Could be a moring chain if there is a river there that has commercial boats or even a personal watercraft or house boat might have been there at one time. Just a guess. If so there is probably a large block of concrete attached to other end

The black object with a round piece over a rectangle is a center hinge from an old carpenters folding ruler. It should be brass and if you pull the ends of the rectangle it should open by rotating around the circle.

the metal object is a hinge from a folding ruler a measuring instrument used by carpenters still used by some today look up folding ruler to see one or an example of one . it will be in imperial measuremeny 1" 2" 3" and so on to a yard or approximate a metre long in length . the wood used inbetween may have rotted by now however it should be made of brass or a softer metal . to try brasso or a brass cleaner on it to give it a golden brass shine again . not sure how you would polish the inside though . it will probably be in pieces with other exact same pieces in the general area . so let us know whats on the end of the chain perhaps a boulder to anchor ships or hold vessels upon their first flotation for balancing . kind regards .

I use old maps to check on what was there before. Usually find them online. Library of Congress, local or state historical society, etc. I don't know where you are at or I would gladly look them up for you. Sanborn Fire maps show building sites and usually names of building sites. Better than breaking you're back digging a potential deep hole. ☺

Nice. Thanks. Good memories I grew up across a red brick street in a small WNY town, from a 7up bottling plant. And on a hot summer day all we had to do was show up to have the plant manager meet us with an ice cold bottle of the uncola. I enjoy a good whiskey and 7 on the rocks to this day...and We never got In the way of those trucks :)
