Normally I'm a negative Nancy but this video put the biggest smile on my face. The idea that Metallica would meet your family, play basketball with you, play Nintendo, and then put on a show for your town is awesome. Truly awesome. In a world before social media, something like this is truly heart warming.

I remember this like it was yesterday. I was jealous af of the winners!

Jason removing his sunglasses to shake hands and look him in the eye was very respectful him being a mega rock star and all.

“House that Jack Built” was my favorite off Load. My mom introduced me to Metallica in the first grade thru the Black Album, Load, and a personal mixtape with One and other songs on it. Later discovered the rest of their albums. Anytime she hears me listening to those albums…. she says “you’re welcome” 😂

Darn, I was rooting for Robert from Indiana- he seemed like a good dude, but this was so cool to see. I also noted that everyone was enjoying the moment rather than watching it through their phone screen. What a cool time in the world. 🤘🎸🤘

I remember calling my college roommate after they announced the winner. My roommate is also from Aberdeen WA, but he didn't know this guy. My roommate recognized where they played basketball and Louie's Pub.

Load was such an underrated masterpiece

It seems your vid’s end too soon sometimes. Follow-ups on the contestants would be very interesting. Robert: Became a sought-after session drummer that occasionally fills in for Mike Mangini of Dream Theater.

Oh what a special time that was for me. I did enter, and answered the questions but I'm SO glad I didn't win. Metallica pulling up to my parents house in Utah would have been quite lame. Hell, I was too young to know how to party!

That contestant number two guy would have been really disappointed when he asked Lars to teach him something on the drums.

that little town of rockers will never forget it. excellent of them to do that. Load and Reload .. were unfortunately the end of my fav era for them.

Why Metallica is getting their flowers now is because they never gave up, never broke up, never folded, and stayed mentally sane through the worst things possible. Metallica are street survivors.

This seemed nice all the way around. Looks like people had a good time and the band was really cool. It did seem that the winner had the big campaign on being on his roof and wearing the pink bathrobe. If it wasn't a set up I figure they went with him because he would be up for anything.

I remember this well. I also remember the MTV contest for White Zombie. People sent in music videos of their bands, the winner got to tour with WZ. I can’t find this footage anywhere.

I watched the premeir of this on MTV. I was envious of that guy, he had all his buddies at his house, and James/Kirk/Lars/Jason played live inside the house, and later at the gig. If Metallica showed up at my door today I'd probably pass out.

Sucks for those in Alaska & Hawaii and those too old or too young) Other MTV contests I can recall that would make good video suggestions (and I'm sure you've gotten them) would be. 1987: A contest involving the Beastie Boys called "Invasion of the Bodysnatchers" where the winner got an extra role for 'Revenge of the Nerds II: Nerds in Paradise 1991: A contest called "Evict Axl" where someone got Axl Rose's old LA Condo.

FUN FACT #4 A full on street fight happened between Kirk and a local man from Aberdeen when he came up to Kirk with a homemade shirt with the words 'NIRVANA RULES AND METALLICA DROOLS' and called Kirk 'Kurt' asked him to sign it. Kirk got mad and punched the guy so hard in the face that the punch broke 2 bones in Kirk's hand so later when it was time for METALLICA to perform for the locals that Kirk couldn't play and had to use backing tracks. 🪰

In all true honesty if those 90s rap videos weren't so bad, Lame and repetitive MTV would have played music videos more often and stopped much later. Yes I factor in the corporate takeover, Napster and youtube. Every single video was the close-up of the rapper from the ground zoomed up. No story no live concert footage. Look it up I remember well enough

Fun Fact: The guy from Aberdeen use to hang with Kurt Cobain. He told the representatives from MTV that he and Kurt were buds and the reps from MTV rigged the contest so they could go to Aberdeen and hopefully get some info and insight into Kurt and what it was like living there with his friends. 🪰

FUN FACT #2 The members of METALLICA received 2 million dollars each to participate in the contest. Lars only got $500,000. 🪰
