I always thought the song is based on the "Harvest of Sorrow" book about Soviet collectivization and the resulting "terror famine" or hladomor. Maybe I'm overthinking it.
2:43 One of the most beautiful Metallica moment here. Two kids who made a band together, Looking each other in the eyes,Headbanging and rocking out in another continent to the biggest crowd in Rock ever. Dreams are made of this.
@@spacejesus4747 I've traveled the world and the seven seas....... I'm never gonna give you up Never gonna let you down Never gonna run around and desert you
Jesus christ sometimes you need to come back to this stuff to realise just how powerful and monstrous they were at this point. No heavy band has come close before or since. This is the pinnacle of heavy
You're right. 'Power' is the word that came to mind as l watched this again for the first time in years. It's amazing. Metallica were the PERFECT band for this exact moment in Russia.
Dude for real I would pay big money just to see them play a whole show just Master of Puppets or justice for all and that goes for a lot of bands out there fortunate enough to see Godsmack Disturbed and korn when they first came out and got to see all the old s*** played live
This song is the prime example that 90% of a song "heaviness" is about the groove. A lot of simple intervals, but all of them are very determined and well executed as well. This guys were the genius of metal in the 80/90s
There were other flags waved too. But not a single Soviet flag. Even though the Soviet Union still technically existed by this point, the Cold War had already well and truly ended.
A most of'em , I mean soldiers, who were not on security charge, so they were mostly "absent without leave" from their platoons - They told us, that better 3-4 days in the military Jail, as to miss Metallica! )) Metallica and AC/DC guys were really surprised that they were so loved in USSR! They had no idea about it! )) And they are still loved by us! :) BTW, I was there on this concert. Twas really GREAT and of cource unforgetable!!! :)
@@sergeidashev2746 damn I wish I was old enough to have lived all these historic events.. . At least I got to see Slayer live before they stopped... Rip slayer
Yeah, I know. I'm so jealous not being able to go to such concerts. I wish I was born in 1968. Now, for me, we would have 1984, with a brand new Metallica's Kill 'Em All vinyl record, destroying my ears to it. And in 6 years, this would happen and I would be 23 so, I could buy tickets to Russia and go there. AC/DC, Metallica, Pantera, E.S.T. and The Black Crowes on stage! Plus, now that we would have 1984, heavy metal would be in fashion, because of New Wave Of British/American Heavy Metal. Plus, we would have real music. A confidence is that we now have New Wave Of Traditional Heavy Metal and we have very good brand new heavy metal bands.
ac/dc played for 1.5 million pantera for 1 million and metallica for 0.5- 1 mio. according to Lars. But still! 1 million! It's like a fifth of the population of my (and Lars') homecountry! Mindblowing
@@chrisps4270 Do you have any evidence those types of drugs were available, widespread enough or even synthesized at the time of this concert? Cocaine perhaps but certainly not what you think you mean when you refer to "bath salts"
Fuck yeah the historical context of this is crazy. Many flags with different meanings and history flying while an American band plays in Soviet Russia right before the Iron Curtain fell
i just wrote something about this!... such a drop is unacceptable, it's not legal.. you cannot have children or families around that drop... it's basically a threat to mankind... doesn't matter how many times you get exposed to it, you just cannot get used to the heaviness of when james screams "COME OOOON!!!!" ... some one call (also) the (american) police !
@Aaron Boone I wasn't born yet. What, are you gonna be a gatekeeper and tell me I can't like it because I wasn't born yet? Sorry I'm getting defensive, but I've had tons of experiences with people like this.
I saw an interview with Lars where he said he missed James's cue after the per-planed pause.(you can see Lars jump up at the beginning of the pause) Lars missed the first symbol strike and caught the second on the way back down to get seated. (if you listen close you can hear it), he severely cut his hand and was concerned that he may not be able to finish the show. You can see at the end of the song he jumps up and quickly exits the stage to seek medical attention. He got bandaged up fast and powered through the rest of the show.
Dafuq is going on in that crowd lol. Also... Jason had the best stage presence of all time. And is the only guy that can wear his own bands t shirt onstage and look cool
The soviet union had just collapsed. This was the first major rock show with western bands in Russia. There were 1.6 million attendees, and the Russian police were trying their damnedest to keep things at bay, but you have a million people come to one place and ask ACDC, Metallica and Pantera to play, things are gonna get rowdy.
The most electric live footage I've ever seen - by Metallica or anyone else. Period. What I wouldn't give to have been there! Can't watch it enough. Long live Metallica.
Yes man Jason newsted is highly underappreciated being shadowed by cliff, but newsted is a machine in his own way , such a beast from flotsam and jetsam , Hail Metallica, Hail the Thrash.
"Oh, people showed up at our show." No matter how big you are, this cannot not give you the thrill of a lifetime, feeling like you're on top of the world. "Look mom, playing guitar paid off"
The Great era of Metallica. I'm glad that I had the opportunity to see them in 1988 James, Jason, Lars, Kirk, Rocked it out like no other's. The strong vocals, pounding of the drums, Kirk tearing up the 6 string, Jason aggressive base.
My life suffocates Planting seeds of hate I've loved, turned to hate Trapped far beyond my fate I give You take This life that I forsake Been cheated of my youth You turned this lie to truth Anger Misery You'll suffer unto me Harvester of sorrow (language of the mad) Harvester of sorrow Pure black looking clear My work is done soon here Try getting back to me Get back which used to be Drink up Shoot in Let the beatings begin Distributor of pain Your loss becomes my gain Anger Misery You'll suffer unto me Harvester of sorrow (language of the mad) Harvester of sorrow All have said their prayers Invade their nightmares To see into my eyes You'll find where murder lies Infanticide Harvester of sorrow (language of the mad) Harvester of sorrow (language of the mad) Terjemahkan ke bahasa Indonesia
the pause before All Have Said Their Prayers and the way the camera is panning acorss James's face as he says Infanticide while the green light shows up on his neck is such a powerful moment! this is the hardest performance of a Metallica song ever. the entire band looks menacing and the sound is punishing and alive. The footage of police beatings perfectly complement the aggression. RIP Metallica 1984-2000 (no other year matters).
So sick, I would have loved to see Metallica in their prime. Plus this was right after the fall of the soviet union pretty crazy. I love how the security is literally just Russian soldiers lol.
I cant believe how hard this still fucks in 2022. There is so much metal I enjoy today from modern bands that have far more moving parts and way more complicated movements but the delivery and execution of this heavy shit right here is timeless. Simple yet THICCCCC. Goddamn what I wouldnt give to see Metallica live when they were at their pinnacle and the most feared band around. I'm nostalgic for an era of rock I wasnt even alive for.
Metallica, thank you for everything, for the free concert in Tushino (Moscow, 1991), for the songs that inspire your fans all over the world. For acutely social songs, for your creativity. You have a huge army of fans in the world, believe me, at least half of them are in Russia))) With all due respect to all other countries and Metallica fans, especially Brazil, Serbia, Bulgaria, Germany and the USA! Russia, Moscow. P.S. Sorry for google)) Metallica,
3:21 used to love Jason Newsted headbanging with his wild hair 2 decades ago and still love it now... This is the beauty of Rock and Metal music The roar the hair the brotherhood in a big crowd god this is pure 🙌🏻🤘🏻
There were nearly a million people out there. Do not miss that. This performance is imposing in front of the most imposing crowd you can possibly imagine
The best live performance of the "Harvester of Sorrow" I've ever seen, This is immortal and incredible! This (along with other stuff) is why Metallica is in the R'nR's Hall of Fame. They are my #1 band for now over 30 years
