Metal Casting at Home Part 90, Waste Oil Burner Part 1

My furnace burner has been redesigned for simpler construction and easier dismantling. My original used a Hago siphon nozzle that I had to import from the US. The shipping, custom charges and VAT on the import meant the part cost around £65.
The new design uses a nozzle that was £12 including world wide delivery.
1.0 mm nozzle: bit.ly/2RtjQpC
Parts were printed on a Sovol SV01 printer : sovol3d.com?sca_ref=895359.hScoXg1y01
Copper tube and 2" stainless steel exhaust repair tube came from Ebay sellers.
I have uploaded the STL file here www.thingiverse.com/thing:403...
Burner is good for waste oil, vegetable oil, kerosene, etc.

I have tried a lot of the DIY waste oil burner designs, but I have had mixed results. I built this one and did a test run yesterday--simply amazing. I did have to pre-heat my oil, but it was incredible how easy it was to light. I'm not good at soldering, so I had to build it with compression fittings. I used a male to male street elbow for the oil inlet on the top. I had to cut the threads down a little on the side going into the nozzle so everything would fit in the stainless pipe, but it does fit. I love that the design is modular. I can pull the whole stainless pipe out if I need to clean the nozzle on the burner or make any adjustments. Now I need to track down (or make) a variable speed blower like yours and I'll be set!

Thanks for the feedback, glad to hear it works for you. I have my fuel tank about 5ft high and find no pre heat oil is needed although if the air temp is below about 15C I warm it to make it flow better, this is for waste motor oil.

We have basically the same set up except I'm using 2.5" 304ss. And my air hose uses standard coupling so i just plug it in straight from the compressor. Don't know what size nozzle you have but i got the biggest one if i remember right. I tested it at 50psi and injected oil from a syringe. If it never works as a forge i still get ginormous flames for fun any way😁

very nice myfordboy! my current furnace is nearly worn out (all the spalling from the repeated heating/coolings i think), i'll be trying a cylinder instead of my little propane bottle shape next time too. I have some lovely 8mm thick 80mm pipe i'll use for the burn/mix chamber - much more durable and easier to weld etc. If it wasnt for the fact i have an ancient air compressor i'd be tempted to go back to the siphon nozzles! great vid as always.

Hello from Seattle WA! Another terrific video and one that I'm going to follow this weekend. Since I'll be moving from AL to Iron I'm assuming this is the burner you use with Waste Oil for your Iron castings, correct? Quick question... I'm surprised that the silver solder doesn't melt or eventually break down since its at the very business end of the burner. Obviously it doesn't get hot enough at that location, but just out of curiosity how is that possible? Thanks so much for all you do! your experience and guidance is so very appreciated! Best, Bob
@myfordboy
@myfordboy 4 года назад
No problem using silver solder inside the burner. It would have to reach near to the meting point of the brass nozzle to melt. Inside the burner tube it is cooled by the blower air too.This burner will melt iron.

Excellent, I have noticed how affordable these Chinese waste oil nozzles have become too, like you I acquired an expensive nozzle but can only melt iron in my furnace just like yours using the Artful Badgers waste oil nozzle which partly preburns some of the oil before it enters the furnace proper. Will you size your nozzle to melt iron? It should be interesting to see your furnace do that.

The 100 psi is the standard setting from Beckett. One selects the nozzle and flame retention plate from the Beckett catalog for a given btu yield value. Both the fuel pressure and the air intake damper are adjustable. On my last test firing I went from stone cold to 10# of melted aluminum in 30 minutes flat. I haven't tried bronze or cast iron yet.

Hi Myford boy. You may have covered this before but have you tried different waste oils to comapre ? Obviously you have two major sources potetntially - motor oil from garages and vegetable based oils from chippys and take-aways. Have you used both to see what they burn like and temparatures they produce ? Thanks for the great video's !
@myfordboy
@myfordboy 4 года назад
I have only used waste motor oil. My supply has run out at the moment due to the lockdown and I have been using kerosene. The kerosene is easier to light but motor oil lights OK too. I believe the motor oil is hotter but have not real tests to prove.

@@myfordboy Thanks for your reply. Can you tell me what purpose the vane you made and inserted into the assembly was for ? I see that it was static and also before the atomizer. Was it there to make a sort of vortex air flow around the nozzle assembly ? thanks
@myfordboy
@myfordboy 4 года назад
The idea is to make the air spin as it leaves the burner. it's a feature of commercial burners. You need a means of centering the nozzle in the tube so this is how I did it. I also tried it with a simpler 3 prong arrangement, not sure if it was any worse . You can see my earlier version here myfordboy.blogspot.com/p/oil-burner.html

@myfordboy 2 года назад
I have not tried to burn waste oil with the burner not in the furnace. I have my waste oil tank mounted about 5ft above the burner to give some pressure to the oil in cold weather I heat the oil to about 40C. With kerocene the fuel tank can be at floor level and the nozzle will syphon the fuel but it does not work for waste oil.

@@myfordboy I solved. Thank you for right support. I mount the oil tank 1mt above the burner, change the tube form ID 6mm to ID 8mm (to achive more flux) and warm the oil to 35-40°C and I put the burner into the furnace and itworks perfectly on the first try. I see that it needs only a very little air flow from blower to have a good flame. Is it correct?
@myfordboy
@myfordboy 2 года назад
The amount of air needed would probably depend on the furnace design. Just adjust the air flow to achive a good flame. ^mm pipe was a bit small mine is bigger, maybe 10mm, sorry I forgot to mention that. A lot of waste oil burner uses have to start with propane or keroscene and switch to oil when the furnace is hot. I have never found this necessary.
@ivanogennero5056
@ivanogennero5056 2 года назад
@@myfordboy Are the internal burner's pipe also 10 mm? For internal burner's pipes I use ID 6mm for air, ID 8mm for oil (up to needle valve) and 10mm rubber tube from needle valve and oil tank. My furnace is the exact copy of yours, and works like a charm ! :)

Have been planning some Vids but with half the country on fire ATM, including places very close to me, doing burning Vids would not be the best idea. Maybe something around March when things calm down or we get some decent rain.
