Another amazing thing about this area- when the rains came several species of beetle would kindly remove any waste i made on the forest floor within a matter of minutes- the largest was about 3/4 of an inch or less and would roll it all away. I never observed this before, even though as a peace corps i was in the gambia much longer. Another, aspect of how forests create such amazing events.
A Gambian pouch rat is abiding there. He was hot too- as once I found him in the morning at the entrance just as though he had passed out from a night of drinking- he didn't even care that I was there- I thought he was dead. I pushed his tail with a stick and he reluctantly, slowly crawled into his cave. Maybe he got stung by a scorpian ..
