It risks the gold passivating some of the silver so that it is trapped in the gold during the nitric acid digestion. 2) If the silver is obtained from jewelry, much of it contains solders, which reduces the calculated silver content. 3) The manufacturer is allowed some tolerance on the silver fineness. The manufacturer will use the least amount of silver necessary to meet the minimum fineness requirement - thus minimizing the cost. 4) The excess silver is recovered later and requires no additional chemicals when using the electrolytic silver recovery method.
