My understanding of 'The Unforgiven' is that it is a deeply personal song about James' relationship with his parents. In most of the interviews I have read he describes having a very conflicted childhood with parents who were Christian Scientists. His father was an extreme authoritarian who used beatings as discipline (until just before James got big enough that he might fight back, as written about in their song 'The Day That Never Comes') and his Mother died needlessly of cancer after refusing medical treatment when James was 11/12 years old. (This was written about in 'The God That Failed'). So in the lyrics the child/young man/ old man is James. The control/ manipulation/coercion/ domination is his parents trying to forcefully indoctrinated him in their beliefs and restrict his experience of the outside world. In the song James very clearly dubs his parents as 'The Unforgiven'. In 'The Unforgiven parts 2 and 3' he continues this journey at different stages in his life perhaps finding a degree of peace in the end as we are all basically Unforgiven in the end as none of us are perfect. I personally believe the body of songs James has written that have a more personal lyrical content like these and 'Mama Said' are incredibly brave and powerful. I also would include songs like 'Holier Than Thou' and even 'Enter Sandman' (Possibly revealing how fear was used to encourage nightly prayers in a young child - say your prayers or God won't protect you from the beasts under your bed!) There are probably many more deeply personal lyrics but I have given enough examples - no one needs a full discography! Hope this has been illuminating!💡💡💡

the meaning of this song is not far from your theory, it’s essentially about a child being brought into this world and immediately being judged and forced to assimilate to be like everyone else for his whole life never being able to be himself
@TheMillzDillz

It is about that, but James has said it is about his parents faith in religion, and the "they" is the pastor and flock of the church.

It’s less about raising a child to be civil and more about how a child can be abused either physically or emotionally into submission to the point where they’re controlled in every way that once they become a free adult they carry the weight of expectation and trauma with them forever living a hollow life framed by the abuse and control the parents and others had affecting their every thought and action Speaking from experience

A lot of Hetfield's lyrics are metaphoric and aren't usually about one specific thing or event. He takes grand ideas like addiction, manipulation, duality and writes around the subject. You can usually interpret your own meaning. He actually writes the melody to the vocals before he writes the words, and fits words into the melody. It's one of the things that makes him so great.

This song always resonated with me, and I always understood it as relaying a bit of caution against being too strict with your children as well. Discipline is fine, but not to the point of completely restricting their growth of "self", forcing them to hide who they are behind masks. "What ive felt, what Ive known, never shined thru what Ive shown" meaning he could never break thru the mask he was forced to hide behind. And I always understood the "unforgiven" to be the too strict parents and family that made him that way as well as himself for never being able to break the chains formed by his upbringing. But that was just my own interpretation. You cant be too strict with your kids if you want them to develop personal morals, likes, dislikes, and autonomy. You got to give them some leeway to develop those. Just because you give a kid a bit of freedom to be themselves doesn't mean they will become savages. The key is figuring out the balance between the two.

The "whipping boy" actually was a loose title for a substitute child that took on the physical punishment of royal children. For it was against the law (or etiquette ) to strike royalty. So a whipping boy takes on consequences that were never his to accept in the first place.
@kyriss12

It's kinda interesting how this song has so many different interpretations that can easily fit the narrative, yet seem to say more about the person listening than the writers intention. Personally I always took it as starting life full of youthful optimism, then the world just beats the living fuck outta you. The child is born as clean slate that simply wants love and affection, so they eagerly try to please everyone around them only to be taken advantage of. The boy realizes that while the world may be a brutal place, maybe if he tries hard enough he can change it, or at least earn some recognition from the people he does right by. The young man keep plugging along continuing to fight the good fight more outta stubborn defiance than any idealistic hope of actually making a difference. And the old man is all outta fucks, and just wants to be left alone.

I don't think he is talking about some cute suburb life here, where the kid doesn't wanna eat his peas. I think it's way deeper than that. How a person could be raised in a super toxic and abusive place or forced to believe and/or behave a certain way because of the parents, the family, the society. I mean... there's a lot of interpretations you could give and there's a lot of examples you can find in society.

I consider this song to be the same as Pink Floyd's Another Brick in the Wall. They are talking about a person being forced to conform to society. Never having the chance to express his individuality. This song is much deeper than just surface conformity. It's how we are all drained or our excitement, creativity and uniqueness. The entire album is a masterpiece.

that is so true, I lost my leg in 2019, the biggest regret and unforgivable aspect of my life is not doing everything I wanted to do while I still could, now I am limited as to what I can do in life and the things I wanted to do are unattainable, it eats away at me every day....so do not take a single moment for granted, do all you can to take advantage of life before it is to late!

Not sure how you settled on an interpretation of just socializing a child in the standard way. It's pretty obvious to me that the song is about a person being robbed of what makes them "them." They dedicate their lives to running "all" of his. He tries to please them all. A person saddled with unreasonable expectations. Never free, never me. This is a lot deeper than just being taught to function in a society. This is about being abused and exploited where this man's desires aren't even of tertiary importance.

If you love guitar solos I recommend you listen to BB King and Gary Moore performing „the thrill is gone“. At one point they start talking to each other through their guitars and it’s absolutely amazing. Or the final Battle of the movie „crossroads“.

The visuals of the official video for this song would provide some very important context to the lyrics. You are missing a lot. Enough to make you cry.

Outlaw Torn and anything from S&M. I was not prepared for how much I enjoyed watching the season ticket holder for the San Fran Orchestra mix with the Metallica lifers and become converts.

My understanding of The Unforgiven is that the society doesn't want different people, it just wants mindless drones that are well behaved and do their job and don't stray from the path layed to them . They place you in a box, and when you realize you don't want to be in that box you can no longer escape it(as the escape path is to small for him)

His parents were Scientologists and he struggled with it in his early years. His parents kept him down till his dad left. It is about his early childhood struggles.

I highly recommend listening to all three songs of this trilogy. Amazing story told. Each has its own meaning, but together it's special. Also, this song got me an "A" in my sophomore English class, so I can't listen to any hate on it.

You should do Minus human or No leaf clover! Both are with an orchestra.

This version's carrying some of the style of the S&M2 concert with it, it's a little different from the studio version and a little divorced from the original emotional drive it had. The events that inspired the song happened probably 50 years ago, so some distance is natural. Metallica is... a very oddly open book, emotionally. Hardship to tumult, to reckoning and redemption, it's all out there.

This song is about James' childhood. He was raised in a strict Christian house that did not believe in science. They didn't go to the doctor's even when his mother became deathly ill. He was forced to live their way, and was not allowed any sense of self or identity that didn't align with their rules. Read the words again. This is not raising a child. This is abuse. "Never free, never ME, so I dub thee 'Unforgiven'" refers to his family/parents...

Wiping boy is in reference to prince's of midevil Europe,(full disclosure perhaps everywhere at the time idk) the prince can not be wiped for doing wrong, so every prince had a wiping boy. Of course there were also wiping girls. Yes that shit actually happened.

My take on the song has always been very literal to the lyrics about the sad and tragic life of a whipping boy

if you are interested enough, there are actually three parts to this song, written over 20+ years on three different albums. musically, i like unforgiven III the best. also, mrlboyd, check out megadeth if you havent yet. i recommend "rust in peace" and "a tu la monde"

becoming the unforgiven and becoming resentful,giving in to becoming what someone else wants you to be but you become who you can't forgive so you can't really empower yourself to change it and you can't hardly recognise who you are from who they are to change it.

You should listen to the studio version from the album. Hetfield can be hit and miss with his voice as his damaged it while recording that album while singing a cover "So What?". The Studio version is Hetfield at his best on this song.

You should look up Arch Enemy Revolution Begins, its a brutal song but very empowering. You may want to pull up the lyrics on that one as well. I think you will feel a bit differently after listening to it.
