All you really need is a detector, a digging tool, and a decent pinpointer. Best not to skimp on those three things because quality matters! Nice to have, dig pouch with a holster for your pinpointer, so you have a way to keep your finds and haul away your trash. And gloves… don’t forget gloves! Great video - thanks for sharing!

As a new person starting out, I was a bit disappointed that you skipped over the most important tool- the metal detector itself. Some have meters, some don't, some have displays etc. What is nice vs need to have on the detector itself?

metal detectors peaked around 2000-2005 era, and everything sold now is just a rehash of old Whites designs, with bells and whistles added. If you want a rock solid, reliable detector, get a Whites 5900 Pro SL, it's fully adjustable with knobs for signal strength from the coil, ground balance, discrimination, hot rocks rejection, and it can be cranked up like an old 1970s Pioneer stereo, and puts a lot of power into the ground. in good soil with a 15" coil it'll go as deep as any, or further.
@TheHistoryDigger1
@TheHistoryDigger1 Год назад
Thx. Whatever works for you is good. I’ll stick w my Deus ll. I appreciate that it’s fast, wireless, lightweight, has a telescopic shaft and uses multiple frequencies. Those may be considered bells and whistles but there important features.

Go buy some old ACU or similar military pants, with the velcro knee pockets, so you can slide foam in. I'd probably get some of that thin black foam, that's flexible, and only 1/4" thick. Cut out a knee pad, large enough to fit the pocket, then cut another piece about half the size, and glue it so the smaller piece is covering a little above and below the knee. Next, cut a bunch of 1" strips the same width, and glue those over your knee area, right where you knee. If you space them out a little, it won't keep it from flexing.

Very good video and very useful for somebody starting out. A few of suggestions/observations...I have never found any strap-on knee pads that I can tolerate for more than a few minutes. I much prefer builders/construction trousers with the cordura pockets at the knee that take the foam knee pads. In summer if I wish to wear shorts, I carry a foam garden kneeler pad instead. With regards digging tools, I am convinced that the teeth are a waste of time and just get caught up on stuff..in the confines of a hole, when trying to cut a root, you really can't get a good sawing motion going anyway. If you dig in or around woods, a pair of gardeners hand pruners work far better to cut through roots..I have also seen a person carrying one of those "survival saw chains". Once they hit a really thick root, they cleared a space around it, fed the chain around it, and cut through it in short order.. Finally, the quality of the hori hori knives vary tremendously and many do not have full tang handles meaning they are not as strong as they perhaps look, so no levering. Also many are wickedly sharp ( especially the serrated edge) so I would recommend carrying a small first aid in case of accidents if you use one of these..

I just started detecting. I so far brought a minlab vanquish 340, a g.p pointer ($20 Amazon brand it works alright, a $10 harbor freight shovel and I use my small backpack for finds. I don't have loads of disposable cash and everything I listed make that x2 because my wife goes with me. So Ive spent around $600 so far which to us as a young couple that's about our months rent. I wish they made the sand scoops a bit cheaper because $100+ on one (also have to get 2) is just another setback. We had garden spades that bent in half our first 10 min out. Anyways it's definitely an expensive hobby to get into and get yourself all the right stuff. So far we have had the detectors about a week almost. I've found around $0.50 so far 😂

A question on the cheat sheet... do the numbers differ with different manufacturers? I am getting the Simplex and would like to know what all of the numbers represent - I see that Simplex has a list of numbers and their respective items in their manual (online), but they are very specific items (Silver Roosevelt Dime, Washington Silver Quarter, etc). Is there a listing of what all the numbers represent - or perhaps like on your Minelab card, something that has more basic, general items such as pull-tabs or aluminum crew caps for the Simplex? THANKS!
@TheHistoryDigger1
@TheHistoryDigger1 2 года назад
Yes they are unique to each manufacturer and detector. Some have a scale 0-49 while others 0-99. You can generally find examples of cards similar to mine online. Also remember the numbers may also differ based on ground conditions plus learn the tones as well.

I've got both the simplex and the nox 800 prefer the nox 800 cause the multi frequency combined that with a full Detect Ed carbon fiber shaft and the detect Ed alloy arm cuff, since it makes the whole machine lighter and stronger, plus minelab arm cuff suck and break way to easy, I use the detect Ed finds 2.0 bag too , cause it's basically land and sea , the pulse dive induction pinpointer is the way to go too , if you accidentally leave it behind it will start beeping to let you know that you left it, and it's good to 10 feet and completely waterproof , has a built in light and 10 sensitivity settings and it rechargeable , for my shovel I use a Anaconda nx5 t handle shovel and as for the hand digger I'm using the lesche digger, it's just a bruit lol . I would highly recommend that every one using the nox 800 though to order one of those coil stabilizers that goes over the ears on the coil , minelab missed the mark build the coil ears , Nokta at least makes there's heavy duty
