It lines up pretty closely with what Tati talked about in a 2018 interview with Psychology Today called "Crushing Concrete with Jinjer's Tatiana Shmaylyuk" though the song was directly based on a poem from when she was a teenager and feels like her mental health struggles had mellowed out in the interim. Also in recent interviews since meeting Alex Lopez she seems more calm and confident so I'm guessing she's made more progress since.

The hi-hat part you're talking about around the 8:00 mark is actually an auxilary hi-hat that is set up beside the bass drum and very low to the ground. He uses it for washes and that kind of stuff a lot, and hence why you don't see him hitting a hat with his sticks during that section. His drum setup and approach are pretty unorthodox in general especially for a metal / rock drummer. Crazy to think the dude hasn't really been playing drums for very long comparative to his talent at doing so

And I just read that he has no formal training on drums. Amazing!! He has a very jazz setup with his kit. Not very usual in rock let alone metal. I hope with the playthroughs I can really check out his set. Thank you, my brother! 🤘🤘

Oh if you have a cat my suggestion is Jinjer's video Judgement and Punishment One Take Vocal Performance. You'll see why. This one is a dark song so she went dark. Imagine being alone in the woods at night and hearing those sounds. Of course the typical Jinjer fan would probably yell out "Tati is that you?" just before getting eaten by a ten foot skinwalker because of course it isn't her.

Well, when Tatiana (the main lyricist of the band) had to create the lyrics for this track she can't choose the theme. So she dove into her old notes and found an essay or story she had written years ago. She has a diploma in literature, you know, so she's kinda used to make some notes, essays etc. All we know about it that was a story about the mind issues. Then Tatiana recreated it as a lyrics for this song. Try another great song from the same show called "On The Top". It much more impressive live (particulary at this concert) than OMV.

There's just nothing not to love about this band. I agree with your comparison of Vlad with Neil Peart and Danny Carey. You can see in this video that Jinjer is up there with Rush and Tool for live performances. You should definitely check out the playthrough videos. They're insane.

@@BemusingBill there's one reactor who's a musician and he does double reactions of studio and live Jinjer songs. The live version is often better than the studio version with Jinjer, although their OMVs are also works of art. I'm not sure I've seen any/many doubletake reactions featuring Jinjer playthroughs. A few drummers have done reactions to Vlad's playthroughs. Not many/any for Eugene or Roman. I think the brilliance and complexity of Eugene's and Roman's parts can be obscured by the overall sound, and by the shock and awe of Tatiana. The playthroughs let you really hone in on what the guys are doing. It's pretty intense, and sometimes surprising. If you try learning some Jinjer songs on guitar, it's very challenging. Unconventional phrasings, tricky riffs, but maybe most of all the intricacy of variations and composition. Maybe I Speak Astronomy would be a good place to start. There's also a cool guitar cover video of "Top 10 riffs of Jinjer" that's pretty sick. Roman's right hand work is pretty remarkable.

Hi. Jinjer is something special. In a lot of band when you've got 2 or more top talented people, they "fight" one vs the other to get the most shine. In Jinjer all 4 are among the best, and they work ( from writing to execution) to let every one take the part of the shine he/she diserve. They've gone trough a lot of shit during their carrer so it's maybe the secret. (sry if my English is not perfect, not native tongue :) )
@BemusingBill
@BemusingBill 5 месяцев назад
Your English is better than mine, my friend. Like a jazz quartet, they all need to be at the same level to freely express themselves. That makes a great band and great songs. If you work with people that are below your level of ability you must drop to their level which is not very rewarding. going through shit together makes their bonds of friendship stronger. Makes them a family. Thank you, my friend!

7:55 Yeah, Vlad _loves_ the sound of a steady hi-hat tick amid the chaos... so much so that in order to get it super-crisp, even live, he has a second hi-hat, way down low near the floor to the left of the bass drum, so its dedicated mic can be as far away from the rest of the kit as possible for pretty good isolation.

What makes Vlad so impressive is that he really doesn't have a big kit but yet can make so much sound coming from it. No rack toms, doubles several cymbals, and has a cabled open high hat in front of the kit, along with his standing high hit that i believe is almost always closed. Eugene is a beast. One of the top bassists in today's music imo. Roman just sets the mood perfectly for Tatiana to fill it all out with her incredible vocalization.

Ya know, I really couldn't tell how many drums he was using because of the camera angle and all the cymbols. I thought he had them mounted very low over the bass but going back and trying to watch and pause see you are right. Impressive! they all are just fantastic musicians and Tati, a force of nature! We have the same, favorite moment.....those dry, Zildjian K Hi-Hats chicking away during the half-time section in the middle of the song. Vlad is such a tasty drummer. This might be my favorite Jinjer song. As always, the entire band kills it, but Roman really shines through here. This song has multiple guitar riffs that are killer...many a band would base a song around just one of them. Not for review, but the guitar playthrough for Pit of Consciousness is a good watch when you have time: Jinjer - Pit of Consciousness (Guitar Playthrough) Before moving on to review other videos, consider wrapping up the Live In Kiev part of your Jinjer journey with another banger from that show: JINJER - On The Top (LIve In Kiev) | Napalm Records The band has mentioned they didn't release a full set from Kiev because they were unhappy with the lighting. There is a drum cam video of Vlad playing Ape from this concert and it looked like he was having repeated issued with his IEMs....adjusting them repeatedly. Tatiana is an amazing frontman with a fantastic voice, but she's also a poet when her lyrics are at their best. Songs like this one and Perennial in particular have great lyrics. She and the entire band are the complete package. If you get a chance, go see them live. They are the real deal....saw them in a small room (400 to 500 people) and it was excellent. Band is so tight and Tati just owns the room. Finally, excellent shirt. Up The Irons!

Ohhh, nice. Since you grew up with Drum & Bugle Corps... have you heard Polyphia yet? Their drummer, Clay Aeschliman, got his start in that world. He paused for a while to have a "normal" career, but hated it and went back to music. You can really hear his rudimentary chops in his playing style. If you check them out, probably start with "Playing God" or maybe "G.O.A.T." For genre, they're a fusion of mathcore and hip-hop, and no, you probably can't imagine that without hearing it, so check 'em out if you haven't! xD Vlad here was a conservatory-trained classical pianist who learned guitar to gig with a friend's band. The drummer of that band quit, and Vlad decided to learn how to drum to take his place, because y'know, virtuosos can do that kind of thing (I did it in marching band when, one week before the first football game, I decided to switch from trombone to tuba. The director laughed and said, "I'll tell you what, if you can take a sousaphone home over the weekend, and come in Monday and play all the songs for that game perfectly, from memory, you can switch." So I did.) Anyway, yeah, so Vlad self-taught drums and you can hear his musicality clearly in his style. You can also hear his progression from his earliest stuff with Jinjer (the Pisces live studio session was recorded specifically to showcase his new ideas for that song, which is radically different from the album version) to their latest stuff. He also brought a lot of compositional prowess to the band. The previous drummer, Dmitriy Kim, is a very talented session drummer, who joined the band temporarily when the previous-previous drummer was paralyzed by a fall out of a second story window in their flight from Donetsk to Kyiv when Russia first invaded in 2013. Kim just didn't like the touring musician life, but he departed amicably and is still heavily involved in the band. He does a lot of production for them and even co-starred in a music video with them, for the song "Disclosure!" from their latest album. (You can also see him drumming in the OMVs for "I Speak Astronomy" and "Sit, Stay, Roll Over") We should be getting a new Jinjer album dropping this year if I'm not mistaken. Can't wait!
