This whole album is underrated. Iike many I love Metallica but this album demonstrated just how fucking good and clean they are. And this song, hell ya, one of their best 👍🏻
Demon Rantz Becouse the concert was shot in 4:3. If they make it 16:9 widescreen, it doenst make sense, becouse they will have to cut the upper and down part of the video... That doenst improve it at all in my opinion... But a remaster in Blu-Ray with 5.1 sound would be awesome
This is a masterpiece of song and I love how Metallica was not afraid to mix metal with orchestra, a true musician is not afraid to play whatever they wan, just like Metallica
You should check out Deep Purple's 2001 performance with the London Symphony Orchestra and their 1969 concerto for group and orchestra live album they're both fantastic.
It really is, I wished they would've recorded at least some studio version of it. It's what separates Metallica from most other bands, they combine thrash with classical harmony. I love Slayer....but there's very little harmony in there. Their solos are like a fucking chainsaws. It's ok but, after an hour or so, I need some MELODY, I need HARMONY....my ears are just built that way as a musician. When I first heard that Metallica was doing the "S&M" thing, I didn't know what to think. I was only 17 when it came out...I was a huge Metallica fan, but I was going thru all kinds of phases. I'm very comfortable saying that this project was a HUGE success!!!! "Minus Human" was decent, but "No Leaf Clover" was deserving of an album spot, in my opinion. Sorry for the rant....as a long time fan, people love to hate on this band. It's funny, of all the bands that DON'T deserve everything they have, Metallica ISN'T one of them. They've earned every single penny they have. I've seen them 8 times in around 18 years, and there aren't many bands who put on a better show....there just aren't. The hate Lars gets is understandable, he's not the greatest drummer, neither was Ringo, but he was a Beatle. Lars had NO skill....but he followed his dream, chased it down, then achieved it. Hard to not respect that, he EARNED it. Jealousy is a stinky cologne, huh??? P.S. They have a new album set to drop soon...."soon" is subjective. It should be out by 2017, I work in music out here in Hollywood and I get to taste the goods early. It's gonna be good, man. Cheers, bro. "Cannot Kill The Family."
This song stands alone, I always remember the first time I saw the live performance and thought DAMN since I assumed this to be a studio version already! James vocals were on point here
Afrobe Bryant Your name is great. Well said about it being like DaVinci. I agree. If you couldn't hear the crowd in parts of the song, you'd think it was a studio version. Cheers, Afrobe!!!!!!
As a long time Metallica fan, this is my favorite James vocal track ever. He reaches a level of vulnerability he's never replicated. He's transcended the typical macho, metal bull shit persona. I wish he'd do it again.
I'm pretty sure James was using some enhancement on his vocals at that point, but it still doesn't change that its probably one of my favourite Metallica songs. Fuck it. That whole concert just seemed so amazing. I was only 5 in 98
When I first heard this I thought it was recorded, but the crowd sound was just an addition, but holy f*ck, James really sung this live? This probably one of his top performances... damn this is literally one of the best live performamces EVER
I love Metallica. This is probably in my top 3 songs by them. I love how they started of as a thrash metal band and they have really tried a bunch of other things. Even recently they released an acoustic version of one of their trash tracks. This song still gives me chills. James really is a great vocalist. I think this kind of era was his vocal peak. He's obviously still really great these days too but this was otherworldly how great he sounded. Listen to those notes at the end.
Personally I think James’s vocals have gotten better. You listen to the day that never comes or outlaw torn from S&M 2 and he sounds amazing. You can tell he’s been practicing a lot.
They really are man. In my mind Metallica is on an entirely different level then any other band. Metallica is the only band I know of that has so many 10/10 songs.
Metallica: No Leaf Clover And it feels right this time On this crash course we're in the big time Pay no mind to the distant thunder Beauty fills his head with wonder, boy Says it feels right this time Turn around, found new high lights Good day to be alive sir Good day to be alive, he said Then it comes to be that the soothing light at the end of your tunnel Is just a freight train coming your way Then it comes to be that the soothing light at the end of your tunnel Is just the freight train coming your way Don't it feel right like this All the pieces fall to his wish Suck up for that quick reward boy Suck up for that quick reward they said Then it comes to be that the soothing light at the end of your tunnel Is just a freight train coming your way Then it comes to be that the soothing light at the end of your tunnel Is just the freight train coming your way It's coming your way It's coming your way, here comes Yeah, Then it comes to be that the soothing light at the end of your tunnel Is just a freight train coming your way, yeah Then it comes to be, yeah Then it comes to be, yeah Then it comes to be, yeah Then it comes to be, yeah Then it comes to be, yeah Then it comes to be, yeah Then it comes to be, yeah Then it comes to be, yeah
I always get shivers when I hear this song. One of the best songs I've ever heard. Never get bored of it, although I've had it on my VHS beck in the days, listening to it every day when I was about 20. Now I'm 40 and feel the same about the song.
i remember when i just 9 years old my brother playing his metallica cds and says to me "you will like this band later when you grow up" , it unlocked deep memory core when listening back in 2023 and now im 32.
I'm laying here watching this video in tears. I was 18 when this album was released. This song makes me think back when I had friends, I had plans, I had potential, I had all the time in the world. But I made stupid decisions and ignored the "distant thunder"
When I heard about the S&M album I thought it would suck but man they nailed it. That symphony and conductor should've gotten an award for that performance. Great album and awesome dvd
been a metallica fan for over 10 years, learnt most of their songs on guitar, and thought i listened to all their songs, TODAY is the first time ever that I am listening to No Leaf Clover... im in awe, everything about this song is perfect, its perfection, guitar, drums, bass, the beautiful orchestra, and james' amazing voice... FUCKKK
what I would give to hear that song played live...maybe I'm biased having been in a symphonic orchestra myself but damn, one of the most underrated and incredible songs they've ever produced IMO. And played here live too.. just incredible.
It's so weird that when I watched this for the first time I was 15 and now that I am 38 and to turn 39 this year I realized that I am watching people that are "younger" than me on screen because they were all 36 years old when this was released. It puts me on a different perspective.
I lived 13 miles from work when this first came out. From beginning to end, I covered the 13!! It's a beautiful wicked rush to see 13 miles go by in 5 1/2 minutes 😎
Metallica produced two of those moments in my life when i thought to myself “WOW WTF is that!?” . Once on 1991 when I heard them on the radio for the first time (unforgiven was the song). Another time when I was at a Tower Records and they started to play S&M on the speakers They belong with the sorts of “Bohemian Rapsody” by Queen, and the Beatles.
minha adolescência foi marcada por essa melodia maravilhosa, a voz do James, o Metallica e a orquestra se encaixam perfeitamente. É simplesmente fantástico.
2019 is coming up, time to celebrate the 20th anniversary and do another take at these remarkable pieces of art! Damn, i'd love to hear 'All Nightmare Long' in this setting!
For the people that saying this isn't live. You sound like you have never been to a Metallica live concert nor have you ever seen or heard a live classical show. Combine them two sounds and you'd get exactly what you hear here. To be honest this video doesn't do their sound justice. They are much better live. Always have been.
Cant imagine the goosebump level of people who were actualy there hearing all this beautiful songs with the highest quality sound. Once in a lifetime experience. Im so fucking envy
Hoy 5 julio 2020 escuchando la mejor banda de la historia.......... viva metallica que perdure por siempre..... desde chile pero con el corazón venezolano
I may have already made this comment a while back, but if not: In the chorus, when James does "When it comes to be..." that vocal effect was HIM, NOT an effects box (Ignore the video blur, that was added in post). How do I know this? First, years as a sound engineer for live shows. Second, there is only ONE mic in front of him for vocals. Effects boxes almost always require a second mic, and are a separate mix on both monitor and house boards. In the rare cases of a single mic used for effects, there will be a foot switch by the vocal mic, there is none here. Third, by using the 5.1 mix on the dvd, isolating the center (vocals) channel and listening at ear bleed levels on good headphones, there is NO CHANGE in the background hiss or gain when he sings that part. Even the most expensive effects boxes add a tiny bit of background hiss or other artifacts that can be detected by an experienced ear. So that was all James' voice doing that trick. (I was not an engineer at this concert.) Also, at 4:27 that break in his voice on "Soothing" was an accident that happened during a rehearsal. Jason and Kirk looked at James like "WTF was that?" and ragged him about it, so he kept it in on purpose. He also added a few others on "Comes to be" as well. I think it added a nice touch to the performance actually. Another fun band I worked with was Cheap trick. I did stage monitor mix for them , and during a show on "Surrender" the lead singer got ahead of the band. The drummer was looking at me like "WTF?" as I was in a panic punching up channels in my headphones trying to find out why the entire band's sound was delayed. At that point, he stopped singing, turned to the band with a chuckle and said something like "Well boys, I managed to muck that one up. Let's start again and I promise to stay in time. " They restarted the song, playing even tighter that before, and when they finished the crowd gave them a standing ovation. The singer quieted them down then said, as he walked to stage right (crowd left side if facing the stage) "Tony mate, just wanted everyone to know that was all on me mate, sorry I gave you a scare. " I nodded and gave him a thumbs up and he then embarrassed me by urging the crowd "Give it up for Tony, he's doing a bang on job mixing the monitors for us tonight." My colleague on spotlight lit me up as I turned red and tried to duck behind my board. The band also thanked me personally as they walked offstage at end of the set. Great guys.
great group!!! great song!!!!! all songs are great but this one is amazing... the idea of S&M is perfect!!!!! applause to the person who made all orchestration!!!!!!!!!!!!
possibly the most influential and beloved concert I went to and ranks in affection with seeing the Floyd live before they broke up the first time and the Pumpkins' SIamese Dream tour
