@@MrVideo123 I agree brother. I watch these videos with my grandkids we have a great time. I raised my kids to love people, music, and the treat everybody with kindness. I love my grandkids watching your videos so they can get an understanding of everybody loving music and having a heart. I know I got deep with you but good job in your reactions bud.
I love how this guy puts his whole heart and body into trying to figure out the song it would be easier just to look up the lyrics but I enjoy watching this guy
@zach w NGL wasn't overly impressed with their last few albums. There were some hints of the old magic on the last 2 (spit out the bone, atlas rise, a couple other tracks too). Nothing of value at all on St. Anger, and the less said about Lulu, the better. Still a great band though, all things considered.
@zach w Fair enough, but I was so heartbroken by St. Anger. I'd gone through High School listening to everything from KEA to ReLoad, and was so hyped for a new album, then it was no better (imo) than the butt rock of the era. Not a single guitar solo? Then there was the drums..... BAM BAM BAM BAM BAM BAM CLANG BAM THUD BAM BAM BAM CLANK CLANK BAM THUD (cat scream) BAM BAM (shattering glass) BAM DINK BAM
This is very true...Like The song Nightfall By The Shore Of Time - Dark Tranquillity ^^ That whole album is great! And also The Gallery album of course ^^ "A shimmer trace of divinity lost in the beckoning midnight vault (We are) lulled within the wake of a cold November's nightfall Nightfall... A communion of life and eternity, of Races scattered in the depths of the universal dark Above us minds went sailing free and blossomed in the vast nocturnal sea Paragon of beauty, Oh, spark of Creation; We march to the rhythm of the Night Starborn flew the Dove of Man in the eventide of life, whose wonders crowned our yesterdays with light Fire - Earth - Water - Wind We lived beneath the waning moon of truth And danced in hunger for the Powermind (of Youth) Like the dark to a dying Flame; Sweepingly embracing its grieving remains Defiantly blazing the black that awaits Counting the days 'til the new Age awaits Times' lustful cyclones arise, Piercing the fairest of Skies In elysian awakening of spiritual glory we see what our history belies Meadows of Asphodel Burning in the hunted dawn Tragedies die among fiery flames as the firewood of Wisdom is sawn Our Guardians were blind My lightbringer ephemeral Within the heart of all; A cold and dusky melancholy night, as ever sullied the fair face of light Whose seeds of life they grind To dust, of vapour is our mind ...evermore Paragon of beauty, Oh, spark of Creation; We march to the rhythm of the Night Nightfall by the shore of time, a tidal wave of fire and woe Swept away with the last of life the core of the enigma as bestowed Our crystal spirits melt to flow the mountainside along To join as one with seas of old in symbiotic songs: "Communion... Within the Oversoul of the Universe" We are but fragment of Eternity, pale shadows of what we'll once be In life's outer regions I will find the foremost Tranquility Chanting the odes of Magonia A soulstream in flight to the Otherworld ...to the Otherworld "
Lost his arms, legs, sight, and hearing. Stuck in the deafening silence of his own mind wondering why he's being kept alive by machines, wishing it would all end..
Man, when he was trying to figure out the story at 4:35 I was like "homie, just have a seat and put your seat belt on. It's much worse than your thinking right now".
I had to cancel my trip to see my daughter who I haven't seen in two years and lost my job all in the same week. Millions of other people are struggling a lot worse than I am. Thank You, for putting a smile on my face through these hard times and hopefully the many people who have seen your videos so far. Good shit man.
Metallica's intros are long, but not by chance. They are designed to set a mood or a tone, to paint a picture that is the root of the song. It's all about how that intro makes you feel.
If nobody else posted this, the song is based off of a movie called "Johnny Got His Gun". The official music video used scenes from the movie to help narrate the song. I recommend watching both!
James wrote this song after watching the movie and After Master Of Puppets metallica had some money lying around so they bought the rights to the movie, metallica owns the move Johnny Get Your Gun
My man. Keep in mind the tempo is attuned to the soldiers mood and anger. In the beginning, the song is more laid back. Later in the song he's more angry about his situation, so the tempo is more aggressive. Just one more reason Metallica is BRILLIANT.
Honestly I'm impressed you figured out the story so fast without watching the official video. Well done. You were absolutely right. This song is inspired by the movie/book called Johnny Got His Gun, about a young man who joins the army, goes to war, gets blown up, losses sight, hearing, etc, and essentially becomes trapped inside his own body with no way of communicating with the doctors and nurses in the hospital. He ends up using Morse code, which he learned in the army, to tell them he wants to die.
Wish we had people that can make music like this today. Cory Taylor of Slipknot/Stone Sour (check out House of Gold & Bones 1 and 2) is one but we need more.
If I had arms I could kill myself. If I had legs I could run away. If I had a voice I could talk and be some kind of company for myself. I could scream for help...but nobody would come for me.
I have probably watched hundreds of first time reactions to songs i've cherished for 15,20,30+ years and so far you're 3/3 for figuring out the meaning of a song. It's one thing to hear someone enjoy the song and not really get what it is trying to tell. It's another thing to watch someone come up to speed with my own understanding of a song after living it for 20 years. Good job man
It's good to see that someone who is reacting to a song takes the time to really think about the lyrics. I even saw two girls reacting on "One" and dancing to the catchy groove. Thank you for making up your mind to the deep lyrics which cover topics like war on an emotional level out of a victim's perspective. You will learn that many Metal bands put a lot of thought and empathy into their lyrics. Keep going on like this - it was a great thing to experience that song again through your eyes. :-)
This is clearly false. We can hear the drums ourselves. He is not doing morse code for anything. Anyone with ears who kbew even vaguely what morse code sounded like would know this was clearly a lie.
Seeing your reaction, acceptance, and third eye opening. It gives me hope that current and future generations. Will not be sold on what the giant music corporations are cramming down the throats of our youth. And claiming it to be art and music. Instead, the hope you are giving me and others. Is that closed mindedness and barriers can still be broken down by musicianship. Creativity is the mother of all inventions. Including mental revolutions.
Bro im 47 years old and saw Metallica live on this tour back in 1988... youre going down a path of music that will open up a new world for you!!! Watch this Metallica one video and youve discovered this without watching the actual video... Yo mad props kiddo
When you watch the official video, it makes this a truly powerful work of art, beyond what most other videos can do to your mind and your soul. It's hit so far out the park that it will always draw in new crowds, no matter how many years pass. Now, tell me how great Justin Beiber is after that....
Thank you for this video. As a grown man, this song still gets me. I honestly still tear up when I hear it. Now I've gotten to see and hear it again through fresh ears and eyes, and it STILL gets me. Watching you work out what the songs about, right up to the realization of what's really happened to this soldier... It feels like the floor drops out from underneath, and the emotion comes up. This is why Metal is such a great genre of music. It's like Angry Fast Blues.
I am SO EFFING PROUD that you were able to take in the lyrics and understand em and piece it together!!! 🙌🏻 like I really wanna jump through the screen a hug you!! 😂🥰 YES BABY you got it!!!
Duuude I am absolutely captivate by how you were able to pick up on the story even before the "landmine" part with just the lyrics. It goes to show how deep the lyrics are but also how much you listen to the story being told, damn great video man.
To me the build up to the guitar solo paints a vivid picture of his situation and despair and then the solo is his inner rage at what has happened to him. It’s incredible.
Dude! The way you went through the lyrics really made me grasp a deeper sense of the meaning. Thank you. It's truly sad that some our military personnel have to undergo the determent of war, but we wouldn't be here without them. 💯🇺🇸
You totally nailed it, and watching it was awesome. The fact that you did the lyrics version helps out versus just watching the video. Now you can just listen again and appreciate the pace, rhythm, and tempo of arguably the greatest heavy metal song ever.
Forced my classroom to watch this video because a kid wore a Metallica shirt and didn't know a song. They learned who METALLICA was that day...3 years later at the gym, that same student came up to me and told me.."Thank you for putting that song and video for me." You're welcome world.
I always loved how Metallica works all kinds of symbolism in their music, even things most people don't outright notice, like the fast paced drum beats resembling machine gun fire.
Johnny Got His Gun was fiction inspired by a gruesome true story about a Canadian soldier from World War I. During battle, a mortar shell hits very close to "Johnny" Joe Bonham, causing severe physical damage. ... During the second half of the story, Joe becomes more optimistic and wills himself to accomplish what he can. It became a movie “ Johnny Get Your Gun” War has plunged Army soldier Joe Bonham (Timothy Bottoms) into an unending nightmare. Hit by an artillery shell in World War I, Joe has suffered injuries that have all but erased his humanity: he's lost his sight, speech, hearing and sense of smell. But he still has the ability to think and remember, which, in the end, may be more a curse than a blessing. Trapped in his body, Joe realizes there's only one way out of his misery: death. Can he get a sympathetic nurse to help him? Hes in a hospital bed...He’s paralyzed, blind, mute..basically trapped inside his body. The book was banned! The movie is all head talk. A must watch! Metallica is fucking genius!
First time watching you, I'm 4:30 in and it's amazing watching you start to piece together the story through the lyrics. I love watching people intelligent enough to piece a song together as the songs going like that. When you learn what songs are really about, music in general becomes such a deeper listening experience.
You should now react to the music video. It has clips from the movie "Johnnie got his gun" that gives a lot more visual for the song. Great that you're getting into rock and metal. As a total left field play...try reacting to Meatloaf "Bat out of Hell" or anything else of his.
Fantastic! 100% correct! The movie they used for the video shows a father who runs a freak show telling his son that any man would give his only son for Country. He doesn't know it, but the armless, legless wonder is his own son!!
Their first 5 albums were by far their greatest works, four horsemen, whiplash, battery, master of puppets, for whom the bell tolls, fade to black, creeping death, welcome home sanitarium, blackened, and justice for all, eye of the beholder. Not to mention their 2 best instrumentals, call of ktulu and orion.
Metal doesn’t get the love that it should, always frowned upon or looked at as evil, I’ll never stop listening!! Do some Pantera if you haven’t man!! 🤘🤘🤘
I’ve watched several reactions to this song over the past several hours and you’ve gotten closest to completely grasping the story within the lyrics. Damn near hit it square on the head. My deep respect man. To fill in the gaps for you, the song is based on a movie - Johnny got a gun. It was, itself, based on a book of similar title which was, itself based on a real life event. In WW1 a US soldier was caught right in the center of an explosion. I’ve heard land mine and I’ve heard mortar shell, which is what the movie seems to portray. The explosion blew off his arms and legs. It’s also pretty well blew or burned his face off as well leaving him blind, deaf, and unable to speak. Surgeons were able, in what was considered a miracle of modern medicine at that time, to save his life. But in his condition he was trapped within his own mind and relatively modern experiments have demonstrated what a person undergoing sensory deprivation (lack of all senses or contact with the world outside our mind) experiences. When the mind has no sensory input for an extended period, it will begin to make up fake input and the person hallucinate...and those can be really horrible. Think like a really bad trip. The disabled soldier was observed to be continually regularly bobbing his head in some kind of a pattern. A visiting officer realized it was Morse code and that the invalid soldier was signaling “SOS. kill me.” Over and over. Because of the medical experiment he represented, the doctors and military command were unwilling to relieve his suffering by pulling the plug and letting him die; but a nurse in his medical ward took pity on him and, when alone with him, cut his airflow. Probably game him an overdose of morphine as well to ease his passing. Hard to think of a much more disturbing thing than this.
This song is my worst nightmare. When I picture him laying there, kept alive by a machine, wanting to die, I always break a little inside. Good reaction!
Man, you got this off the bat. What good is life if you cannot LIVE? I love your reactions, man. Just so honest. More Metallica, More Zeppelin! Halestorm, Pink Floyd...man there is SO much I want you to get to...
I've watched a decent amount of reactions to this song because it's one of my favorites and very rarely do people pick up what this song is about as quickly as you do so props and you've got a new fan!
I've listened to Rock & Metal my whole life, (I'ma 80's baby. 😎) & I love every genre of music except country lol. Nice to see this generation listening to all this Great Music & enjoying it. ✌️
so Dalton Trumbo wrote a book called 'Johnny Got His Gun' in 1938. He then wrote and directed the movie 30 odd years later. Metallica made a song based off of it, bought the rights to that movie, and filmed a music video using clips of the movie. It is an insanely sad anti-war story. You got the interpretation right, 100%. Welcome to metal.
A good friend had a stroke at 36, he was in a coma, on life support when we got called to say our last goodbyes. In icu his teenage daughter and pregnant wife were there among other friends, when they cried and spoke to him, I watched his heart rate monitor near double in speed- all I could think of was this song and ever since that's all I think of when I hear this song. Later that day they turned off his machines. A matter of weeks later, his second daughter was born.
Finally someone who reacts to the non-music video of ONE! ...no distracting movie clips, or audio samples. Just good old pure METAL, without distractions. You didn't pause the solos, and you figured out the lyrics just when you were meant to. An awesome reaction!
My favorite song by Metallica is Dyers Eve because it evokes so much emotion, tells a story, and is relatable, BUT, I’m a massive advocate that, although the world has a general consensus that the greatest song of all time is Bohemian Rhapsody, I think it’s One. It’s got everything. Slow and fast, soft and heavy, energy and relaxation, it’s got everything a music-lover can ask for.
Was their first video on MTV (when they still played music videos) WAY back in Jan. '89. I remember well when it first came out I was immediately drawn in. Have been ever since, although I must admit I've not been much of a fan of their stuff after the Black album, at least until Hardwired dropped which sort of reminds me of their older stuff.
I listen to Metallica since I was a little kid, learned to play guitar with them and other bands and this song was one of my favorites. I don't listen to it anymore right after my first mobilization.
First reaction to this song I've seen with someone NOT using the music video, very refreshing. Good on you sir for understanding the meaning, something the music video gives away. The song is an interpretation of the 1971 movie "Jonny Get Your Gun"
I read the book then watched the movie when I was a teenager, the only thing they changed in the song was that it wasn't a landmine, it was a mortar and he was in a foxhole. Best Reaction I've seen so far, you nailed it, dude. If you want to see the movie "Johnny Got His Gun" (1971). ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uUfBVLAY_pU.html
see you reacting to this song is so fantastic... im very glad you understand that metal is not just "dark" music, or screaming voice, etc etc. you pay atention to the storyline and solo. this is a fucking good day dude
This song is about a soldier who is horrifically mutilated by a landmine and thereafter suffers from what is referred to as "locked inside syndrome". The brain still functions normally, but the body is without vision, hearing, and the ability to speak. On top of it all, no limbs to attempt to communicate in any other way, which as you can imagine makes living... an absolute nightmare.
I absolutely love you reactions. There's a lot of reasons people watch reaction videos. Some people just wanna hear people say they like something they already like. But your reactions are genuine. Keep up the absolutely fantastic reaction videos, man. You're gonna be in RU-vid Rewind one day.
I appreciate someone pulling a story from a song, songs like this are great for it. Honestly, I think u may benefit from doing a little research on metal songs for the future. The video from this song is great for inspiring conversation with friends. U'll find this is true for most metal, a big part was delving into the insert & reading all the lyrics even before listened to the music. Guy, u need to watch the video that goes with this song. Enjoy.
Now that he has heard the song first. When they play the movie over the song in the video, if you dont know the song already, you miss a lot of the music.
This is the most impressed I've been with any reaction. Not just yours, ANY RU-vid reaction. You nailed it without seeing the official video. Everyone else fucks it up.The movie "Johnny got his gun" is what it's inspired by. Much respect.
Love to watch your reaction videos man!! It's a beautiful thing to see someone discover the greats and to piece it all together💞 Grabs me right in the feels every time 🙌
