James Hetfield is one of the greatest rock/metal frontmen of all time, my opinion. His playing is always consistent, he writes many of the songs. Oh yup you just said it, haha yes since he's found healing and gone through rehab, he's found a new stride of energy and passion for life, & it shows in his playing and songwriting

not how it works man, they were great in the 80-'s early 90's, lost it on st. anger, tried to recorrect with magnetic and now this, it just sounds like metallica trying to be metallica, but not something their actually making as metallica……. a metallica cover band would probably make a better album, this one just fell flat overall for me, I liked about 3 songs this being one of them and even then its not up to par with what id like them being. idk the 80's were a fluke, I think cliff burton was the secret song writing mojo they've been missing since then

I think I understand something now about Lars, and it may explain why George likes him so much. Frankly I'm in George's camp; I love Lars, always have. I've been listening to Metallica since 1984, 5 years old, my older brother was blasting their first 3 albums on repeat in his bedroom and I fell in love. There are better drummers than Lars, technically speaking. There are certainly faster drummers than Lars too. But few drummers play as HARD as Lars. There's an emotion and an aggression behind every drumbeat, and even though he's drumming at half the speed of some other metal drummers, he's putting just as much of himself... maybe more... behind each swing of the drumstick.
@DavidDavidsonful
@DavidDavidsonful 5 лет назад
People hate Lars because of the way he plays live, he skips entire parts of songs, has very inconsistent fills and double bass and he always fucks up the tempo, even when it starts well it degrades so hard over time that on all songs past the 70% mark he's Always massively off and he also comes off as a massive douchebag. I Don't remember who said it but in Metallica James assumes the duty of keeping the band in tempo through his rhythm playing because of how bad Lars is.
@Joshua-fc7ri
@Joshua-fc7ri 5 лет назад
I can agree with that. Although Lars isn't my favorite drummer or technically up with the drumming greats, he's effective. He gets it done. You can't fake the emotion you felt when you heard master of puppets for the first time. Lars has been there for all of it. He may not be the greatest drummer of all time but certainly one of the great musicians. I have nothing but respect for him.
@WastelandBowman
@WastelandBowman 5 лет назад
Lars is a good drummer and a great Metallica drummer.
@andyb1653
@andyb1653 5 лет назад
People criticize Lars' drumming for being "simple". And I can see their point. It kinda is. I just don't think that makes him a bad drummer in any way. You know what else is "simple" compared to it's competitors? The AK-47. Compared to many more sophisticated rifles, it's a dinosaur. It's also super-reliable and extremely effective, nonetheless. Lars is the AK-47 of metal drummers.

This is a favorite for most fans regardless of what some of the more stubborn fans may say. James (of Metallica) notes that Lars intended this song to be somewhat of a journey with many twists and turns along the way, so seeing you react to that was pretty cool. It's clear that Metallica knows how to write great songs and hearing it from a couple of guys who aren't metal heads does the community a great deal of good, so thanks mayn! I think it's cool to hear from someone who understands music but who isn't a metalhead complimenting Lars. He doesn't have the insane standards of drumming that metalheads do and I don't think he cares if a drummer goes on a crazy tangent. He understands that the drumming works perfectly within the context of the song. That's what is great about Lars. He isn't flashy but he's as fundamentally sound as they come.

People need to realize they’re never going to sound like Master of Puppets again, why would they? Humans evolve and with that, so does music. I would argue, as I have since 1998, that you could make one REALLY amazing album from the material on Load/Reload.... King Nothing, Fuel, Ain't My Bitch, Hero Of The Day, Bleeding Me, Fixxxer, Attitude, Outlaw Torn, The House That Jack Built, Until It Sleeps, 2x4, Wasting My Hate, Better Than You, Prince Charming. ....but no, there is no defending St Anger.

destrus1976 Yeah Load and Reload aren't as bad as people say. But St. Anger is just shit. The quality is ass and the songs aren't good at all.
@destrus1976
@destrus1976 6 лет назад
Brandon, agreed. There are only 3 'decent' songs on St Anger. I would say that Some Kind Of Monster, The Unnamed Feeling, and Frantic are all decent songs....not great....but decent. That being said, I think after 2002 or 2003, I have only listened to St Anger a handful of times. Like once every 2 or 3 years just to see if it has aged any better.... But the production quality is non-existent. It sounds like they recorded it in a bathroom. Lars sounds like he is playing on trash can lids instead of drums. The bass tone is gone completely. There are no solos....and James' vocals are terrible and the lyrical quality is also garbage. it's just ass. Total ass.

You guys really need to listen to some Faith No More. These guys were huge influences to so many of the bands that spawned at the end of the 90's and early 2000's. Epic is probably their most well known song but to me, The Real Thing is one of their best songs. To be honest, even the Loads were still heavy metal. It wasn't just rock. It was heavy, and still used the palm-muted riffs, the "Heavy Metal" sound that Sabbath first established. It was obviously more inspired by a lot of the 70s rock and metal they grew up with, it certainly wasn't thrash, but it was still some great music. As for thrash, I personally think that Death Magnetic had some really great thrash songs. Songs like That Was Just Your Life, Broken, Beat & Scarred, All Nightmare Long, The Judas Kiss, and My Apocalypse especially. The entire album overall really reminded me of Justice, as far as the long, complex riff-o-rama type songs, etc. It's my opinion, obviously, but held up side by side, while I like Hardwired, I think Death Magnetic was an overall better album (with the sole exception being that "wall of sound" final mix, which wasn't their doing, the original master on Guitar Hero III sounded amazing though).

09:52 George and Ryan: I agree with you - Metallica found a healthy mix of oldschool and modern styles on this one. Metallica’s ‘08 and ‘16 album releases were a return to form. Salute. The fan backlash largely came from the period of albums released between ‘96 and ‘03, for your reference. And it’s not hate - a good 70% of the criticism is legit, most in the community would say. At a minimum. Wanna hear a Metallica song that won’t have you groovin? Look no further than St. Anger. That would be a good challenge...🤔
