Wait it's not a re-port but emulator? Horrible, since MGS1 HAS a PC version, though that has broken sound (fixable with fan patches) and lack of modern screen/controller options (many ways to fix latter but would love a port where Stealth doesn't lower the framerate to slideshow).

I don't think it looks blurry enough for it to be bilinear filtering. I could be wrong of course but that shit is a real mess and the textures still look pretty crispy here.

Especially when the content of the game is divided based on discs, I think it's really cool when that's preserved. It's also a thing in games like Final Fantasy VIII Remastered where you're traveling through the overworld, and while it doesn't remind you to switch discs if you go back to different regions that haven't changed it _will_ tell you when you've cleared the story content of a disc on a brief intermission screen just as the original did. Those disc split points dramatically changed the structure of games to accommodate them so there's really no way to ever fully remove their influence on the original title.

especially if Vol 2 has MGS4. there's a codec joke with Otacon about switching discs on Shadow Moses. Wouldn't make sense to those who haven't played the games before if that wasn't there.

The skateboarding game was actually a demo for Evolution Skateboarding. A game Konami made that featured Snake, Raiden, and even a vampire hunter from Castlevania as bonus unlockable characters with Big Shell and Dracula’s castle as levels.

Hmmm, to be honest, I doubt anyone is gonna miss that skateboarding mini game in mgs2, or snake vs monkey which was a reference to Ape escape.

I agree. It's nostalgic for old players but also let's new players know that this was what people had to do back in the day. Maybe if they added an option to skip it that would be a good compromise I guess.

Yeah, I find the animation cute; not to mention that they poke fun at the disc swap in MGS4, so if it were left out of the collection it may've posed a small issue if 4 gets remastered.

Another thing I push back on is the pressure sensitive buttons. I know some like them but you guys have won this war long enough I find them very difficult, often inconsistent, quite exhausting to use for prolonged periods of time, and its way to heavily dependent on the quality of your controller, something a simple button to aim would solve for all of those problems that was generated by it being pressure sensitive. I like a button that can just be used to aim so Ill agree to an option to enable it but I will not agree to it being the set standard.

No. I think it's a cool feature of the PS5 controller, but I also don't find the PS5 controller to be the most comfortable.

yeah he clearly never played forza on xbox lol, 100% has pressure sensitive triggers. The real difference is the pressure sensitive BUTTONS from the ps2/ps3 controllers not being present on modern controllers, so konami had to do some workarounds@@Geebees93

PAL versions are those most patched up versions outside of Integral. Also not censored. Johnny's underwear or a blur filter. Pick your poison. I do believe you can still pick different region versions still though.

You can choose between PAL and NTSC version of the game, but also choose NTSC with Different Languages (Like Spanish)

PAL versions of PSX games run at 25FPS versus 30FPS on NTSC. Sounds like a minor difference but you can feel it if you have gamed for decades.

And the most important fact : - The original HD collection work flawlessly in RPCS3.

Not really going to be hard to get rid of the Ipod, just change the texture on the in game item, change the UI to say MP3 player and change the icon for it so it doesn't resemble an ipod. Could probably only take a week of work to get that done. What will be the legal issue with apple is if they had some sort of X amount of years licensing agreement. As for sony though, there is too much integrated in the game to easily rip out, let alone the actual PS3 architecture/cell processor defining how they could get it to run on modern systems. Not like sony would allow konami to have a integrated PS3 OS emulator that can be sold on nintendo and xbox consoles...PC too! They are not that stupid. Not also do you have many references to PS3 like its disc drive and a PS3 in game but snake controls the mk2 with a PS3 controller, possibly the mk2 has an aibo sony reference to it as well as it looks similar and entire mechanics revolve around the six axis. Six axis might not be too much of an issue to get around on a technical level as gyro are innately inside switch, PS5 and Possibly xbox controllers???? but there are entire dialogues on how to do things in game that references the six axis. They would have to cut these, or redub from the original VAs. I doubt konami has the will to do it, too costly. Only logical way would be to remake it from ground up on a new engine but octocamo is probably too complicated to port to say UE5 by any random team. Only skilled devs like kojimas team could do something like that. Then you will have loads of licensing for the songs and other things like food products that will need to legally be allowed or cut. Lots of legal and tech work needed to get MGS4 off of the PS3. The more fun is waiting to see how they mess it up, what they have to cut and what they attempt to do with it, I mean specifically that game. This vol 1 collection is simply emulated with certain things cut for licensing.

People forget that if you bought the MGS legacy collection the code for MGS1 is already expired since it only lasts for 10 years (2011-2021) also MGS1 doesn’t have trophies on PS3 but they do now on PS5! - also performance of 2 & 3 on PS3 dips pretty regularly down to like 30 fps at times during heavy scenes. On PS5 it’s pretty much lock 60. My only gripe with the master collection is that MGS1 is a bit blurry since it uses bilinear filter instead of integer and MGS 2 & 3 having worse texture than the PS3 version (most likely due to a bug) but those literally the ONLY negative of this collection, I dunno why people are blowing this out of proportion like it’s the worst release since GTA trilogy smh

@@AusOpening The changes present in this new release aren't being exaggerated in any way. The control scheme was changed, and not necessarily for the better, influencing how you interact with the in-game environment. An improved framerate is secondary to the fact that there are now *graphical* *tradeoffs* to consider when comparing these games to the originals. Hopefully this can all be patched, but, as is, it's a deterrent. I don't think many serious MGS fans are concerned about a 10 year old voucher or trophies.

If it doesn't include Twin Snakes.

Definitely hope for a port of the ACID games even if they are super easy to emulate since it would give more people the chance to try them.

Imagine being so stupid as to buying a crappy, half-assed collection, when BeetlePSX HW and PCSX 2 are doing a way, way, way better job in emulating and drastically enhancing the original versions in every way imaginable. Oh well, Konami thrives on suckers like that.

@@monkaWGiga The ACID games still top the list of my favourite franchise spin offs to date. I get why people were turned off by the idea of them, but they did incredible job working a turned based deck builder into the MGS formula. Extremely underrated titles.

As long as Volume 2 includes PO, MGS4, and PW, we'll be fine. It needs to have at least those three.

You can already do that via emulation. You need a pretty strong pc but you boot up citra in Bigscreen and change a setting in the emulator I don't remember the name of but it's pretty straight forward something to do with the 3d setting. Then you can play it in 3d in a big ass theater. I actually tested some games it was awesome.@@GangsterFrankensteinComputer

Unless you really LOVE MGS4, don't platinum it because it'll ruin MGS4. It usually takes about 7 to 8 playthroughs to get all the emblems and if you play it over and over again, it gets tiresome. However, going after the Big Boss emblem is a lot of fun.

I went out of my way and copped the PS2 collection of MGS2 and 3 since that collection had the subsistence versions, meaning 2 had the skating mode and 3 had the secret theatre. Really is disappointing when devs do the bare minimum for preserving their best IPs.

MGS released with only 1 language option localised to you’re country even here in europe. So thats likely not the reason. More likely its that the original PAL releases contain additional content and a lot (a shocking amount) of bug fixes compared to the NTSC version.

As someone who's never played MGS before but is very interested in video game voice acting etc, what's the real difference between the US and the UK language in the game? Just spellings in the subtitles or actually different actors/lines?

@@kellalizard theres no difference in the spoken dialogue, same script, same lines. only change is from 60hz to 50hz since at the time of release UK/Europe tv's ran at 50hz so games ran 14% slower

More than difficult, it's impossible to emulate analogue pressure sensitive buttons with digital ones. The console has no way of telling how hard you're pressing them.

Actually the rear trigger buttons are pressure sensitive, but annoyingly you can remap the face buttons to them on Xbox.

MGS was always like this. Every single entry. It always starts off somewhat realistic, and at a certain point (usually 2-3 hours into the game) it starts to get weird, and by the end you have huge robots fighting each other. What sold me as a kid back then, is how they sell you everything that is happening as legit, and make it look legit.

Getting the GOG version of MGS2 to work on the Steam Deck was impossible as far as I can tell so I'm super hopeful that these Steam version will alleviate all that.

@@rentezfarcomarco5102 There are already mods for the existing 20 year old MGS1 and MGS2 PC ports allowing them to run at any resolution and use modern controllers etc. No modding tools existed for those ports either, yet the mods exist. Modders will likely find a way to increase the internal resolution of the PC versions beyond 720p, and hopefully increase the output resolution beyond 1080p too.

I actually like having a real PC port of MGS1, with VR missions on separate .exe and all, it's on GOG and not running through a PS1 emulator.

4 is the only one I'm waiting for (because it's too taxing to emulate it) and I'm still not convinced that they will release it.

I got mgs4 to work perfectly on rcps3. Just took quite a bit of tweaking.

@@kyotra I was literally playing MGS4 on RPCS3 about two hours ago. It's playable at a decent framerate now, although finnicky to set up. Konami will definitely not ever make a proper port, though.

PS3 emulation is making strides already, there's no way emulating it is going to be "out of the question" when done in any first-party or officially affiliated capacity. I'd still like a full-on port more but we'll have to see.

You missed the image quality, it's much worse than PS1. It was supposed to look at least as good as PS1, but it didn't. That is really bad.

Yeah it's insane that in many ways they're still far more advanced than modern games, the enemy AI and the amount of ways you can mess with it is just far far better than the vast majority of AAA games. Snake Eater of course being the best. Being able to destroy or poison food supplies to make guards weaker in the surrounding areas is incredible.

One of the only games out there where enemy AI gets bricked up when they happen to come across an adult magazine.

After all bunch of testing best way to play OG MGS it is on HDMI PS2 or ye Duckstation (with proper setting display) if you don't have original hardware.

DuckStation is such an incredible emulator, cannot recommend it enough for PS1 emulation and enhancing PS1 games.

Duckstation is really good, I switched over from using epsxe recently and it's so much better

How does MGS1 look on the big screen? People say it looks blurry due to it’s upscaling but I remember playing the original non scaled 240p version on PS3 and it was a complete pixelated mess on my TV

How was it? I remember when i first played MGS2 back then. Remember the game came out in 2001. The graphics in this game were INSANE back then. I couldnt believe my eyes, and the 1st person aiming in a 3rd person game was actually extremely insane aswell. The cutscenes with the motion tracking, everything felt like the future. THESE games were truly next gen games, unlike the laughing stock of launch titles on the PS4 back then, like Ghosts or BF4 which looked only slightly better than on PS3

The Codec delay was fixed, actually.

as for the blurry look, they might be upscaling it from it's original resolution using a bicubic or bi-linear filter - while the PS1version obviously didn't. They might be using this upscale as a way to make up for them just emulating the original, and as such not being able to render at an actually higher resolution

It is not really they run at different speeds, its more of an optical thing, the screen is refreshing frames at a slower rate on 50hz, even if the game is playing at 30fps on both, its why high level PC monitors with high refresh rates look better for games than TVs, and visa versa for movies (films). Visually it will look smoother but in reality the speeds the game is playing is the same. This is only an issue for people who played the game at 60hz back in the day. They wont be used to the 50htz refresh rate. Keep in mind even on a 8k TV this is a PS1 game playing at 50hz so it will look even more sluggish than it did on CRT TVs Still if you complain about petty stuff like this for 20 year old games its stupid. If it was a 2023 game playing in 50hz I would understand but all it is doing is emulating the OG 50hz game. i would assume it was more feasibly viably to rip the NTSC audio files over the PAL game than the other way around. Also to add, NTSC IS the inferior version. That is the one that has censorship, in 1 or the other locations it is censored. the European PAL will be the better version out of all to emulate as no censorship. Like MGS2 (and 3?) never got EE so the European version is always the better version. They got EE in the re-releases. I still see Americans cry about the difficulty of MGS2 EE to this day while I was playing it as a teenager, no kills no death, no rations under 3 hours. They even nerfed the torture sequences in the HD remake because of american tears of the difficulty on EE that was included with substance.

@@minerkey682have you got a chance to play MGS1 on PS5? How’s the image quality - I remember playing it on PS3 it was so pixelated it hurt my eyes - not sure if there was any scaling involved

Tying physics to framerate is peak laziness from developers.

@offspringfan89 its more not-knowing than laziness. It's a mistake many devs make early on - I certainly did

I own them too. Now I have a super PC, I run them emulated. Can't beat that Duel Shock 2 controller though, thankfully adapters are cheap.

I regretted selling my OG copies so much that I just went and rebought them all on Ebay. I love seeing them sit on my desk, makes me feel like a kid again.

@@GangsterFrankensteinComputer DS3 is basically the same and works with any Bluetooth dongle, saying this for people who don't have PS2 controllers or an adapter nearby.

Exactly especially if you have a CRT to play on, trying to emulate standard definition games on a modern display makes them look so much worse

@@fightaman7 Yep, still have my childhood Magnavox. Play all my OG Xbox and PS1/PS2 games on it. Simply can’t get any better

Do yourself a favor and start with sons of liberty

playing these games for first time is crazy especially if u like single player campaign games, dont search up for spoilers just immerse yourself
