I experienced this video for the first time in 6th grade way back in the 80’s. I grew up and joined the military and eventually joined the army, served in Iraq 2 tours…came home, struggled with mental health however I overcame my issues with therapy and continue my path through the yrs. This song is not triggering for me however it is very stimulating for me as far as looking at life as a whole versus looking at life in stages or in phases according to anything. I look at life as a whole with my past as a learning opportunity for the rest of my life. Life will adhere to whatever environment you allow it to. If you want it to have a ton of support via therapy, woke shit, proper pronouns, etc….then there will life be. If you prefer other things then there in will ther be for you. Take control of your own life through mental persistence…not saying avoid religion….I’m saying go where you have strength that works for you. I appreciate the art….way more than RU-vid allows me to. My life is full because of what this video gave me many yrs ago. And I am thankful

Have you guys read the book this is based on? Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo. It goes into a bit more detail. At one point, he thinks that a rat is chewing on him but he is not sure because he cannot tell the difference between when he dreams and when he is awake. So he does know if the rat is real or not. He can feel vibrations...like a nurse dropping her tray when they first see him. Clearly a new nurse, he surmises. He can also feel the sun on his skin from the window so he does get a sense of time. And later, a nurse writes with her finger on his chest "Merry Christmas." And he is so excited about this because now he has a fixed point in time. The horror of being like that.

Fun fact: One wasn't based off of Johnny Got His Gun. In the book he was hit by an artillery shell but in the song he stepped on a landmine. The song and book were just so similar that Metallica had to buy the rights to Johnny Got His Gun (the movie) so they didn't have to pay royalties.

@@PotatoL001 I'm confused. Why do the show clips from the movie that was later adapted from the book in the music video?
@PotatoL001
@PotatoL001 3 года назад
@@shuckins because they saw the movie and thought it would go great with the song hence why they bought the rights to it. This song doesn’t offer hope. That’s correct. I think that’s ok. This says an act of man (war) has caused this horrific existence. Look what war has created (or more accurately, destroyed). This is 100% an anti-war song at its core. It’s saying flawed man causes senseless war and maims himself without end. Man will always resort to violence and war, and this is an unvarnished consequence of that proclivity.

@TresTrefusis
@TresTrefusis 3 года назад
As a Marine myself I look at it another way. There are things in this world worth protecting, worth dying for, worth being maimed for. This song for me was a sobering reminder that behind all the action movies and video games about it, war is hell and those that dare descend into it's depths for their fellow man are the strongest of all. I speak, not of myself, though I was willing I was not sent to combat during my time in. ...but I knew men and women that were, some just boys and girls. I lived across from the barracks they would stay at when they got out of the hospital and were pending separation. I saw 18-19 year olds with no legs, missing a hand or foot, an eye, totally paralyzed. I made it my mission to go over there every single day, share my smokes and talk to them. To me this song speaks of the horrors of war, yes, but in my mind, it only makes the sacrifices of those who fight that much greater and more apparent. No matter the cost, brave and valiant men and women will always stand for our country. ..and now and in the future as in times past they will prove themselves worthy of the trust we put in them to defend us all. It's true that war is a human created thing, but it's a thing that is sometimes necessary and unavoidable, and at that time, this we'll defend. Semper Fi. o7 "Greater love hath no one than this; that he give up his life for his friend" I hate to disagree with Jesus himself, but I must, in war; the dead are the lucky few, but it is still worth it.

You spoke about how hopeless the song is, but there is hope throughout the song in the chorus. This song had a HUGE impact on me. I suffered depression for more than 20 years and "trapped in myself" was all I was thinking about. Hearing someone singing this was kind of a relief : I wasn't alone. I was on the verge of suicide despite a christian background. When my fiancée and I broke, I was about to suicide, had a bayonet ready, pointed at my heart and God gave me a glimpse of lucidity and I went to mental health hospital, asking for help. The third night there, I screamed to God after crying all the tears of my body :" You let my life be broken, ok; now, YOU lead, I can't no more !" (it was more a scream of defiance than faith). Then I fell asleep. The next day I had the chance to testify of my faith to 3 other patients, one of them is still my friend and converted to Christ. As I write this, about 10 years after, I'm crying tears of joy : my suffering has been a tool for the Lord to bring a lost soul home. I wouldn't exchange this suffering for all the gold of the world because I have been a tool of salvation in the hand of Jesus; He gave me a purpose. God bless you Rob and family !

I've nearly slit my wrists but, could never bring myself to actually cut them. Then, I was dead in a car wreck. God showed me that he had way more for me to do & it wasn't yet my time. I've felt minor sorts of this kind of pain, and it took me until the point that I started sobbing at hearing this song to realize I was truly in distress. I bought the book because of that epiphany, but I never worked up the nerve to actually read it. I'm still healing... I still cry when I hear this at times. As an Afghan veteran the lyrics speak to my soul. Especially the lyrics of landmines have taken my legs...... taken my SOUL! That gets me everytime! PTSD steals so much from you! As a metalhead I love every aspect of this song! A real banger! As a Christian I am comforted by God that HE had been with me through my trial and tribulations and provides comfort in my darkest times. I love this song so much! It truly encompasses the horrors of wars, the fears, the aftermath, the hurt, horror and the beauty of how war war brings out the best and worst of humanity.

When I was in High School I read the book Johnny Got His Gun and would play One on a continuous loop. How I was able to read the book is beyond me, and I got an A on that book report. Rob your silence was jaw dropping, usually you make a comment here and there during the song. I understand how this song effects you. I have a buddy of mine who is a former Marine, we went to Metallica show and when they played one he got upset. Luckily for him he never went to war. But I understand now why it would upset him. He is still a big Metallica Fan! Rock On Pastor Rob🤘

It really stuck with me when you mentioned how someone who’s feeling isolated, even if they don’t actually have a disability, could feel a connection to this song, because that almost perfectly described how I was when I first heard this song. -I was maybe 15 or 16, so already not a great time in anyone’s life. -On top of that, I was (and still am) a mostly introverted person, so I didn’t really have anyone my own age that I felt I could connect with. -I was doing very poorly in school, so things were always very tense when I was at home. -I was prescribed Adderall to help me focus, but one of the big side effects was that it flattened out my emotions, so I couldn’t really feel any kind of true happiness or sadness, just this odd numbness with occasional bits of depression here and there. -Finally, I’d been raised in a mostly non-religious household. At that time I was close to going from agnostic to full on atheism, so I didn’t even have faith to fall back on at that point. So basically, it was probably the loneliest and most desolate point in my life up til then. And then I heard “One” for the first time, and even though it was exactly as disturbing for me as you described it being for you, I kept coming back to it. It certainly didn’t give me any hope, but it was...I guess it was cathartic, in a way.

I remember seeing this movie has a senior in highs school, it is the single most depressing movie I have ever seen. Yet I believe it is so important everyone should see it, or at the very least read the book. It doesn't glorify war or its aftermath, it shows it for the horror it truly is.

I'm going to be honest. I was 9 when this released but later in life it became one of my favorites. Desert Storm happened soon after. I didn't have cable TV so I didn't see any videos until years later. I had never heard of the movie or book on which it was based. I joined the Army in 1999 and deployed in support of OIF in 2005 and 2007. Then, and only then, did the book and movie really resonate. By consequence this song.

I start listening to Metallica when I was 11 to 12 and this was my first song and first album. I never really got what war was about until I became a combat medic and work in medical for 14 years in the army. Now I cried every time I listen to it after everything I saw and lived during my 3 deployments in Iraq. PTSD kicks in and all the memories just rush to my mind. As a born again christian Still crush my heart because of all the pain I saw, but I still listen to this song. Another and I will appreciate if you react to it is disposable heroes from Metallica 3rd album Master of Puppets.

It's good to remind... this song is based on Dalton Trumbo's book Johnny Got His Gun and film is about that. Book is really anti war and Trumbo was accused as communist because of it. You could also see that angle from this song. I really hope you could react to Wintersun - Time live rehearsal at Sonic Pump Studio. Please and peace 🙏🏼😎✌🏼

As a veteran who has seen the scars that war leaves upon people, causing damage and making them want to take their life...thank you for your review. I feel this song needs three different views...record, live and music video. There's just so much extra in the music video between video and audio that adds so much to it, it's a completely different element. You really need to see all three versions of the song to understand it. But, there's also the fourth version, going to war (or knowing people who have gone) to fully get the meaning of the song.

Another great entertaining and insightful video as always. First of all, one of the greatest songs/videos ever objectively speaking. This song really means a lot to me in several ways. It has a lot of weight because of all my family members that have served and come back from Japan, Vietnam, etc. with purple hearts and horrifying memories stuck in their brains. Along with that I of course still have friends and family members serving today. I wrote an essay about this song back in college English which is the only paper I've ever been happy to turn in lol. In high school our youth pastor had all of us do a Sunday morning sermon of our own talking about things that we connected with and since I'm a metal head as well as a music nerd that plays in the church praise band I did a sermon about music and specifically this song and played the intro for it in that sermon and talked about being stuck in a rut and asking God for a way out of said rut. I HATE talking in front of groups of people but again it's different when it's your hobby or something you're genuinely interested in and connected to and I'm glad my youth pastor got me out of my shell and made me do that. Basically what I'm saying is I love this song and couldn't agree more with everything you said about it. A horrific video but yet it tells a great story and instead of pushing you away from it, it pulls you in. Great job guys.

Funny for you to say that "If you're in need of hope, call on Jesus." since, in a way, that's kind of what happens in the movie, Johnny got his gun, that plays in the music video. Johnny hallucinates meeting Jesus (amazing Donald Sutherland) who then tries to give advice on ways to wake yourself from nightmares. I'm going on memory therefore paraphrasing, but: "How about screaming. That always wakes me up from a bad dream." "Oh, yeah! No, wait.. I cannot yell. I can't even whisper." "Well, you can tell yourself that this is a bad dream and force your eyes open." "Oh, I can't open my eyes. I haven't got any." Johnny goes on saying: "I haven't got anything. I'm just a piece of meat that keeps on living." And Jesus replies with a sigh: "Since your real life is a greater nightmare than your dreams, it would be cruel to pretend that anyone could help you." It is a powerful scene, and though it might seem anti-religious, I think its purpose is to really lean on the horror of Johnny life and the anti-war stand that the movie, and the book it's based on, carries.

I'm no social justice warrior, but this is definitely a piece of music that speaks to people with depression and disabilities (I have OCD and have struggled with anxiety and depression). I have a theological education myself, and I know that churches unfortunately do not focus enough on the Lamentations of Jeremiah and the sufferings of Israel in Judges. Our society is permeated by a constant veneration of positivity, excluding those who would bring stories of intense suffering to the worshipers of the upbeat. To have a well-rounded life, we must mourn with those who mourn and rejoice with those who rejoice. Romans 12:15. People with depression and other disabilities have heard the "be positive" and "Look on the bright side" spiel a million times. They do need messages of hope, but more than that, they need those who will not trivialize their pain.

I’m curious to hear your thoughts on the song “Fade To Black” by Metallica. I grew up in a strict Christian home and wasn’t allowed to listen to this music when I was young. This song in particular was brought up a lot by people from my church and other church related events I attended claiming it was supposedly cued up in the tape decks of lots of people who had committed suicide.

Seeing this video at 11 or 12 years old inspired me to want to play drums. 23 years later, drumming is still a major part of my life, who I am as a person, and is my relief from life’s stresses and downfall. I always love hearing stories of how it affected others. Thanks for sharing yours. Obviously, the background content and inspiration for the song is the film “Johnny Got His Gun” about a young man who loses his arms, legs, sight, hearing and will to live from a landmine while away at war. Which is sad, but as and is a reality for many. These scars are not always physical, though, as PTSD and other mental afflictions to this day make this content relevant to our fighting men and women.
