It’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for: a new Metallica album! Does “72 Seasons” show that the metal legends still have plenty of gas left in the tank, or that they’re well past their creative peak? Where does their latest studio album rank within its storied catalog? And can you believe that albums like “Kill ‘Em All,” “... And Justice For All,” “St. Anger” and “Death Magnetic” are celebrating milestone anniversaries in 2023?!
Find out what Matt and Zach think in Epic Footnote Productions’ “2 Minutes to Review,” a podcast that’s part album review and part competition. Thank you for saying that Death Magnetic was the last time you really enjoyed a Metallica album. I feel the same. And as a HUGE Metallica fan for many years, that's tough to say. But I feel like Death Magnetic returned to their roots, and ever since it's just been the same song over and over. And that 1 repeated song is not good.

@ Epic Footnote I’ve listened to 72 Seasons a few more times and even gave it the full on blast it in the car on a short road trip test and while I don’t think I’d move it up the list much if at all, I will say that at LEAST they took a few chances incorporating some unexpected chord progressions and different soundscapes. Some of them are big wins, some are HUGE misses. Specifically some of the vocal “Melodie’s” Hetfield tried are big misses imo. I’m surprised that you guys hold DM in such high regard bc I thought I was the only one who loved that lp! What was so great about it imo, was the fact that yes, they revisited the RTL, MOP and Justice era with more progressive song structures even down to run order of the first “ side” if you will, it still included some songs that where far different than anything they did in the 80’s like Unforgiven 3 ( which I really liked ) . I also include the EP Beyond Magnetic in my assessment of that lp even though I agree that those 4 songs didn’t really “ fit” alongside the 10 tracks that made the lp, 3 of the 4 songs ( not a big fan of Just a Bullet Away not a bad song but not on the level of the other 13 tracks they cut ). are GREAT songs imo especially Hate Train and Rebel of Babylon . Hardwired had its moments like the title track, Spit Out the Bone and Halo on Fire. But overall it was a massive disappointment coming on the heels of one of their very best lps in DM. With Hardwired, for me anyway, it was side 2 with the exception of Bone that really doomed it. Side one wasn’t bad and even the lesser tracks like Now that We’re Dead were good enough as “ filler” but side 2 was so bad imo, that it killed whatever goodwill I had for it on side one. St. Anger, we all know that was a total misstep BUT, if you listen back to a lot of it, there were some HUGE riffs on it. That said, the awful production coupled with sidelining Kirk, and the lack of any nuance doomed it. I actually think if they went back and re-recorded it with new arraignments, solo sections etc. it could at least be a decent offering. Hearing some snippets of what they initially worked on at Persidio before Hetfield went to rehab, it sounded like some of those songs could’ve been pretty damn good. Things like Temptation sounded like it had potential along with several other songs they initially worked on. Now, they gave the impression during Some Kind of Monster that they actually had a full lps worth of songs recorded before they scrapped it all , I would LOVE to hear those songs in their entirety to see if they were as good as I think they may have been. I doubt we will ever hear them unfortunately. I initially thought maybe some of those riffs ended up on DM but, they don’t strike me as a band that keeps older riffs and ideas in the can to use at another time like many bands do and have done. Van Halen comes to mind as the vast majority of the songs thst ended up on A Different Kind of Truth came from demos that were 30-40 years old. Not saying that’s a bad thing but, I don’t think Metallica is the type of band that does that. You guys seem to be very knowledgeable music fans and I’d love to sit with you guys and shoot the shit about music . I was that kid that had to know everything about my favorite artists down to producers sing lebgth etc. I was /am such a music geek that at one time I could tell you who wrote every song on every lp I owned along with run time, the whole 9 yards! Lol. Anyway love the channel keep doing what your doing !

As always, really appreciate the kind words (we'd love to shoot the shit with you too some day!) and for the thoughtful response! Well said all around. What would you say was James' biggest "miss" melody wise? As for DM, agreed they did try a lot of new ideas (Unforgiven 3 with the orchestra on S&M2 is gorgeous!), but in hindsight the production really could've been better. And sometimes you have to ask yourself how much you loved the album or got caught up in the hype that the band went "old school" again. That definitely happened with Hardwired... though Halo On Fire and Spit Out The Bone (as you mentioned) still are phenomenal. As for St. Anger, 100% agree - in fact during our very 1st episode we discussed how much better that album would be remastered and slightly reworked (the new version of All Within My Hands is proof of that). And even with its flaws, there's no denying that at the time they HAD to make THAT album. It really was more of a therapy session that a recording session, which is respectable in its own ways.

@ Epic Footnote , the biggest miss vocal wise unfortunately also happens to be one of the better overall songs. Room of Mirrors has the worst vocal performance during the verses. Fortunately the pre chorus and chorus vocals somewhat save the tune . That said , the main verse riff sounds nearly identical to Lords of Summer. As for Death Magnetic, yes, the production leaves a lot to be desired but, the songs themselves imo are far and away the best collection of songs post Justice.

@ Epic Footnote. I never viewed Death Magnetic as an attempt at a “ throwback” if you will. Rick Rubins only real contribution to that lp as a “ producer” was convincing them it was the ok to use those first 4 lps as a jumping off point for DM. At the end of the day, it was the quality of the songs that made it a great lp which is why it’s so high on my list. To me, DM would’ve been the logical follow up to Justice. It had all of the best qualities of their more progressive early stuff while still moving the ball forward without taking such a huge left turn with the Black. I only wish DM actually SOUNDED as good as Black. The production and the sound of Black were by FAR the best qualities of the lp. I was very excited about Hardwired before it came out and I heard the entire thing. As I said, it has some great moments but in SOME ways, thus far anyway, I could take the 4 best songs from Hardwired, and the 4 best from 72 Seasons and I would have a pretty good Metallica lp. Which is exactly how I view Load and Reload. Imo, Metallica have never put out an album that was just completely shit imo although St Anger gets pretty damn close! Lol. I still wonder what they would sound like if they didn’t have a lazy drummer. The worst part about it is that I KNOW Lars CAN be more creative bc he showed it to a certain degree on Justice. It seems like since Bob Rock convinced Lars that straight 4/4 rock beats were perfectly fine for every single song, he’s just ran with it. When I hear certain riffs on this lp, I can actually hear in my head some interesting fills and changes that would totally up the ante on a lot of their songs. 90% of the time his rolls or fills are simply him following the guitar lines on the snare. I really wish I could get my hands on the isolated guitar and bass tracks and even though I’m not a drummer, ( I play guitar ) I think I could use my drum program and could create some great drum tracks on many of these tunes.

Agreed about DM fitting right in between AJFA and Black Album (and the production of it really is the one thing that keeps it from being a stellar album). But also think it's hard to deny that DM was Metallica reacting to the harsh feedback on St Anger (and years of old school fans complaining they hadn't sound "fast" since AJFA). Interesting comparison between Hardwired/72 Seasons and Load/Reload. What I do think, though, that 72 Season has over Hardwired is that everyone sounds more energized on it (or at least sound more aligned and fired up than they did on Hardwired). Which is why Lars' lazy drumming (as you perfectly put it) is forgivable in this sense - because while it's lazy from a technical standpoint it doesn't sound like it from an enthusiasm point of view... at least one of the Epic Footnote guys thinks 😉

It sounds like one of you went into this thinking "This is Metallica, therefore it's going to be great!" and the other went in with no expectations and came back with a realistic review of the album. This album was absolutely not good, and I think even the 3-star review is too good for this album. It's a bad album, which sounds exactly like the previous album (Hardwired. Which was also bad.) It's actually the first Metallica album that I didn't buy. I listened to it, but I didn't purchase it because I saw no reason to purchase it. I will never choose to listen to this album again, because it was just not good. However it is refreshing to hear someone else give it some actual criticism, because so many people are just saying it's amazing. If it was any band other than Metallica, people would be reviewing it differently.

Hey guys. Haven’t commented in awhile but, given I’m old and have been a fan since I dropped the needle on Kill ‘em All 40 years ago, I feel I must chime in. The first 4 lps are untouchable imo. They were one of the forefathers that ushered in a harder, faster, more complex form of Metal. Their conscious decision to slow down and embrace the mainstream on Black wasn’t a total shock to me bc they had been flirting slower more to the point songs from RTL through Justice. It was ok, it sounded great but, I wasn’t a fan of the majority of it. They went alternative metal on the load lps. If you took the best 4 tracks off each, you’d have a decent lp. At Anger had some riffs but over all it was a mess. Now, Death a magnetic imo was a GREAT lp the best thing since Justice by a mile!! Next, Hardwired was a huge letdown overall after the great DM. It had a couple of good tunes but it definitely didn’t stay in my rotation long. This brings us to 72 Seasons. After multiple listens, my honest opinion is that for the most part they’ve completely lost the plot. The saving grace for the lp is Kirks solos. Some of the better solos in awhile. I think there are 3 stand out tracks. 72 Seasons is great and I love the chorus and the riff in the chorus. Prime Metallica on that one! Shadows Follow and Room of Mirrors are the other two stand out tracks. Chasing Light and If Darkness had a Son are decent tracks. Hetfields lyrics are very good and on the level of DM but, James vocals are very off putting at times imo . James at his very best really barks the words out but on some of these songs, SOMEONE told him he could actually sing and that approach not only doesn’t work , it sounds forced. James isn’t a traditional singer, he can carry a tune to a point but he’s at his best when he’s spitting venom. I use a 10 star rating system in order to give me a little more wiggle room when rating an lp. The 5 star system doesn’t give me enough room to rate them. Example, if say I’m comparing Laterallus to Aenima, I would give both 4.5 even though I like Lateralys a bit more but, 5 stars is reserved for the very best lps ever, so I couldn’t go any higher . This might not be the best comparison bc I’d rank both of those lps in my top 15 all time but I digress. So, on a 1-10 scale I give this one a 5 and that rating is on the strength of 3 songs . One last thing, Inorrata . It’s a cool idea but, musically it could have been trimmed down to 5 or 6 minutes and would’ve been much better for it. Lyrically it shoots its wad within 4 minutes and musically within 6. Normally with Metallica there epic songs tend to be some of their best work but not in this case. Love the channel guys keep doing it!

Thanks for chiming in, listening and the kind words!!! Fair points - where would you rank 72 Seasons among the rest of Metallica’s catalog?

@ Epic Footnote. Out of their 11 studio lps , looking at it as a whole, I’d say 9. St. Anger last Hardwired 10 this one 9. The Loads are at 7 and 8 in no particular order even though the 4 best songs of those 2 are on Load imo. I’ll just give you my order for all the studio lps. 1. Justice 2. Puppets 3. Death Magnetic 4. Lightning 5. Kill ‘em All 6. Black lp. If you include Garage. Inc , the double lp release that is, I’d actually have it number 6 maybe even 5 ahead of Kill ‘em All. Their covers are the very best covers that any metal band have ever done. That said, there are a couple on Garage Revisited that I despise . Whiskey in a Jar, Turn the Page and Loverman. That said, the Mercyful Fate medley, the Sabbath Medley were great enough to cancel out those 3 duds and the rest of it, Am I Evil? And the rest of it were great imo. All the Diamond Head covers were sooooo much better than the original versions, they almost don’t sound like the same songs.

@@timothynalley7802 so you at least liked 72 Seasons better than Hardwired? Or is that not saying much? (Ha!)

@ Epic Footnote not saying much! Lol you guys talked about Lars drumming prowess. There’s no doubt they wouldn’t have become the biggest band ever in metal without Lars drive. As for his playing? I’ve always wondered what they would’ve sounded like ( especially the 80’s stuff ) if they had a top tier drummer. I’d love to hear how Danny Carey would’ve approached their early stuff. Lars is your basic “ Phil Rudd “ of metal type drummer. All of his stuff with the possible exception of a couple of tracks off Justice, are just straight forward thrash beats . Another lp I’d live to hear a different drummer approach the stuff on DM
