I love how you, as a musician, can truly appreciate and marvel at their pure talent. And we Pentaholics are all pretty much convinced they are all aliens from some crazy music planet we don't know about.
John, you are amazing…you ask and answer questions about their performances that I’ve always wondered about…some of them not even fully formed in my mind😂 The one thing that seems to be a recurring theme in your PTX reactions is that they are freaking awesome or maybe just freaks ( in the way Eienstein or Mohammed Ali were freaks)….
I enjoyed your reaction to this Pentatonix video. This performance was done for a young man through Make A Wish Foundation. Pentatonix fulfills a lot of wishes for Make A Wish Kids. They never take it for granted that those seriously ill kids and their families use their wishes to meet Pentatonix and to interact with them.
I love that you fanboy over Kevin pretty much every video. Two things I say often about Kevin: 1) he has an entire drum set in his mouth and 2) he has more talent in his pinky finger than pretty much anyone else has in their entire bodies. I am also really liking you doing the studio version and then a live version. And I'm going to second a few other comments and say that if you want to see some breath control, you gotta to do Carol of the Bells aka "Mitch, breathe!"
Avi + Kevin and Matt + Kevin are definitely the foundation of their magic. The Trio are truly amazing vocalists but adding the percussion/ beat / bass takes it to another level. You’re going to enjoy watching Kevin & Matt go off in concert, ENJOY! 🔥🔥🔥 🔥🔥
Kevin might be an advanced human from the future sent back to show us our potential. Or Kevin could be the DaVinci of our time. Kevin is such a true genius and a musical genius. He has so many talents in him I can't believe he hasn't self-combusted. Can play multiple instruments, sing, beatbox, write, compose, speaks multiple languages, perfect pitch, as if that wasn't enough, he was pre-med at Yale. He is also a humble and wonderful human. Maybe when he is done making music, he can cure cancer and broker world peace.
I hope you watch PopSpring 2016, which is live on stage with perfect mic balance. It’s 4 songs 3 of which are originals. I had a blast last Thursday at their concert. My husband was blown away.
Most of what was missing in this performance was the volume in which each member voice had, like Avi for example it’s hard to voice his deep voice loudly over maybe a high note Mitch hits but it’s amazing that from the production one to this one all basic sounds are coming from pentatonix, great reaction 👍
I agree with all that, just to add: 1. It takes a lot more power to amplify the bass frequencies plus I don't think the (cell phone?) mic used to record this is designed to pick up most of the tones Avi is producing. 2. A lot of Kevin's percussive sounds rely on the explosive "P" sounds where the air hitting the microphone make the beat. 3. There is something called "proximity effect," where the closer you are to the microphone, the more the lows are emphasized. Avi and Kevin are masters of using this. So this vid really shows off their talent, but takes away some of Avi and Kevin's best tools by not having them right in front of a microphone. On this plus side, I LOVE to have skeptics watch this to show them that, yes, they can really do it without a bunch of electronic gear.
You also have to consider: this was a private performance before a concert. They were likely holding back vocally since this was before the real show even started.
What is astounding is I believe that PTX performed this for a Make a Wish Foundation request. How cool is that. It looks like they were in a hospital room and I bet it made dozens of sick children's day! Not to mention that it seems Pentatonix was having a good time performing as well. Awesome! BTW: I do plan to become a Patreon member next week!
You definitely have to check out “love again” and then the live version of that! I like how you’re doing the studio and then live. Another good one to do that for is Aha! Their Imogen heap cover. The live version from Singapore is 🤯
I was just scrolling down to make the same suggestion for Love Again! the live version they did in some random green room during an interview was amazing.
Yes, I really really want to see you mindblown by not only their talent but also the writing in Love Again. As you've noticed, the group has some specific strengths, like Kevin's ability to beatbox his face off, and Mitch's vocal range. When they write songs, they take advantage of these-- Love Again and Coffee in Bed both have amazing, high as hell hooks that are catchy and uniquely PTX, in my opinion. PLEASE, John, watch Love Again! I fully admit I've checked your channel multiple times over the last few days hoping for your next PTX vid, and this did not disappoint!!
If you want to see amazing breath control check out Carol of the bells. Have absolutely no idea how or where Mitch breathes in this song. Maybe you can tell.
Whenever someone sees the official video for this, they assume that the "electronic effects" (scratches, skips, wavers) are added in post production and I guide them to this video to show that, no, this is the way they sing it.
One of my favorite winter songs is White Winter Hymnal. It's amazing in their harmonies (as usual) but also shows how incredibly in sync they are. Since you enjoy doing live versions along with the official video, I just saw a live version of them doing that in their Oakland Arena concert last week they're just as amazingly in sync as the official video even though it was done with Avi and this one is with Matt.
@@Gwennedd Probably no one really even noticed. I have to say that in this setting I was concentrating mostly on Kevin, since he is closest to the camera and in the official video you don't really get to see him much throughout the song. Next time I watch it I'll focus more on Matt. I did notice that they changed the pattern at the end from the original video, but it was still just as effective.
If you want to be truly blown away by Kevin's physical endurance, watch any of their "Evolution of..." videos. I keep expecting his jaw to just fall off!
They are amazing 😍 you have like a baby toe dipped in this pool. You will love love them live! Want to feel so much more love for them individually? Kevin has his own RU-vid, Cello and beatboxing🤯. Avi is killing his solo work(react to Change on the Rise!) and Superfruit is so fun!!! Especially the videos of Mitch and Scott with microphones just singing. Have so much fun at the concert!
Love again is my favorite live performances not even on stage but with only the Kevin having a microphone makes it easier to hear him. It’s amazing. It’s amazing how talented they are when love can sound just like it better than the produced version.
This just goes to prove how incredible they are…not created in a studio. I am so jealous of whoever was in that room. I hope you have a great time at their concert. You should check out Radioactive and Royals!😊
Another vote for Love Again, an original. My fave performance of that is Popspring concern. It's live but recorded professionally instead on on someone's phone so the sound quality is more even. They perform 4 songs, 3 of which are originals and one is one of their Evolution songs (Michael Jackson) which are all freakin' amazing because you'll be amazed at many songs they cram into the mix and the impeccable transitions between songs. I've subbed to see more.
Avi, the bass in this video, left in 2017. Matt joined the band as the new bass. He has a different sound, but really blends well with the band. If you haven’t already seen some videos with him, you should try before the concert. Maybe some Christmas music since it is a Christmas concert.
They have all released music on their own. Kevin did True Colors, plus some amazing stuff he has released on his own channel. Avi has gone on to release some very soulful pieces, Scott and Mitch released two EPs under the name they used for their own RU-vid channel, Super Fruit. Kirstie has done Broadway, and released some of her own music. Her stuff is sexy, sensual, and full of emotion. This is a huge Rabbit Hole you have stumbled into. Enjoy
I've been following PTX for nearly 3 years, and I have seen videos of them doing songs in the street, and in what appears to be a coffee shop, and in other locales where it just looks like they decide to sing at the drop of a hat, and every time they are just incredible. And they performed live in pretty small venues early on and those are worth a look as well. I love your enthusiasm as you proceed through this journey of discovery and eagerly await more reactions.
I just saw them Saturday night (November 19th). It was the 2nd show of this tour and they were amazing as always. So by the time you see them in December they are going to be even better!
You should watch their Unseen Private Performance of Take Me Home, which was filmed on a phone also, but is much better because the person stood near Avi. Also, their Tik Tok compilation of them singing in staircases, etc….impressive
what i find absolutely amazing (besides pentatonix) is how you went from the first react video of theirs to now. Each new video of theirs you react to, your smile gets bigger and bigger. You went from slightly skeptical to an absolute fan and I find that to be beautiful. I love it when different styles and genres of music can be open minded to something very different from what they do and just embrace it. Music is a universal art and I appreciate you. By far the best reaction you tuber I have seen. Keep Rockin
You are really going to enjoy the concert! I was at their concert on the 21st in Denver. FANTASTIC! And, they are going to donate some of the proceeds from the concert to the families of the victims on the shooting in Colorado Springs (which is my home town). Amazing and talented group of people.
You are going to have an amazing time at the concert. I’ve seen them live and, just like you, my mind was trying to comprehend the awesomeness. It’s not only the music, though. I’m sure when you see their chemistry with the audience and each other, your going to have a whole different view of how amazing, not just as artists, but as humans this group really is. Enjoy, be safe and we can’t wait to hear all about it.!😊🎤🎼
Got to see them live in Dallas last week, you're in for an absolute treat at the concert next week! Can't wait for your reaction to Matt, he's an amazing singer. And Kevin's section? Oh man if you're in love with his beatboxing, just wait until you see him CELLOBOX.
I told u..you would love this one..I cant wait more reactions from u on pentatonix next one aha i sent that to you on Instagram.. You are going to have fun at the concert.
Please react to their Christmas music because that's basically the concert. Any song you want, you literally can't go wrong with Pentatonix. Great reactions, keep up the good work!!
I love that you did this and that you shared your understanding of the challenges of vocal performance. It's really satisfying when a musician gets it. I also love that there is like a bathroom in the background of this video. I saw their Christmas concert last year, my first time seeing them live, and it was AMAZING. They're so incredible live. There are a lot of live performance videos from audience members from last year's tour (the Evergreen tour), but maybe it's best to wait until after you see them live in case they repeat some of the songs.
I am so glad that I recommended this performance and was able to see this reaction. Thank you. As for breath control I recommend Carol of the Bells music video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WSUFzC6_fp8.html and live performance from 2018 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-occG1JvLxao.html I tried to find a live performance from Christmas Under The Stars, newer and very good quality, but unfortunately it is no longer on yt.
There's also this very recent live version from Oakland Arena on the 17th of this month: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-n65P_RdZrbQ.html
I was going to recommend the same video that was posted of the Carol of the Bells live concert from Oakland California. It's brilliant! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-n65P_RdZrbQ.html
Going to Avi Kaplan's concert in 10 days!!! Told my kiddo I'll give her an early birthday present on the 1st so she has time to freak out & mentally prepare to lose her marbles haha
As a musician and hanging out with a lot of other musicians, I see people in music videos or even live on stage in concert, and sometimes I think "Even without ALL THIS, this guy would be extremely entertaining, just hanging out, sitting in the living room with an acoustic guitar. This other guy . . . I'm not so sure about." I am sure these singers would be AMAZING in any casual setting where they decided to just break out singing.
There are lots of videos of them randomly singing awesomely. There is one where they are singing "Thrift Shop" on an airport terminal intercom system while waiting for their plane. Another is a video of them singing a song that a fellow customer requested in a coffee shop type place.
Always enjoy your commentary regarding the Pentatonix performances. I totally agree with Amanda's comment that you should watch their original video of Love Again, and the live version they did for a TV interview, it will blow your mind! Another good live Christmas performance would be their Silent Night video. Cheers and Merry Christmas John! 😊✌️🎄
Loved your reaction and subbed. What gets me is how they remember all these songs and the arrangements, even years later. I value your input as a musician on this. Also, just a little Pentaholic lore. Scott has been know to forget a word or 3, but it just makes us love him more, I guess. And yes, Kevin is a machine. A beautiful, angelic, machine, with the most amazing laugh ever. Looking forward to watching lots more. Enjoy!
Hello!! New sub here. I am glad that you found Pentatonix. They are amazing and you will not be disappointed. I will not be at the Nashville concert but I will be at the Hollywood Florida concert at the Hard Rock. As you will soon see, Pentatonix is literally Christmas reimagined.
You could also check out their live performances where they are on the sing - off. You can see how they have evolved from when they had come together as a group for this show.
an interesting thing about this song which was done in 2013, Daft Punk the duo was retired(no performances anywhere) since 2001, and Daft Punk came back out to do performances during 2014 till 2018 riding on PTXs Grammy performance. Now that is a powerful thing when a cover brings the original performer out of retirement.
You'd really enjoy any of their "evolution " videos. It's just them sitting there doing their thing... evolution of music, Michael Jackson, Rhianna, Beyonce, and Ariana Grande.... you need to check those out!
I love that you pointed out that it's likely easier to be the lead than the background. Scott have mentioned that, since you have to tune and be so incredibly on point and hold long stretches or do really short sounds in the background. You have way more leway and flexibility to riff around or be a bit off in the lead.
I couldn't keep my eyes off avi it looked like him and Mitch were having the most fun. I haven t really seen Avi have fun like that. Very entertaining.
You would love the 2016 Pop Spring performances they did! All live and most of the songs are their originals. They actually have really well balanced audio cause it's professionally recorded and not a fan cam
