To answer your question: Where is he now? . . . Jason Newsted quit the band in 2001. He has done a few projects over the years. He has gotten on stage a few times with Metallica to do a few tunes on special occasions. I like Rob, and he's a great bassist, but I miss Jason in the Metallica lineup.
With all due respect to Robert, I miss Jason a LOT. Just his hair twirl alone from back camera shot of 1991 Moscow Sandman opener puts him in full metal legend status. And this just adds to the legend.
Each bassist brought their own flavor, and they're all good. One thing they all have in common, amazing bassists with tons of energy. Cliff had soul, Jason had grit, and Rob has that funk.
Jason was such an amazing live performer. He was only given writing credit on a few songs but those songs are all great (Blackened, My Friend of Misery, and Where the Wild Things Are).
I wish Cliff was around for this as this 89 & 91 tours was Metallica at their peak. It was like everything clicked in regards to their live performance. Seen them with Cliff during their Masters tour, then Justice and twice during their Black tour, the growth was noticeable. That 2nd concert during their Black tour without GNR was so much better then with GNR, it was like 4 hours of pure Metallica.
I was at the Phoenix show on this tour (the last Metallica concert I ever went to). Was so packed and hot that i blacked out for about 10 minutes. I could hear but not see. That was scary!
New to the channel. This is a fantastic performance but I’d ALWAYS SUGGEST LISTENING TO THE ALBUM VERSON BEFORE THE LIVE. Especially with Metallica cause the crowd and the volume is so lit. You can’t hear shit! Go back and do the album version too please 🙏 🤘🔥
