In this video we're working out how to paint the gorgeous new Vampire Lord for the Soulblight Gravelords... This is suitable for any armour though, it is a great way to make 40k/SF/Fantasy models stand out as different, and is fun, enjoyable... and surprisingly easy and fast! No Airbrush is required :)
The timestamps below allow you to skip straight to the recipe, but if you want to learn about how to make your own colour-schemes we definitely recommend watching the entire thing!

I was stunned when I watched this video at its release and I immediately wanted to do this myself. I also wanted to paint a Vampire army in this style but shyed away from the idea when I realised that I was actually the third soulblight player in our path to glory group and that the others had already painted their bloodknights red aswell. I went for a purple themed vampire army instead but kept this colour recipe in the back of my mind. And now I have finally tested it on my newest army project - a Adeptus Sororitas army from the order of the bloody rose. The result for my test mini is absolutely beautiful and I really loved painting this way. So I just wanted to leave a real quick thank you for this awesome video and inspiration =)

@@ArtisOpus Personal perspective I think but it addressed a few questions I had about doing an en grisaille approach with my Artis Opus D brushes rather than the usual way of doing zenithal with spray or airbrush. I personally often use my Series D in place of an airbrush as I don't own one (live in a London apartment with a toddler so not an option :P ). I then took what I learnt from watching you in this video and the result was really successful, though I wasn't using metallics. I think there is a lot of potential for different styles of shading with contrast over the top.

Love the video, I will certainly be giving it a go. If you want a warmer gold colour to start with then undercoat with a burnt sienna before putting on the gold, gives a much warmer glow to the gold than the black - got the tip watching a restorer putting on gold leaf.. :-)

My best results started used a red & gold mix (over black) with silver added for final highlights and then used bloodletter red (the discontinued citadel red glaze) to re-enforce the red. Contrast paint hasn't worked so well for me. The old 90s crimson gore worked really well for metallic reds without needing a glaze.

Thanks alot for the Video, really love it. I'm thinking of something like that for my Obsidian Rose Drukhari as well (my first paint miniature ever too) but I want it to be more black or dark with more bright red shade what should I do to improve from this method ? Should I go with Metalic Gold or go with Dark Silver then shade it with Red ? I appreciate and welcome all the advices :)

Hey dude, bright red is easy - just do less layers. Black is also easy, just add in some black :D Gold or Silver is fine, do a test square to see which you prefer, then go with that one :)

No reason why not at all dude! We've had a couple of comments asking if it can be done with black... there's no reason why not, it'd probably be more forgiving than red, once you got the mix right!

Question sir? If you do not have huldra blue what other blues are compatible from valejo or citadel or kimera or P3? Painting my Dominion stormcast army in this way so I really want to find a substitute blue closest to Huldra blue...
@ArtisOpus

You shouldn't struggle to get hold of it, bud? It's pretty amazing! Take your deepest blue, and mix with a tiny bit of your deepest blue ink/contrast, that should get you close-ish :)

Hi Sophie, it's absolutely transferable (see recent ultramarine!) - check the blood knights out, both of those videos educate about the experimenting process I used, let us know if you've got any questions in another vid, YT isn't great for ongoing chat notifications :).

Love these videos and learn a lot. One question though, why talk about the wet pallette like it's inferior? If anything I'd promote both, I certainly use both for many different things. I just notice that every video I watch usually has something about why on tool is better than the other. As a life long artist I think that thought is wrong, ie sure I could use and inking pen but I could also use a quill nib or a ink brush and they all do very powerful things. Idk food for thought..... dry pallette is awesome but so is the wet pallette, their purposes are very different.

Hey buddy, can you give me a timestamp? I have nothing against them, as I often make sure to mention when talking about dry-palette.

I am still staying away from contrast for the sole reason that I feel I need to get better at regular painting. They feel like cheating or shortcuts, which is fine if you want to paint armies or just speed paint in general, but since I am only painting single minis, I feel I need to just paint and get better if that makes sense
@ArtisOpus
@ArtisOpus 3 года назад
It does dude! However I wouldn't be too dogmatic with it, they're a tool like any other, so for instance here you could treat the contrast stage as your '2nd basecoat' and then go crazy with techy-blending the huldra blue into the shadows! You could also drop some great big fat blended highlights on the metallics for the bits you wanted to make shine brighter through the contrast mix! It's up to you how techy you want to get, I agree that washes don't generally teach brush control hugely well... however if you *do* control them more you can get some really outstanding results. Thanks for the comment, totally get where you're coming from: squidmar threw away his washes for a reason! :)
@MrStatistx
@MrStatistx 3 года назад
@@ArtisOpus I wouldn't go as far as throw them away, but for example I made it a goal to not use Washes in skin for now, except precise recess washing, if at all. Gonna teach me to blend and shade by painting rather than sobbing it on XD I am not in the "contrast bad, don't touch" camp, but for now I'll do wtihout, til I can achieve those results with glazes and inks

Ha! That's not a he! The other aristocratic lady vampire was titled a Lord as well. The armor's pretty dead on, too. Male form would have a belly. Female form has the belly shifted upward. Still, great work on it.

All the female vampires also have distinguished breast plates this one does not in my opinion I think the model is more supposed to be gender neutral so you can impose whatever you think it is on it since it's a nameless character

@@ArtisOpus I mean you gotta try it probably, but they feel pretty good out of the bottle, don't have very big metal flakes and come in different shades sometimes with good highlight colors (I like necro gold with citrin highlight for example). When it comes to silver my top is the vallejo metal color. It also has a gold, but haven't tried that.
