When you hear Poets of the Fall live and suddenly realize that his voice isn't edited or autotuned at all and the pure talent just hits you like a 50-ton freight train.

Aye, I was hugely impressed when I saw one of their live shows, he is one of those rare talents that sounds just as good live as on record.

I found Late Goodbye by mistake on limewire in 2004, while looking for a non-mainstream song. POTF became my favorite band soon after that. I was glad to finally be able to buy all their music to support them.

Ahh.... Max Payne... When 'The Matrix' was the biggest mind-blower in the past five years and EVERYONE was cramming 'Bullet Time' into their games, only Max Payne was noir incarnate and won hands down. When you pause just after shooting a bullet and can see it in the orbit cam.... When the door blasts into the subway and goes into slo-mo... Fantastic and decidedly revolutionary game play.... And then they did it again with a stronger story and POTF as backing track. The best closer to a video game TO THIS DATE EVEN. Poets of the Fall is a group that is music genius and defies convention. This is both their brilliance and their curse. Hear them once and you are hooked for life. That first listen is the hardest to achieve and the sole reason they are not bigger than Jesus or Elvis.

I recommend to check their live versions. They really show how good this band is. Marko Saaresto’s voice is amazing in reality, not just on videos and official recordings. Try for instance their Moscow concert videos i.e. song Illusion & Dream (Live w/Lyrics). I understand your opinion about this song that it is not so good as Carnival of Rust. To me Carnival of Rust was the introduction to Poets to the Fall. Like love at the first sight. There is something special in that song.

I first heard them in about 2006, and I've been rooting for them ever since. I never get tired of Carnival of Rust myself, and I love watching cell footage of them performing it live despite the low audio fidelity, because they always find a way to make it feel fresh and new, imo. You speaking of Marko Saaresto's powerful voice reminded me of recently watching some footage from Estonia, in which they sound so good as a band in live venues now. It's also been my pleasure to hear Saaresto's range and accuracy and array of techniques grow over the years. The very first song I heard from them and the one that made me hunt down the band name was Sorry 'Go Round. My favorite studio release of theirs is Temple of Thought. I think you might be partial to those and also to Smoke and Mirrors. Possibly Jealous Gods too. I'm just guessing though. Thank you for reacting to this band.

I was at that Estonian show actually, a brilliant performance. It's a real fucking shame that I had to run for my bus before they played Carnival of Rust and this song, I'm still gutted.

I have a recommendation for you. How about trying out their heaviest stuff? I recommend the songs that they play under the name Old Gods Of Asgard (A fictional band created for the Alan Wake game [played by Poets Of The Fall]). more specifically, try Children Of The Elder God. They've also made a sort of southern rock blues song (the sort you'd hear blaring out of a 18 wheeler down a deserted road) called Grinder's Blues. They made it for the game Rochard. There's just so much to recommend. I don't know what you want to hear. Also, I agree with ImberNoctis (aside from the Jealous Gods suggestion).

If you feel like doing more songs from Poets of the Fall, you could take a look at their 'side project' for Alan Wake where they did several songs under the alias 'Old Gods of Asgard', most notably the tracks 'The Poet and The Muse' and 'Children of the Elder Gods'. From the other albums.. I would personally recommend 'Where do we draw the line' from Revolution Roulette, and 'War' from Twilight Theater. Perhaps even a revisit to Carnival of Rust album and checking out 'Locking Up The Sun' and paying more focus on the music video of that one.

If you like that one check out pretty much anything on the Alexander theater Sessions album and check out the video the quote unquote official music video for children of the sun. Such a beautiful profound song. I recently lost the love of my life tragically I don't get into that too much but I still sing that song for her even though she's gone. Poets of the Fall it's been in my life since late goodbye came out and I'll tell you I've been humbled and I've been showing What Love actually is through that music.. I don't care how cold-hearted anybody is it's not possible to listen to some of their music and not just feel that somewhere deep within. God bless

...most logical follow up for Late Goodbye is "War", which is also made for Max Pain game 🙂

It wasn't for a Max Payne game, it was for Alan Wake.

They have better ones, for example "Jealous gods", "Center Stage" or "The Distance" are excelent. You would love them as much as you loved Carnival of Rust.
