All The Way (Official Lyric Video) & the same song covered by Amaranthe & 82nd All The Way ft. Amaranthe (Live - The Great Tour - Oslo) - for the marathon :) I could go on and list every one of their songs, because they are all pure epicness. As above are mostly recent ones, let me add an old one into the mix: Cliffs Of Gallipoli (Official Music Video) Also Sabaton has its own Sabaton History channel here on the YubTubs where every song is explained from a creational and historical point of view. great stuff!

Joakim's voice is unique among heavy and power metal bands. Nobody else can replicate him. The pronunciation of the "r" sound is the main characteristic of his singing, and also his relaxed baritone range, which covers more than the average baritone. The reason some drummers go barefoot is not only what you mentioned, but also because of the weight of what they wear. Of all musicians, the one that works the hardest and is most affected by weight (including sweat into the clothes) is the drummer, due the arm and leg work they got to perform. It is also the reason you see drummers go shirtless before any other band member in live shows. Less restrictions, better performance. The drummer is also the hardest band member to replace when something goes bad in the band. Even getting a better vocalist is easy next to a new drummer that at least performs as good, has roughly the same stamina, and is willing to commit to the band.

First one I heard was Lost Battalion when I was in Air Cadets, first year into the fun ride of being a kid learning discipline like that, at General Training at Cadet Training Center Trenton. Literally across the street from the airbase, so all you'd hear every night is the sound of Globemaster IIIs taking off, landing, and generally flying around. Alongside other aircraft of course........... But yeah, I heard Lost Battalion as my first song to be introduced to them by one of the Sargeants who ran my flight. he'd always have a speaker with him playing either the DOOM 2016 OST (mostly BFG Division) or Sabaton. One day, a year or so later, I found them again by chance, by scrolling through RU-vid. First time I put Lost Battalion on in my room I had the feeling of "Yes. This is my music. YYYYYYYYYEEEEEAAASSSSSSSSSSS!" The beat, the tone, that song got me hooked for good that night. Its amazing what things can be forgotten or remembered just by the right note.
