Yes, this song literally saved me. Not only this song. ALL of Metallica's music is like medicine. Music, members of Metallica. It is thanks to you that I am still here and it is good. Thank you Metallica.
@@Halvor1 ye but they wont be the same. Just compare concert 10 years ago and now. U can apply the same ideea for the next 10 years. he should go asap till they wont get too old. They already said they are afraid they wont be able to sing master of puppets as it should so they will soon stop performing it. Also the voice is going down and the energy. This makes me feel so sad :( Long live metallica
I honestly don't understand how people say this performance isn't one of if not the best of this song. Personally this is my favorite performance for Fade to Black because you can feel a lot more emotion in James' voice from 4:15-5:30 especially that "goodbyeeeee" at 5:15 is just so good. With James on top of Kirk and Lars killing it this just takes the cake. I don't know what else to say I just know this is a performance you can feel through the video.
@@Ranganation As nice as a guy Hammett is, any performance with Hammett is not going to be the best. He sounds terrible in this recording as well. It is so awkward to hear Hetfield knock it out of the park, Lars being decent, even the bass is super tight with everything. And then Hamett's awkward and out of tune solo's hover on top. Does Metallica have a recording of this song where someone else plays the lead parts?
@@Prometheus4096 Then if u think that kirk isn't good enough for metallica you better write a better solo than him and then play it live in front of a crowd
Glad you had a positive outlet to help you deal with these things life throws at us. This song helped me through a very lonely time in life but it means something different to me now. That’s why it’s such a special song
Sorry for your loss. I lost my dad, my aunt, my granny the past years. Just my mom and brother left. My neighbor passed away just 2 weeks ago. I used to talk to him quite often when I saw him outside. He was a sweet kind guy and I connected very well with him. I could start to chat with him and before I knew it an hour had passed. Both bikers so lots to talk about. Hardly anyone knew he had terminal cancer. He didn't want to burden anyone with this. My friend who lived right next to him called me up and told me he passed away half an hour later. What happened? She knew about his plan to end his life with help from doctors. The date and time he picked himself and he wanted to do this alone. Rip John. Life, it seems, will fade away Drifting further, every day Getting lost within myself Nothing matters, no one else I have lost the will to live Simply nothing more to give There is nothing more for me Need the end to set me free
5:13 Gwen James says goodbye while transitioning to the next riff was just so compelling, like for on an emotional level for some reason. Could be this song just sounds and was put together this immaculately. Definitely a 100/10
It’s about 7:39am rn and as soon as I heard 5:31 and onwards from Kirk’s guitar I immediately started tearing up a bit it’s the 2nd time now I’ve cried listening to fade to black you can seriously feel every once of emotion coming out of his guitar!
I love the way that everyone is improvising, but still keeping the Integrity of the original song. Way to go guys! I will love Metallica forever! You changed my life, as well as so many others.
At 3:33, I just can't, man... My whole body shivers from that part. Goosebumps throughout the whole song. I have no idea how else can you finesse the hell out of this track. Damn, what a performance!
I’ve cried listening to this song twice in the last year+ it’s so powerful! This is the only metal song I’ve ever had speak to me so much yet so clearly at the same time!!
Seriously, never knew a $2m six string would make such a difference. Don’t think I’ve ever heard every single note Kirk played in this song until now! Amazing!
I have to admit that guitar sounds awesome. In a strange way it sounds like Gary Moore playing Metallica, if is of course a guitar which was used by him.
That’s cool. Yeah I ave no knowledge of the guitars history, just know the brand is a quality like no other. I’m just a die hard Metallica fan for 30 years now? Can’t even estimate how many times I’ve listened to this song and 7 times in person. That guitar has definitely did something I didn’t think could happen? Put song on another level. 🤘🏻
Kirk is amazing, but Lars absolutely takes it to the next level with that pounding beat in the solo. Incredible. Love how they gathered around him for support lol.
What? He's fucking terrible! He loses the beat when play fills CONSISTENTLY, as a bass player i could NEVER play with a drummer that bad...... i don't know how Trujillo does it.
Blistering? You mean lame pentatonic scales soaked in wah wah to try and cover his mistakes? Jesus, no wonder they still fill arenas because your average fan has no clue how average they are as musicians. Except for Robs bass playing and James rhythm playing.
@@barclaybass2327 I agree his wah use has gotten over the top thru the years. But I would hardly call him average. Given the age they were when they wrote this song, I'd say they are incredible musicians.
@@barclaybass2327what mistakes? Shit happens live and the wah doesn’t “cover it” so tired of this wah shit talk. Did Jimi Hendrix use it so cover mistakes? It’s a tone for fucks sake. Kirk is a legend Period.
@@oliverhall8166couldn't have said it better myself this performance is amazing and the level of talent is unreachable by most people the same people that talking mess wouldn't dare go in front of a live crowd let alone play at this caliber
He doesn't yells like he used to do the last few years......everything was....."aiiiiieeeeee". It sounded to me like he wasn"t capable or doesn't want to do his real voice....don't know why, but now sounds much better, seems much more to his '80-'90's voice.... That's my impression. :))
JDL M totally. A couple months ago I was showing to my girlfriend how Powerful was Jame's voice in the early 90's and how has changed (i was thinking in his 00's performances where his voice was a little weaker). And hearing his last live performances was amazing. Im so glad he had improved his singing the last years.
Great to see Kirk playing the "Greeny" Burst Gibson. Between him, Gary Moore and Peter Green, this guitar has been played infront of more people, at more gigs than any other. The worlds most iconic and most expensive Les Paul for sure.
Interesting fun topic and one for potential debate, you could be 100% correct, however Jimmy Pages "Number one" Les Paul which he got from Joe Walsh would be another that could give Greeny a run for its money.
I was there! Born and raised in Nebraska, and a Metallica fan since I was 12. Never thought I would get to see them in our state. Awesome show 20 years later!
yep, we all make controversial decisions, I just hope most people will agree with me that the napster thing is totally water under the bridge by now and they've clearly shown their endless devotion and appreciation for us in a way that's so genuine, as they've gotten older Metallica have proven time and time and time again how far they will go and how much they will do for their fans, the past is the past in this case. Fucking legends aye, appreciation is a powerful motivator. Rock on
It's so weird listening to this now in 2019. I've had depression for 20 years since the start of high school to the point where this was like my anthem. It's been one of my (if not the one) favorite songs ever. I dunno if it helped or just made me wallow in the depression worse, but I listened to the crap out of it and related so much and had so many feelings associated with it. And now listening to it, after FINALLY getting help and seeing a psychiatrist and treating my mental illnesses, it's weird to hear it again. I still absolutely love the song, but it doesn't resonate in the same way, where I had all the feelings of emptiness, sadness, loneliness, feeling pathetic, and not wanting to exist. Instead, due to the treatment, I no longer hate myself, wish I died, etc, so it doesn't hit me in the same way it used to. I'm not entirely sure if I'm now just seeing it as an amazing song that once meant the world to me, or if I'm seeing it with gratitude that I made it through to the other side, even if it took 20 years and some help from this song for a broken-brained high school kid who felt things would never be anything but terrible. Also, yeah, like many others, shocked by how great they still sound, especially when performing this song.
yah it's weird how this song changes for you over time...Imagine these guys, they wrote it when they were TWENTY-FOUR!....Then three years later they lose Cliff.....and now they are in their mid fifties....I bet it keeps evolving and has a new meaning for them also.
Well as you know the song itself is somone that's suicidal and actually kills themselve it helped alot of people when it was released in glad you seeked out help
Champ I'm hearing ya buddy, I was physically, verbally abused at primary high school in the late 80s 90s metallica got me through some heavy depressed days. Stay strong
This song, it save my life. I can't even begin to explain how much it means to me. I know there are others who've overcome those thoughts with music like this. I am strong now and I want you to know you're not alone 🖤
On 03/28/22, on my birthday, my friend and I listened to this song, and on 03/31/22 he voluntarily passed away. Metallica was the main band for him. I listen to this one song for the third day and cry ...
@@cnvw974 Nothing else matters is a great song, but it isn't as emotional as Fade to Black. And the start of Fade to Black is more melodical than Nothing else matters.
Are you crazy ? That was just noice! SH and BR are classics with a lot of melody and feeling . But yeah you have a rapper on your profile pic. What can you know about this 😁
I am 45 years old and I have been listening to these guys with love since I was 12... I have been trying for years to find the best one among all their songs by listening to them many times. This song has always been either the best or the second for me. It was a great performance.🤘👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
This song, which I heard on a randomly found audio cassette, began my journey into the world of heavy music, which has been going on for 35 years now. Heavy metal forever! With deep respect to all metalheads from Russia.
@Kristine Rose Woman please. Ive been listening to all kinds of music since the late 60s. Dad was a drummer and I got to run with the bands a lot. I ve' liked everything from hard rock to metal to folk and country too so I have a pretty damn good idea about your hair bands (grey hair bands :-) too! I just don't care for Metalica much.
@Kristine Rose It came up in recommended and curiosity got the better of me so I checked it out. I used to like that song til they did it jaz style. BLAAAHHH!
@Kristine Rose Enter Sandman they did as a jazz tune. Don't know why Fade to Black had my comment on it. Sandman was the one I was talking about. Anyway, why the fuck are you so defensive for Metallica? What the fuck do they owe you? You one of those that dreams of going to bed with Hetfield? Oh by the way, fuck you.
at 4:14 he nods his head and the lights turn from yellow to blue, that production is insane and those little things make a huge difference and a whole other level of badassery
What a performance! Kirks absolutely rips the outro solo, Lars even nails the double bass part, James voice is beautiful and Rob is great as he always is
I nearly killed myself but with kirks solo and lars double kick. That’s what kept me ticking just thinking they were on the bones of there arse and now look at them. Never give up
This masterpiece has always perfectly reflected my state of mind. Sometimes I think that maybe it has saved me because knowing that other people feel the same pain as you, makes you feel less alone and desperate. I will always be grateful to Metallica for all the things they have done… for me their music has always bring positive energy making this life more beareable. I like to think about them like the friends I’ve never had. Thank you for all guys, hope see you soon. A big hug to all
@@charlesryan427 When life gets too much sometimes and you come home from work dead beat an ready to give up, this true masterpiece puts it all back into perspective. Darkness to light.
@@GazanfervonderBarut eternal life through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ? Best decision I ever made. Don’t miss the things I use to do at all. It’s really not about happiness, but about truth. He gives peace and joy beyond understanding and I can’t explain it. I challenge you to seek the truth out. I guarantee you the road will led to Christ. The problem is, is that people “are” seeking just happiness. Truth trumps happiness. It will set you free.
@@joshswicegood3253 That sounds absolutely marvelous :) May I ask why you have to give up Metallica to walk that path? I hope I do not offend you. I am simply curious.
@@GazanfervonderBarut no not offended at all. I’m actually glad you asked. It will be hard to explain so please forgive if I don’t make a lot of sense. When I placed my faith in Christ (literally trust) I had a change of heart and mind. I use to listen to a lot of thrash/heavy metal. A lot of anger in the music like pantera. I started feeling convicted like never before as to what I put in my mind. I still listen to some of metallicas music now and then because I like the music. The lyrics sometimes are very anti God like the God who failed implying Christ failed by being crucified. Certain songs I can’t listen to anymore because of the meaning behind them. But songs like one that try to shine light on ptsd can actually have a positive message even though it seems dark. It’s true what the scripture says. When you repent (literally change of mind) you become a new person. That’s the part I can’t explain other than the Holy Spirit coming to make his home in my life. It’s not just music. It’s movies as well. As a born again Christian God placed his peace and joy in my life. It definitely changes you from the inside out. That’s what the gospel does. God saves sinners to which I am.
@@joshswicegood3253 that sounds absolutely beautiful :) I hope I find what my soul needs one day just like you did with yours! thanks a lot for your time.
Are we going to ignore the fact that Kirk is playing a 1959 Les Paul Standard that was previously owned by Fleetwood Mac founder Peter Green, that Kirk payed $2 million dollars for? Hell yeah!!!!!
@@davidvanlalhruaia8491 When I say "No man,..." I mean: I'm not ignoring the fact Kirk plays a two million guitar because its history (Peter Green was a main factor in the story). Do you get it?
I love em all 😍 and yes Kirk is Bad Ass. To pay big dollar for a bad ass guitar and put it into Metallica that's says so much man. Metallica rules they always have and always will. Deep into the Neva 😈 💯 years from now they will play Metallica and I am sooooo fuckin proud that I have been their fan since the start. They are my brothers they are with me foreva😎 they have been through all the little towns and big fuckin city's. My Brothers For Fuckin Ever!!!
Kowxley I’m addicted to watching Metallica lives and I’ve watched a shit ton of full performances through the years. Kirk gets shit on by mustaine fans and that’s mainly it. I’ll pay some songs out for you so that you understand it’s not fuck ups Blackened- Shortened solo. The mid section is different One- the second solo to one he doesn’t tap Fade to black- he improvises the last solo The shortest straw- does extra harmonics That’s mainly it. Sometimes I’ll hear something in his solos and ask myself if that was a fuck up. I’d then just go to other lives and compare and most of the time I find out it’s not. Also sure Kirk has had some negative highlights in his performances. Most of them being some of the easiest parts which makes it look worse. This happens mainly because he’ll just forget whatever he’s supposed to play because it’s so easy so he just doesn’t practice it. He’s changed that in the past 2-3 years. Plenty guitarists have fuck ups during performances, kirk gets extra hate for it which is pretty stupid.
jesus christ, this is the best they've sounded in years, really shows they've put in the hard work lately, wish i could thank them personally for getting better and better and also for giving us these awesome free HD videos to watch, i honestly think that the band is the best example of fine wine, James, thanks for working so hard with your voice, Lars you are so on point here its brilliant, Kirk, we know you always improvise the FTB solo but this was the best improv i have seen in years, Rob, you've always remained flawless so, nothing has changed here :-) really made my day to see this. love to all fellow 'tallicamaniacs
this whole concert is insane. the crowd energy is unreal. youd think they were in there 80s prime here. nope 30 years after the fact and still sound like bliss.
This is one of the most beautiful songs ever made! It gives me strength when I'm sad... Thank you very much Metallica for making my days better (From a teen fan❤)
James sounds better than ever here. When you you get to be our age and still able to just kick ass you gotta give them their props. I wish I could do anything this well at my age. I just watched a couple videos about James and Lars' homes and cars and all I can say is wow. Lamborghini's and 200 million dollars worth of toys. I'd say that have gotten their dues paid. I've yet to see what Kirk has? He deserves at least what the other two have. Rock on crazy bros
Life it seems to fade away Drifting further everyday Getting lost within myself Nothing matters no one else I have lost the will to live Simply nothing more to give There is nothing more for me Need the end to set me free Things not what they used to be Missing one inside of me Deathly loss this can't be real Cannot stand this hell I feel Emptiness is filling me To the point of agony Growing darkness taking dawn I was me but now, he's gone No one but me can save myself, but its too late Now I can't think, think why I should even try Yesterday seems as though it never existed Death greets me warm, now I will just say goodbye Goodbye
When I saw them play in Pasadena, the second this song came on I teared up. It wasn’t a “oh fade to black is playing, I’m emotional”, it was immediate, it was innate. This song means so much to me it’s crazy
The guitar is still getting played on stage by one of the biggest bands in the world. And not just put in storage or a museum. It lives on and has more of a story to tell.
Damn this is better than the studio version. Also Shoutout to Robert Trujillo steady thud thud thudding away just casually making the floor and walls rattle
La mejor interpretación de Fade to Black en la historia sin parangones Perfecta Brutal !!! Sincronía exacta en cada arreglo !!! Me deja estupefacto con semejante perfomance !!!!
this is incredible! it makes you forget all about napster and every album after Re-Load and lets you enjoy them all over again. back when they were awesome and pure and metal.
