That’s funny cuz I feel the same exact way. There’s a whole handful of other bands that I like significantly more than Metallica, but this song and video are one of my favorites in all of music. It has such a deep meaning and it just sounds so bad ass. And it was quite ground breaking in its time.

Alan Lovejoy that’s what the army and the doctors thought but the point of the story, the tragedy of it was that he could feel external stimuli. The song is based off the movie "Johnny got his gun" and is possibly one of the most depressing movies I have ever seen but really highlights the horrible toll of war and the way that these soldiers and veterans are treated. The official music video for the song even contains clips from the movie and really makes the message in the song hit home, right in the feels. I really like it when people, such as yourself, expand their mind and explore other genres of music, and even admit that you had this bias earlier in life. It's a common misconception that heavy metal lyrics are meaningless, violent and evil. You tend to find that a lot of metal music has some VERY deep lyrics covering a vast array of subjects like war, homlessness, substance abuse, domestic abuse, the state of the environment etc... something that isn't too often covered in more popular styles of music.

Something else about a lot of people who walked past music like this when they were young... this music is intricate. If it's played over FM radio and/or little speakers that are overdriven, it's mush. Fuzz with a changing tone, all the little tiny bits get lost or worse, changed... one of the chugg riffs has a lower octave three instrument harmonic. That bass harmonic, played over a system that's pushing or past it's limit, sounds like the honk you'd get out of a 10' tall goose, or a tremendous fart if the equipment's really bad. (ED: 12:30 to 12:38 is the one prone to 'gronking'). You want a happy song from the band that excels at pointing out the evils of humanity? Well... Hit The Lights and Whiplash are crowd pumpers from the first album, you've got the instrumentals, and some selections from Black, Load, and Reload that aren't deepdamndark. The Master of Puppets and Justice albums are both thematic on malevolent control/string pulling and injustices, respectively... which is a shame because while the subject matter gets super deep, those albums have some of their best thrash and thrash/prog metal.

My man don't forget about picks, tuners, strap, and stand/bag/case. Those add to total costs. Just bought my kid another guitar. Also the guitars with built in tuners are pretty awesome. They are great for learning and not trying to be perfect. You gotta react to "Shake That" - Eminem ft. Nate Dog for a club type song or "One Shot, Two Shot" - D12 for a story telling song.

Nah, he don't need a tuner, strap or case. Today there is plenty of tuner apps on smartphones and computers. For beginner it will be enough. Also it's better to learn how to tune guitar by ear. Strap, stand or case can become handy, but on low budget it's just better to buy better guitar.

rock is known for not straying from dark human emotions and sadness, but there is an unsaid strength behind the songs and thats in the music, u can bob your head and when you can separate yourself from it and remember its art you can enjoy it, like a John wick film, there is intense violence and most of us dont want that to happen to anyone, but its entertainment and you may find yourself realize you have all those emotions at times in your life, not so specifically to the story of a war veteran but simply the lyrics about feeling claustrophobic , and you find strength and excitement and yourself happily going "DARKNESS IMPRISONING ME , ALL THAT I SEE" , thats part of rock, just accepted a heaviness at times but seperating it and making it into something you can step over, go to a metallica show and see these songs arent really downers, but uppers, especially those parts. Its an inverse relationship sometimes, its layered, its not all in the lyrics, its the melody and beat, there have been songs too heavy in theme for me at times but after years and growth you go back and ur like yea, I can love this freely because im set free from those emotions, now I can celebrate the humanity behind the song, the song is a bit sad but also a celebration of strength in that people who have felt that darkness literally or partly relate, they can make it into something beautifully moving, like this song, its about knowing ur sadness isnt a fault, but a binding factor in our existence, thats where you start to listen to rock songs and feel the purpose of it, its not supposed to be easy listening always! IF u want happy rock tho listen to some blink 182, they arent heavy but they are irrelevant on purpose and thats what made em big, they are supposed to be light hearted to provide relief, even tho lyrically they sing some downer ish stuff too. "every time I look for you" "Reckless abandon" have some fun feels and the drums are awesome, especially in reckless abandon, also in the song "rollercoaster" those are more light hearted. Travis barker is an infamous drummer . Not the most profound songs lyrically, but if u want catchy fast paced happy sounds that rival the catchiness of anything on the radio, thats a great band. Atleast for some of their albums, now they kinda suck IMO

If you pay close enough attention this song actually has a really deep progression, both lryically and musically. It starts out soft and dreamy, and slowly transitions into the thrashing drums and guitar, mirroring the person's journey from waking up confused and eventually descending into panic and fear as he realizes what happened to him.

Now you should check out the official music video for this song. The video for this song was Metallica's first music video they ever made. It was also a big departure from pretty much every other music video other musician's had released up to that point. They really made something special with that video. The story the song is based on, Johnny Got His Gun, is about WWI, so the subject may have been drafted, not a volunteer. I am not sure on that point. The movie clips used in the video are from a real movie based on the original book, edited in a bit out of order to work with the emotional arc and message.

Not to be a kill joy Rich but once you get a guitar the first thing you'll realize is its nothing like as easy as it looks, gl though its amazingly satisfying if you put the time in, just set realistic expectations :). Jumping straight in to learning metallica stuff would be a kin to trying to run the 100 meters in under 10 flat at 300+ lbs. Also avoid very cheap acoustics, the action on them tend to be very high making them very difficult to play.

Not exactly true. Some Metallica stuff is criminally simple to play. It's what I cut my teeth on. This song in particular is a good starting point. Half of it is very easy. Granted the other half takes a few years of dedication, but there's very little Metallica that can't be played after a few years. Theyre not a particularly technical band. After 30 years of playing theyre kinda mundane.

Fade to Black is a real deep song. Check that one out man. James Hetfield wrote it when all their gear was stolen in the winter of 83 in Boston I think it was Boston but he was so depressed but got out of his depression of losing all their gear by writing one of the greatest Metal Ballad type song ever.

I love my Martin D 16E and D 18. Martin has the best sound to me. Depending on the materials and it’s quality of manufacturing acoustics are like wine. Alvarez and Fender make really great cheaper end acoustics. My first acoustic was Alvarez

I know how to play many Metallica songs and the intro to "One" is one of the simplest to play.

If you get a guitar from a music shop you have to play Stairway to Heaven before you buy it and leave with it Its a rule Oh and if you want more metal suggestions I'd suggest Iron Maiden - Powerslave (my favorite bass line to play) or Metallica - Damage Inc. (Not necessarily upbeat but its high energy, good workout song)

Btw, the music here, like Master of Puppets, does represent the war situation.. The drums for example (esp the fast snares) sound like machine guns.. The beginning of the solo is like bullets flying all around you, the ending is abrupt just like many of the lives that are involved in wars by choice or otherwise. Heavy metal isn't known for being happy generally, it's filled with anger but not necessarily negativity.. Anger is an emotion that we all go through and sometimes even need! This kind of music is an excellent way to let it all out, or help you cope with such situations without hurting anyone including yourself... It is why in a way, (and I know how this sounds) a very "calming" music. Peace ✌️

Depends what type of music you want to play. A fender might not be great for metal but it depends I would recommend if you want to play some heavier music to at least get 1 humbucker. I personally got a Ibanez gio. It's a superstrat so you have a humbucker and 2 single coils. But maybe the most important thing is the amplifier. The amp might be more expensive than the guitar itself. If you have an electric guitar you can set your amp to clean and it sounds like an acoustic guitar.

I bought my son an epiphone acoustic starter kit and for the money it is a solid value guitar.

Having dipped my toes into the guitar-playing hobby, I assure you that you can play intros and rhythm stuff as you wanna. Given that you learn some basics on how to do it, of course. It's an amazing feeling even if you don't feel like going full fledged. Still rewarding!

Guitarist of 17 years here. Used is absolutley fine, just have a quick look for any obvious damage or cracks around the neck (especially where it meets the body and where it meets the headstock). A test of the electrics if buying an electric doesnt hurt either. Other than that you should be good. Also when it comes to starting out on the instrument. You can look up and learn chords and scales and such, but other than that, just play the thing. As often as you can even if its just 10-15 minutes here and there. That's how you really learn guitar. 9/10 people I've met who say something like this "I wanna learn guitar. I need to go get lessons" never end up learning. They will go to a handful of lessons, maybe learn a chord or to but ultimately fail or quit because they're hinging their success on someone else and these lessons from the get go, instead of realising that no-one can teach you how to play except yourself. Someone can show you chords or what a scale is, or some tips but the only person who can teach you how to actually play is yourself. So I'll loop around on myself and say the best way to go is to just play, a much as you can as often as you can and you'll be jamming out in no time.

Hi Doc. I've watched many react to this song. But never said this till now. At the age of 17, I had to make the decision to have my mom's machines turned off. I'm now 45 and still live with that decision, even though I know it was the right thing to do.

Don't spend a lot on a first guitar, if you don't stick with it, you are not out much... If you do, you can get something better, and you will better know what you want. Epiphone makes pretty good beginner electrics, usually in the $200 range. A dedicated music shop will have used ones that you can be reasonably sure are good to go, and a beginner guitar that was traded in at a shop can be picked up cheap.

Believe me they tried to exchange this for that. The answer is no, they couldn't. The evil side of human nature must be fought by the good side of human nature. In the context of the time period, it may have been what was right for them. So, if you "get it" like you said, then accept it. Accepting the reality doesn't mean your agreeing morally or heartless, simply removing your emotion from the event so you can then see with a clear perspective. we should always be looking to learn from history's lessons. I Love your channel, keep killin em

Only real tip I have for used guitars is make sure to get a good side view. Only major issue I can think of offhand is possible warping of the fret board. If people don't loosen the string in between session the constant tension can cause some bending in the wood and damage sound quality. Other than that You're usually safe as far as I'm aware.

You should listen to 3 Black kids metalhead that can play awesomely! They’re from NYC playing in Times Square rocking out to Metallica heavy metal tunes! You have to listen to “Unlocking The Truth” the metal band they created!!! They’re very young new and still working on it but they’re playing is out of this world!!!

To really get a sense of the music you see the actual music video. Also the movie that they play during the music video is called Johnny got his gun, I saw that movie in the 80’s and is just as depressing
