James' voice is pure twank now. He'd be awesome as a country singer but it's terrible for metal now. I honestly think it's why they've neutered their guitar tone.
This song has a very deep message and killing melody which is something rare especially in nowadays music. Definitely one of Metallica's best songs and personally my favorite.
He's singing better than in the studio tbh. Well, when he was young that is, now he can't reach the studio version level, but he's still an old beast!! :D

@@roamerw-pw5kv in 80’s and 90’ most of the recordings have higher quality then new albums. Just listen to the first 5 albums, or any other band at that time, studio albums were awesome. Mine favorite example is RATM album, instruments sound unbelievable, mastering, mix, perfection. it was recording better than most music nowadays with clipping, less dynamics, etc…
The solo can hear some slight pitch issues but he's standing up, walking around and plus it's a bit dark, so that might be why. Also, the equipment is not in a studio. This is amazing for live, nonetheless. I'd not say "perfect" but very good for the circumstances. :)
Evan San, nah 1999 was better. James got ill and missed some shows in 2000 and Jason also left the band, so I don't think 2000 was that good for them. I'm sure they did some really great shows, but still...
Man. I wish I could go back and see these guys in the early 90's. That was their peak. They still used Gibson and Fender Guitars. Had way better tone. They still played in E tuning. James' voice was at it's peak. Jason was there to add vocal harmonies. I think that's the biggest thing they lost when Jason left: he could sing. Kirk and Rob can't sing at all, sorry guys. Don't get me wrong, I'll always love Metallica and will always see them when I can, but this was their prime, and I'd give an arm and a leg to see go back and see 'em like this.
Well, all I've got to go by are the live recordings, but have a listen to "Live Sh*t, Binge & Purge" and then listen to the same song performed on "Through the Never"... Jason's harmonies sound better than Rob's and/or Kirk's in my opinion.
I like that it isn't over the top like a lot of Metallica songs. How Kirk Hammet isn't considered one of the best guitarists of all time is beyond me. Maybe not the top 10 but easily in the top 20
Funnily enough he came up with this solo on the fly. He played it in the studio and that was the version they put on the record. Well at least that's the story they have told.
Mad respect for Jason's headbanging. He's always on time. Cliff was always screwing up the tempo bangin at a quarter speed. I'm sure James looked at him a few times thinking..."what the fuck is he bangin too?" RIP Cliff
Johan N the solo is actually perfect. Not too much to where it’s overwhelming. It’s just a simple pentatonic solo that goes really well with the pace of the song.
Whoever the sound engineers were for this, need to get hired again. Metallica's sound sounds so hollowed out now. It doesn't have depth, or umph. It's all treble.
At times Jason can make it sound like there are angels falling from the sky when he harmonizes to James' voice. Then next song he brutally growls to match James' grit. Man they were a great vocal duo!
Metallica will never be forgotten. There music will still be played a hundred years from now. Ive been listening to them since I was 4. Im 21 now and will listen to them till the day I die
Metallica made 11 great albums. over the past 30 years all theyve shown is immense diversity, no selling out, no going soft. in my oppinion most songs from load are heavier than anyhting off of kill em' all because the songs from load and reload have passion and emotion. bleeding me is one of the most powerful and emotionally stirrin songs I have ever heard and it moves me in a way like nothing else can.
This intricate melody played by this guitar, is the most beautiful and satisfying music on this planet and beyond. A perception of pleasant notes beautifully played by the Great Metallica
GREAT call! The haunting intro, to the passiob in the playing, to the goosebump harmonies with Jason at the end - by far, the BEST live performance of Unforgiven!
You can just feel the electricity in this song, whether watching this from then, listening to it now, or watching it 10 to 100 years from now. This will always be amazing.
The early 90s were probably metallicas greatest performances, james had a great voice! My opinion.. they played their past songs better in the early 90s than 80s
Some fans criticized Metallica for “selling out” in the Black album, but you can’t listen to a song like that or Nothing Else Matters and not be blown away by their amazing songwriting ability as a band. The black album showed they had range as a band and weren’t one trick ponies. That’s precisely what separates them from all the rest.
Metallica took it to another level in 1990-91, I mean justice was great, but the Black album had more discipline and tight songs with structure. The timing was all there, Metallica and Bob Rock. What a record and what a song!
Termo VOLTAGE It's called progression of your musical career, bettering yourself and utilizing technology and the know-how of others to better your performance. Plus, Metallica took their sweet ass time making that record, meaning they did what they wanted.They didn't have to just make a record and get it out as quick as possible to make the record company happy.

Jason shines here. This is why James never fired him. But Jason never was good enough for this band. Everyone knew it, but James's kindness prevented Jason's departure. Ultimately James was kind enough to let Jason pretend to leave on his own disgruntled Accord.
Don't know why I'm commenting? Oh yeah i am an original Black Sabbath fan and when i first heard Metallica in the nineties i thought yeah, similar to Black Sabbath but they have their own unique sound and knew i finally had found another master to listen to! Don't touch blotting paper! Peace.
All time favorite...nothing beats this!!! simply because the sound of guitar never ever brought vibes better than this...master piece..performed to the core!! When ever I am in low..just watch this...most of the time...if not get over..but some relief for sure!!
kousgo They are all 52 or 53. Cliff and Jason where the oldes 2 guys in the band. I'm just saying thier new sound is...bleh. At least they can use the old pickups and shit. James has this contract with ESP they developed these passive/active pickups. It' sounds muffled to me.
0mik3mik3 James' voice was argueably at it's best here. It's just not a fair comparison. You know James' mom was an opera singer. It ain't no joke he had big time skills and natural talent. Personally I think James' voice was epic in 86'. Yeah I agree the great tone is not there anymore plain and simple. I think they try to tune it down so James doesn't sound so bad.
This IS the best "unforgiven" performance...from the EPIC acoustic "thingy" intro (as James has called it) to the haunting background vocals of Newsted...this is a haunting and powerful performance!

Just an absolutely amazing version of this song. I have listen to this version so many times. It is by far the best live performance of this song. Hell, that whole 92 San Diego show arguably is the best show they have played. 26 years later still fuckin rockin
Probably the 200 speed, thrash, and death metal freaks still alive from the 80's. The ones who say the only Metallica is early Metallica and shit like that. This is a great tune plain and simple. This version is surprisingly heavy too.
I'm so absolutely in love with this band!!!!! Their music is truly timeless!!!! Imagine being at their very 1st show, before they where famous and everyone knew them, being able to say you saw them 1st!!!
