The second highest ranking result in the last youtube poll was "Tamer for a volcano"
So i present to you a metal volcano design for Oxygen Not Included:
The not energy efficient but tames all the metal volcanoes -tamer! (not niobium)
Every Metal volcano (not niobium ;D )! Honestly though this took a lot of work and I hope it helps you.
If you want more efficient tamer you need to build them specifically for each volcano type.
But for now i hope this covers a large range of use cases :)
Outputs the material at 130°C but it is very easy to expand the cooling loop
to the tile the material is dropped on.
Put a tiny drop of naphta on it (for heat transfer reasons)

Thanks that's really cool the way you bypassed the aquatuner input with a bridge to the output so the coolant keeps circulating. Will definitely use that in place the double shut off valve method I've been using.

Love all the how to build videos you got up. I've tied to remake this Volcano Tamer of yours and what I built it ended up a bit different, but still works well. Mostly the power, pipe, and automation layout are the biggest difference. I do use the "Insulated heavy-watt joint plate" mod and placed insulated blocks around the weight plate so the top/bottom halves are completed insulated from each other. Built it and works for all volcanos really well. Niobium was different though. Had to expand it further to the left with a 2nd steam turbine and 2 robo-miners to dig out the blocks it kept making. I don't know how it's gonna work or even power it in a real game and not in a cheat dev/sandbox mode since I've never bothered with Niobium before.

Hi Mille. Small side note: remember that this is only so complicated because it is designed to handle Aluminum, Tungsten etc. So if you specialize to one volcano type you can have it as simple as a single steam turbine and a lot of water for gold for example. See Francis Johns old tamers :)

@@colbyearnhart8955 Which old design are you reffering to? The one for the Magma Volcanoes? Yeah the output material for this is at 130°C. I am testing (in a few days) how good the integrated cooling of the output material works. The reason why i only used one Steam turbine was: because i could. Nothing else. it is the smallest possible setup i could come up with for almost all metal volcanoes. And i like to make everything very compact. If I would have made it bigger i probably would have gone with a passive cooling for the turbines.

I really like your build videos, but it would help me greatly if you let it run and explain it after you showed how to build it. Like: 1. Metal solidifies in hot steam room 2. Autosweeper puts it into dispenser which drops it on a weight plate 3. If there is more than 1000 kg of metal (why did you show 10?) and the Temperature is low enough the top autosweeper throws the metal out. This way understanding your algorythm would be easier not just copying your design.
@Luma_plays
@Luma_plays 2 года назад
Hi DB i am already doing / preparing those. I have an own playlist for the explanaitions and am slowly adding to them. The separation of the build and explanation has to do with audience retention and what counts as a short. The 10kg are intentionally. Not 1000. So if more than 10kg of metal and the right temperature of less than 130°C for more than x seconds then activate sweeper for y seconds. why 10? because more than 0 and less than 300. Most gold or tungsten or cobald volcanoes can profit from that. for aluminum and so on it doesn't matter since they only cool down enough in their dormancy to even spit the material out. and then 15t at once. So this is the stuff you can expect from the explanation video :) The video was planned for this week but since the game will be coming out of early acces in a day or so, i might do something for super beginners. I also added cooling for the output metal by adding a few pipe pieces. tested it for 1-2 active periods plus dormancy periods (150 cycles) and made sure it is very safe.

@simonfalkner1682
@simonfalkner1682 2 года назад
For cooling liquids you could just run them directly through an aquatuner (repeatedly iff neccesary). With shutoffs and pipe thermal sensors you can then eject the water, once it is the right temperature. Or you could run a cooling loop through a body of water and only activate the pump, once the temperature is low enough. For salt water geysirs you could first desalinate by dumping the 95 °C salt water in the steam room and then extracting the 95 °C water from the steam turbines and cool that water by using the same methods mentioned before.

Thanks for the comment :D. I intend to do every geyser or vent over the long run. What exactly do you mean with "hot" water from geysers? Polluted water vent 30°C Salt water geyser 95°C Water Geyser 95°C Steam vent 110°C Hot steam vent 500°C ? The rest with water has negative temperatures. I do plan on making a video on each. A quick question. On these type of designs, or any other that call for a specific ammount of water (200kg, 400, 800, 1, 2, etc) how do you measure/deliver it with?
@Luma_plays
@Luma_plays 2 года назад
Hey Kutai Raisu. If it is a multiple of 200kg just send the dupes to collect it from a pitcher pump. A bottle emptier can only hold 200kg so if you let 1 bottle flow through that you get exactly 200kg. repeat until you get the correct mass. If it is a smaller amount i normally eyeball it if if i work in a broader mass-range or a range where i am comfortable pressing stopp at the right time. Meaning: i let the dupes deliver the bottle and then shortly before the right amount is dropped i press deactivate (the current liquid). If i need a super exact amount like with the liquid duplication (60g) then i use the liquid meter valves. In cases where the liquid is a multiple of 10kg you can fill up pipes and deconstruct them. For anything else use a pipe plus valve plus vent with a switch. that should do the trick. Most of the time i just eyeball it though. But I also know when it is important to be exact and when not. So if in doubt be correct or ask again :D Sometimes people switched the liquid amounts and then were wondering why it didn't work anymore. Also: good question you proposed. Maybe i need to make a video about that topic :)

Question, you mention only putting a specific amount of liquid down via a bottle emptyer, how do you control how much liquid is to be emptied on the spot?
@Luma_plays
@Luma_plays 2 года назад
Depends on how lazy I am at that moment. Either I wait for the bottle emptier to have a bottle delivered and the I play the start stop game.Bottle arrives stop the game. Start. Let a tiny amount drop. Stop. Easy Method but you need materials for it. Use the new liquid meter. Make a small pool place a pump in it connected with a pipe to a liquid meter and that with a pipe and a liquid chute to the place you want it dropped.. Set the amount you want in the meter. Press reset. done. Perfect amount. Old school liquid meter: same thing but you need to use liquid valves and loops. Mostly I just press start and stop :)

Can't I just pour water on the metal volcanos and let it steam and turn back to water? They might just patch this and make water and lava mix like in real life.
@Luma_plays
@Luma_plays 2 года назад
Check out the First few seconds of the Explainer video for this build in the description. You can basically tame all volcanoes by just placing steam turbines on top. if you want it this small it gets complicated. But the bigger the easier. If you want to NOT cool your steam turbines you will need to keep your steam inside the volcano tamer under 135°C at all time. so alot of water as heat buffer amd many Steam turbine that are cooled by their output water running trough a radiant pipe along the floor (not inside) and best dump some liquid on it to help transfer the temperatures.

@Luma_plays
@Luma_plays Год назад
I am not sure. I specifically tested this with extrem ranges so the tempshiftplates high thermal conductivity helps this work on a wider ranges of volcanoes. You can try any other tempshiftplate with a high thermal conductivity. You can use Cobalt, Diamond or any metal but those are already only half as effective. Thermium is the Best but well who got that at that point in the game.

I think some pipes melted in the tungsten volcano eruption at 1:00 :-)
@Luma_plays
@Luma_plays 2 года назад
Check the text at that time. :D It is an intended breaking point. The pipes help and stay if it is for example an aluminum volcano or iron volcano. For Tungsten it will just melt. And that is also ok. That is why the conveyor loader and the dispenser are set to mineral. It will just be transported out over time.

Liquid tungsten is hotter than liquid niobium so I don’t think this setup will work with that temperature.
@Luma_plays
@Luma_plays 2 года назад
Hi Tyler don't take this the wrong way: I would not have posted this if I didn't test it for at least 50 (sometimes hundreds of) cycles. The whole video shows the tungsten volcano and in the end you can see a small area from my testing branche. So now to the point :D : The temperature of niobium is not the issue. The problem is that niobium volcanoes erupt only once ever 10 cycles or so with a huge amount at once (230kg/s). And that amount normally forms natural tiles. So you would need an automatic miner and I couldn't find the space for that in there. I am always open for improvements on my build. This time I skimmed a little on the Description 😅 but there are always links to the save file in there if you want to check out the map yourself. (Hopefully) It should work. There is always that one situation where something is different. That could not be foreseen or has been tested wrong by me.
@tylerweir
@tylerweir 2 года назад
The thing about tungsten volcanoes is overtime it will heat up the insulation tiles (unless made of insulation) to the point where any material will liquify. It may not change much in 50 cycles but since liquid tungsten comes out at 3700c it will eventually liquify all the machines because 1 steam turbine won’t be able to tackle all of the heat.
@tylerweir
@tylerweir 2 года назад
My suggestion is using the volcanoes not only for metal but for cooling in your base. I have just enough space with 2 steam turbines for 3 aqua-tuners and looping conveyor rail system with thermal sensors in the steam room to cool the metal before it reaches my base. I make sure the system is always on by pumping the liquid around my base to prevent any spike in temperatures when the volcano is dormant.
@Luma_plays
@Luma_plays 2 года назад
Hi @@tylerweir sorry for the late answer (YT put you in held for review for no reason). Good suggestion for a normal base. I just wanted to make the build as small as possible. I hope the insulation (ceramic) will survive this. (Liquids are not a problem by the way that is why magma on insulations tiles made out of normal stuff is mostly fine. But gases get a modifier and they get pressed into the walls with that temp modifier. So it could become a problem later on. The thing is: Since the room is full with 2000kg steam the heat will be dispersed a lot and the tiles should never reach high temperature numbers. The most that i encountered was 230°C when I switched out the volcanoes when they got dormant. Normally it should stay at around 200. So i think it may be fine. Some more testing could be needed (but i already almost spent a week on that one.. I need to move on at some point :D)
@Mandersen700
@Mandersen700 2 года назад
I used a similar but larger design on tungsten volcanos before. The keys to make it work are: the vacuum the steam turbine is in; the steam pressure; and that is the only thing the aquatuner is cooling is the small system shown. mess with one of these variables to much and the system will fail.

Is there a substitute for naptha tho I wonder.
@Luma_plays
@Luma_plays 2 года назад
Yes alot of liquids but which one that depends on the part of the build. On the Steam Turbine any liquid that does not freeze with the temperatures you put into the sensor -14°C. And this liquid can under no circumstances touch the liquid or metal on the right. (technically you ideally separate them with tiles but i was saving space this way). The liquid on the right can be everything that doesn't turn into gas up to around 550°C. So you can fill it completely with petroleum, naphtha or nuclear waste; or a mixture of them. I was saving liquid by using a mixture. For the liquid on top of the metal tile in front of the conveyor loader: this better be a liquid with high viscosity (like in front of the steam turbine, that would be easier). So Naphtha, nuclear waste, visco gel. Or tiny amounts of other liquids that do not freeze at the temperature you put into the sensor -14°C. If the liquid amount is too small it might happen, that the hot material that is transported out evaporates that. so that woudn't be good. Since i don't tested that area with different liquids i am not sure what is save at that spot.
