They played much faster with Dave than without Dave… personally feel like they just wanted an excuse to kick Dave out after he f**ked up with his drug problem. I believe that Lars mentions how Dave was more focused on speed rather than anything else… and the mechanix demo is faster than Kill em alls four horsemen. Lars was generally an arse as a teen/ young adult but honestly, Megadeth & Metallica wouldn’t have happened if not for Lars’ attitude….. and LULU🔥🔥🔥
Who in their right mind would kick out a player like Dave? No, he was just being an asshole, got a second chance, blew it again, got kicked out, and thats that.
I'm sorry but... the guitar solo in this original version with Dave is just a mishmosh of notes. I don't really care for it at all. Dave might be a "technically" better lead guitar player than Kirk, but I prefer Kirk's style by far. Even if Metallica had given Dave that "second chance" he always wishes he had... they just would have ended up kicking him out later. There's a reason why Megadeth has had like 30 members over the years. Dave has a bigger ego than all of them. The interesting thing to think about though... is that it would have changed their whole timeline. Cliff might still be alive if they had kept Dave around, even if it only meant kicking him out a few months later.
Different players.. Dave was meant to have his own band. There's just too much tension in a band with as many visionaries as Dave, James, Cliff and Lars. His solos on songs James and Lars wrote, like Seek n Destroy and Hit The Lights, don't land as hard as his solos on his own songs, like Jump in the Fire and Mechanix. Kirk's solos weren't always as complex as Dave's, but they followed the flow of the songs more consistently. It's really interesting to wonder what could've been had Dave never been kicked out... no Kirk means no Master of Puppets, meaning Cliff would've never died on that tour.. but with no Master of Puppets, would Metallica have left as big of a legacy? Maybe I'm smoking too much, but it's fun to think about.
