If you don't mind breaking out the sandpaper to reshape the LCD cutout, other kits can be made to fit. No Funnyplaying laminated kits will fit without at least machining a chamfer into the inner cutout on the shell itself though the custom made 2.5d funnyplaying laminated kits from MRGC should fit (though are discontinued). If I am reading the website correctly, would I still need to purchase a kit for the laminated screen separately to use this mod? I was confused since the website says it comes with a CGS Game Boy Advance laminated kit but i assume it does not include the pcb needed to connect to the GBA motherboard?

I may have made that more confusing than necessary. The housing, when purchased from RGRS, includes the laminated screen assembly and the rest of the kit required to hook up the screen to the GBA. Aside from a donor GBA with a working motherboard, the housing includes all the accessories needed to assemble the console (except buttons, batteries, and membranes but you can re-use all your existing parts for that).

Hi makho and viewers, I had a quick question. Three years ago Makho posted a “quick rant about gba SP batteries” and I was wondering if anyone knew which battery the gold wrapped one is and where to get one. I have a clear case build that I think it would look a lot better in vs the standard boring blue. Thanks!

Hey, just a quick question about the touch sensor, In the video it looks like you used one from a separate project. Can we just solder wire to the sensor you ripped off of the flex instead?

I don't know what specific screen that is because these sellers so frequently just up the number on the same product and call it new. Probably not compatible without modification like I mentioned in the video.

Probably. There are very few kits that don't work with that board given that it still uses a GBA SoC. The only screen that I know that doesn't work properly, besides OEM, are the AGS-101 LCDs.

That metal shell is almost perfect the only thing I am not a fan of is having a magnetic battery cover.

Probably don't charge and play simultaneously and probably try to not let it drain fully (e.g. just top it off after every session or two) and it's probably fine. Depends on the specific one you went with.

Included with the shell if purchased from RGRS (also includes the "stock" brackets). I'm not posting the files publicly for this one. I feel for you if you have one of the older variants but these cloners already take so much without giving back and I don't want to make it too easy for them, especially for free. White parts are the "stock" brackets, clear ones are mine.

Does anyone make an aluminum or bronze power switch? I did the boxy pixel aluminum shell with brass buttons and now my plastic power switch feels cheap.

The latching of the slider is handled by the plastic switch deforming over a bump. Metal wouldn't work too well as is and it would need to be re-engineered if you want to keep the detent. I've done a proof of concept with magnets and it works fine but it's kinda complicated and not really feasible to scale.

@@makho ah, that makes sense.. though a bit of a bummer. I wonder if there's a way to do a metal switch with a small metal or plastic spring attached to that? I suppose I'll answer my own question when I go inspect the switch more closely with this in mind 😆

The mirror clear IPS ready shells from funnyplaying were my favorite iteration. The ITA compatible shells are a close second (but I liked that the IPS ready ones were 100% drop in). My preferred *currently available* shell is going to be the cloud game store offerings. I like the finish, the fit is as good as the FP shells, and the lettering is razor sharp.

It wouldn't be a mod without having to do some mods... on a kit you're likely spending a lot of money on.. lol I've found the L and R buttons are hit/miss these days with newer shells. I'm going to have to buy they together from the same seller in hopes to make sure they don't bind up.

When possible, I recommend sticking with the same vendor for this kind of stuff for exactly that reason. All the buttons should work with all the shells but clearly some pairings work better than others.

So I’m trying to use the select and bumper method of screen brightness control in my mod. Does this screen/board support that by chance? So I seem to have found an answer. It seems the CGS doesn’t have the ability to be soldered to the select bumper brightness control. By chance would any other version work with this shell? I’d prefer to use the 5.0 as I like its features pretty well and a lot of people seem to agree it’s the best.

The blue case you have is from me, but the silver one you have now is a piece of junk from a businessman who copied my idea. He copied my model, but he lost my soul to make him. I have now updated the design of this case once again to make it more popular among the enthusiasts.

His gba mini, RGB10Max, CM4, and other products are all designed and manufactured from me, but since March 2022, eddietay has been unable to contact, and there are arrears with me. No you don't have to use a laminated kit but the shell is designed with one in mind. You'll need a different bracket than what comes with otherwise. This is a different option.
