As a veteran, I can tell you the speed and tempo of this song fits well with my memories of what it’s like when the bullets are flying and all hell is breaking loose. Thank God for Metallica! Huge impact on my post war life.
@@mojorizn72 I've never got to speak to a veteran before so I would love to ask are all wars just a way for the country to make money, a documentary I watched said that the Korean War should of never lasted as long as it did but the US was in so deep that they would look stupid for backing out so they kept the war going and brainwashed there soilders into hating the koreans to keep the war going just to protect there country's image, thank you for your service
@@og2tone9o15 Not all wars are the same as far as the troops on the ground are concerned. But one thing has been the same for all wars beginning after WWII. The bureaucrats in DC have had entirely too much influence on how the military is run. They have distorted the truth about every war since Korea. I do not trust my government.
@@mojorizn72 do you think its bull crap that the American army is still in Iraq pretending to be fighting of a pretend threat or are they just there stealing oil. In the movie jarhead some soilders said there whole time down in Iraq they never shot there gun once ,they just did made up time consuming tasks to make it look like they were down there for a reason while the army was stealing oil , just ignore this if I'm making no sense
Hands DOWN!! They rule the world. And maybe another album is being mulled over as this covid-19 is keep gatherings out of the question !!lets hope!! I seen it here on you tube on live wire!!
I've always loved that line and specifically listen for it each time I play the song. James so perfectly voices a complete dismissal of a person's life. He chose to deliver the line that way and it just makes song complete.
@@jwesley235 I've thought about that as well. Thing is he got into kirks bunk didnt he? So if he lived like more than likely would have to be brown bread. One of those really weird situations...a definite fork in the road situation
I was in the infantry when this came out and I was a young dumbass yelling this while cranking it up on my Kenwood system. Lots of beer helped. Best metal album ever!!!
My Lt. used to call on members of the platoon to call cadence during PT. I had been listening to this for days when he called on me. So I used what was in my head and called cadence with this song. He didn't call on me for quite awhile after.
Number 1 reaction channel for me. Like someone else posted before ...."It's like listening to some good music with a cool friend" . I couldn't agree more . Keep 'em coming !
James Hetfield has always worn his emotions on the tip of his lyric-writing pen and his microphone. He has an incredible ability to be very descriptive in what he is trying to get across, and yet, at the very same time, very to the point. Thanks for another awesome reaction!
And he makes sure you get it with very descriptive lyrics that smash you in the face. Im 51 and im still here. I was lucky enough to be around from the beginning!!!
@@drock55551 It was the drummer for Artillery, Carsten Nielsen, who helped Lars level up his drumming during this era. Now writing the drum parts, idk about that.
Sorry but this is not pretty mild compared to anything. You're missing the energy that translates to the song, don't forget instruments were recorded live at that time. It requires tons of stamina to transfer all that into record. I'm not even starting to describe i.e. how difficult is to hit the drums that hard and precise.
100% Agreed. I was around the same age when some little metal dude at my school played this on his record player when we hung out after school. His pops was a hardcore Marine. He was just being a young punk. But I felt like Disposable Heroes was a jam that balanced both sides of military service. The Human Soldier. Gotta have the balls to do it, but it sucks at the same time. Much Respect to those who serve and have served for us.
Orion is Cliffs song. Its art plain and simple. I suggest listening to it, then again but the second time around you need to close your eyes and create your own story
If you've ever known someone who came from a family with a long tradition of military service, the "life planned out before my birth/nothing could I say" lyric is pretty damn accurate.
I know a lot of people will laugh at this, but Little Richard had the greatest voice in rock and roll history. Go back and listen to it and tell me he didn't!!! Listen to Good Golly Miss Molly, and tel me you wouldn't have asked him to be in Led Zeppelin if you hadn't discovered Robert Plant. Totally underrated by the last few generations. Go back and listen!!!
@whyameyeevil Definitive rock n roll voice. He had a smooth voice but also had that perfect rasp that inspired so many singers. The high "whooooo" that the Beatles used alot. The raucous howls. He inspired everyone.
Man as a fan of Metallica for almost 30 years it is refreshing to see these reactions. My family went trough war in Croatia while i was listening to the songs like this one.
@@podtrooper3219 Good call Damage Inc. is a killer song! Love the guitar solo in Damage Inc. also, very underrated. You never hear either songs on the radio which is disappointing.
True, and also 'Sounding of the clock that ticks/get used to it somehow' is followed by Lars simulating that 'ticking' with the muted cymbals. (In my opinion) the little lead part by Kirk throughout the song is almost like the trumpet (?) tune they used to play at war to indicate different actions like 'Charge' or 'Fall Back' . Metallica always had these kind of small touches/flavors to their music and i believe it was/is largely an impact of Cliff.
What kind of a nut jobs hate him? Are you referring to the whole Napster thing? Which is ridiculously weak. Or the fact that he’s said a couple of things that indicate he’s not left wing? In which case you need serious mental help.
@@KillDozer44 actually yes, guitar tone is flawless, you can hear cliffs bass, lyrics are deep, from start to finish this is perfect....so yeah im right
Probably my favorite Metallica song of all time. The superb playing, tempo changes, and Lars frenetic drumming is unmatched by any other Metallica song
This always makes me think of those families that have "military traditions", generation after generation of soldiers. While admirable, it's also a bit sad.
Why do you consider it a bit sad as well? Just curious. I come from such a family so I dont see that side of it. Great grandfather, grandfather, father, myself, my son all served or are serving. Our family loves this country and wanted to defend it. We didn't influence each other to join. My father actually advised me to not join, but being the rebellious teen, I joined. That being said, could you explain why it's a bit sad? I respect your opinion and want to learn from it. Keep the horns up, brother 🤘🤘. Let's enjoy the music.
Bobby Ball First let me say, I respect everyone's rights and reasons for choosing that option; hell, I even tried to enlist back in the day. But, as the tone of the song lyrics point out, it seems like an unending feeding of flesh into the meat grinder of war. With those in higher positions seemingly giving little to no care and regard about those that they send to their premature deaths. Patriotism is admirable for what it is, but it just saddens me to see successive generations in certain families continue to jump into that fray. Not to cast dispersions, but I'm also forced to wonder if your father was aware of your rebellious streak and used a bit of reverse psychology on you. 🤷🏻♂️
You two, stop it now! This is RU-vid, no decent and respectful conversations are allowed, you should know that... Now, please insult eachother, you get one each, thank you.
I saw this song performed live. It was the sickest thing I have ever seen. Look up set list from Detroit Orion Music Festival. Setlist tore off your face. Amazing. Seen them 7x. Best concert I have ever been to.
I've only seen them three times ('92, 99 and 2006)but I was lucky enough that the last time was the 20th anniversary of Master of Puppets, so they played the entire album from start to finish. Awesome. Crazy to think that next year is 35 years since it was released.
@@neildavies2276 the Orion festival first day Metallica played as a pseudonym band Called Dehan on one of the ancillary stages. The played the entire kill em all album......but I wasnt there yet 😕
@@randallcalhoun6604 oh Bummer! I'm sure I've seen footage of that show on RU-vid somewhere, but that's small consolation! If it makes you feel any better, at Metallicas Big Day Out at Milton Keynes Bowl in 1999, I watched most of the bands, but missed one I'd never heard of - Queens Of The Stone Age. Yep, that was the time I decided to get a burger and go for a pee. Pretty annoyed about that 13 months later when I was given one of their albums...
Terrific song thx for sharing that, brought me back to when I was 15, lol, great choice, seen Metallica live many times, and I hope many more, thx again,gr8 choice 🤘🤘🤘
This is one of the best anti war songs ever made IMO! As a kid I didn't get much of the lyrics but still loved it, but as an adult this brings me to tears. A powerful track with an even more powerful text to go with it. War is hell, for all involved and hate breeds hate. So don't start any more of them.
Truly enjoying this channel and your walk though the music we grew up on. The look on your face, as you try to process some of these songs is priceless...
There's a lot of wisdom in this song especially for how young they were here. By the end of my 6 years in the Army I don't think I even had this level of insight into what service men and women really are to politicians.
So freaking eclectic with your choices today. In the Summertime, Frankenstein, Your Love and Disposable Heroes. Amazing, brother. Keep up the amazing job.
Had a gunny on my porch in 97 I was close to being a Marine but my gut said no.. No offense to those who went to Iraq or Afghanistan but I laid down my guns and picked up my bass guitar!
More than any other, this song made me a metalhead. They wouldn't play Metallica on the radio, but it still sold like crazy. Nothing else out there really sounded like this.
I know it's weird, but I am in my 60's and never appreciated Metallica until a couple of years ago. Go figure. Another great anti-war song in the harder rock genre is Black Sabbath's War Pigs.
You should check out the video for the song "One" from their " ... And Justice For All." album .... its heartbreaking. I think its the best anti-war songs ever written ;(
Every fan's favorite album. And easily their best writing. Great reaction, love your face around 7:42. They also have a song called To Live Is To Die. Worth a listen...
When I was in the service and stationed at Misawa AB in Japan, my friends and I would play this album when we were droving to the Shimoda mall as if were were on a mission. This album is a top ten album in my collection.
This whole album is this kinda good and this kinda powerful. And everything from Ride the Lightning as well. My very favorite is Orion, but as much as they annoyed my with their hardcore anti-piracy stance, they really do have a lot of really great music over the years. My first album was And Justice. Harvester of Sorrow 24x7 for months after that, lol. P.S. Metallica is definitely a Studio Version First kinda band, IMO. While they are good live, they are also greatly enhanced by studio magic.
Apart from fleeing to Canada to keep from being drafted, the only ways that you could avoid being drafted were: If you were mentally or medically unfit for military service You're a a college student One of your parents was a senator or some other type of government official
@Tammy T I served in the Marines as well.Thankfully I never went to the ME to fight in the oil wars.I'm going to drop a quote by MajGen Smedley Butler USMC.Your husband will recognize his name I'm sure........“I spent 33 years and four months in active military service and during that period I spent most of my time as a high class muscle man for Big Business, for Wall Street and the bankers. In short, I was a racketeer, a gangster for capitalism. I helped make Mexico and especially Tampico safe for American oil interests in 1914. I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City Bank boys to collect revenues in. I helped in the raping of half a dozen Central American republics for the benefit of Wall Street. I helped purify Nicaragua for the International Banking House of Brown Brothers in 1902-1912. I brought light to the Dominican Republic for the American sugar interests in 1916. I helped make Honduras right for the American fruit companies in 1903. In China in 1927 I helped see to it that Standard Oil went on its way unmolested. Looking back on it, I might have given Al Capone a few hints. The best he could do was to operate his racket in three districts. I operated on three continents.”
We serve for so many reasons. College. Money. Family. No one wants to die. Everyone hopes they won't. When we are deployed into harm's way, we know that our leadership has given us the best training, the best equipment, and the best chance to survive while accomplishing the objective. This song sees service from one perspective. There are others. I'm proud of my service and proud of my brothers in arms.
J, you are such a kind and gentle soul, it was almost difficult to watch you watch this. It's harsh, but real. I'm glad you enjoyed it. As others have pointed out here, there really was nothing like 80's Metallica. It was the right time and the right band and I'm very fortunate to have been front row for much of it.
I listened to that for the first time when it just came out. 1986. Smokin a bowl in a parking lot at the huddle. We were in a 1978 Chevy short bed pickup with a boom box between us. Man times have changed. We had similar reactions that you do we were just so blown and didn't have the lyrics it was a whole different experience believe me. I like these reaction videos from people that were not there keep it up!!
Almost all of Metallica's early works had more classical music arrangements to their songs as opposed to pop music song structure. You can really feel it in their intros and transitions.

Couldn't click on this fast enough. I've been waiting for you to react to this song and glad you did. Keep up the great work and can't wait for another Metallica reaction.
Blasting this in my Walkman at 6am while waiting for the school bus. Then bouncing along the way to school in the back of the bus with my knees up on the back of the seat in front of me. The small amount of time that didn't belong to my friends, parents or my teachers. Memories. It's time to give this album another front to back listen. It's been well over a decade!
I went to a secret gig when they played as Damage Inc. I can't remember now if it was supporting Metal Church at the Marquee club in 1990 or the 100 Club in '87. They came on to a half-empty floor at the Marquee. Great memories!!
Lu Ger You rally can’t do metal better than this. The writing A+, every member shows out, amazing transitions, beautiful solos, and the band is as tight as humanly possible. Also, Hetfield’s right hand is a machine gun. His down picking is unrivaled. Just incredible.
