@@mammothaudioengineering maybe different drummers, bands, their styles? With generic stylistic examples? I like how to mentioned Dave Lombardo and literally played something that sounded like Dave Lombardo. XD That's cool you're able to pick up those subtleties.

If you're struggling with writing your own drums because you've never done it - look no further, I got you covered! Keep in mind: These are just the basics. I will probably make a more in depth video sometime down the line covering velocities, quantizing, accents and drumfills. I remember giving my bandmate like 7 arms regularly during our early years. Sorry for that, bro. I learned! How many limbs did your drummer have to grow to play the stuff you programmed?

@@mammothaudioengineering I've been trying to figure out the best way to program drums for metal for awhile now, and so far this video is one of the better ones. Do you ever find yourself tuning the drums? I figure you should but I don't know what I should tune them to. Is there a universal tuning that everyone uses by default like "Standard" for guitar tuning?
@mammothaudioengineering
@mammothaudioengineering 2 года назад
@@astrospect No, there is no standard drum tuning that I am aware of since the sizes and the drum heads largely dictate, where the drum tuning is going to live and you will be kind of forced to tune it to that range. You can go slightly higher and slightly lower than that ideal range, but anything too crazy will kind of choke the drum. However, I am aware of a few producers that like to tune the drum shells to the key of the song, but that isn't all that important to me, I admit. It's a nice thing when that happens to be the case, like, having the toms be the root, fifth, fourth and octave of the key is nice, but I just really want my drums to be in tune with themselves, more than anything.
@astrospect
@astrospect 2 года назад
@@mammothaudioengineering okay cool that's exactly what I need to know. thank you for your input as this is invaluable knowledge for me. It seems I'm gonna have to invest in Superior Drummer because the only stock kit in Studio One that is based on a real drum set absolutely sucks if you ask me.

Thanx man,this was a good lesson. I am not a drummer and all I have is a iPad with garage band. I’m going to program these to see how they sound. In the future could you do another video for drum programming in other genres? Well just a thought, I am a product of the 80’s and just suck at drums. Thank.

Hey, I'm glad that helped you! Yeah, that's a cool request. What genres were you thinking of? More along the lines of 80s rock and pop?
@timothy5974
@timothy5974 3 года назад
@@mammothaudioengineering yes that would be cool. I am new to the iPad so this garage band stuff is slow. I’m use to reaper or Cubase. I think drum patterns are cool but because I read music I am always looking to just program the music in. I own a thr10 as well so looking forward to that video too. Thanks for the kind reply. It means a lot.

Thanks this helped alot! Can i ask, when you first started did you program the drums then write over top of that? or record guitar first then drums?
@mammothaudioengineering
@mammothaudioengineering 3 года назад
It usually was a bit of both. Sometimes i'd have a riff, lay that down, and see what drums could work. Other times, I'd know exactly what works and just lay down the beat and go from there. Nowadays, I take a lot more time programming drums because I tend to go super in depth to get some crazy complicated beats, depending on the song.

@@Ron.Swanson. if your budget allows it and you know how to mix drums, Superior 3.0 is incredible. It's what I use these days for pretty much any style that require "real" sounding drums. If you aren't that experienced, EZDrummer 2 might be better suited for you since.. well, the name really explains it. Think of EZD2 as SD3's little brother. Sounds amazing too with lots of great and easy to use presets.
